Several firefighters rushed to the 800 block of Emerson Drive for a house fire just before 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. Officials say it was an accidental fire that caused $50,000 in damage. Everyone who was inside was able to get out safely. The two people who live at the house are getting help from The Red Cross. WREX-TV NBC 13 ROCKFORD PHOTO: The DeKalb Fire Department is experiencing its very own baby boom. In a recent news release, eight DeKalb firefighters celebrated their newborns who were born within months of each other by taking a photo together. DeKalb firefighter Jared Thorp – one of the fathers – said it was the newborns' "debut" at the fire station. He said the idea behind taking the group picture – which also was shared on the department's Facebook page – was simple: They wanted to turn heads. "We did a picture together because we thought it would be cool," Thorp said. "Obviously, having seven to eight kids in a short amount of time isn't really a really popular thing. But with everything going on, we thought it would be cool to have some cool news for a change and get together [and] have that picture." DEKALB DAILY CHRONICLE The Bloomington Township Fire Department recently purchased a new firetruck, and decided to welcome it to the fleet with the community's help. The five-man truck holds over 1,000 tons of water. It's a replacement for a truck they got over 25 years ago. Along with giving visitors a peek at the new vehicle, the fire department hosted an open house for the community to come and see the station. Along with food and activities, firefighters asked the community to help them with the tradition of pushing the newest engine into the building. "This gives us an opportunity to show off our equipment and let them see that we are taking care of their tax money," Chief Tom Willan said. The truck costs over $500,000. WEEK-TV NBC/ABC/CW+ 25 PEORIA According to the Winnebago County Coroner's Office, Al Bawinkel has died as a result of injuries received when his house exploded on September 13. According to the press release, Bawinkel died at a local hospital Friday afternoon as a result of thermal injuries sustained in the blast. Al Bawinkel's wife, Bonnie, died two days earlier in the hospital due to similar injuries sustained from the same explosion. The Stephenson County Sheriff's Department and The Illinois State Fire Marshal are still investigating the incident at this time. The cause of the explosion has not yet been identified. WREX-TV NBC 13 ROCKFORD South Elgin, Illinois, residents have the chance to get their pizzas delivered by fire trucks. Imagine a child's delight as a fire truck pulls up to their house to deliver a pizza! It could happen in west suburban South Elgin Monday (October 3) evening as the local Domino's franchise partners with the South Elgin Fire District to mark National Fire Prevention Month. Franchise owner Reece Arroyave talked with WGN's Steve Alexander about the annual effort to help make community homes safer. Random pizza orderers will be selected to receive the special delivery, and firefighters will check smoke detectors in the homes. If the smoke alarms in the home are working, the pizza is free. If the smoke alarms are not working, the firefighters will install fully functioning alarms or replace the batteries. WGN-AM 720 CHICAGO |

Firefighters from multiple departments worked overnight to knock down a massive fire at a well-known greenhouse in Maple Grove. Fire crews were called out around 3:30 a.m. for the blaze at Lynde's Greenhouse and Nursery off 93rd Avenue North, east of Elm Creek Boulevard. As they arrived, firefighters saw large flames and a large pillar of smoke billowing out of the greenhouse, according to the department's Twitter feed. Video from the scene shows firefighters attacking the flames from multiple angles, with hoses pouring water in from the side and above. The size of the fire was so large that firefighters say they had to call in a second alarm to bring more crews on scene and a life safety unit from Golden Valley, which helps monitor the health of firefighters. KMSP-TV FOX 9 MINNEAPOLIS VIDEO: Many St. Augustine first responders are back home with their families after a very busy week. The St. Augustine Fire Chief says they had 26 rescues during Hurricane Ian. One St. Augustine firefighter, Hardus Oberholzer, was part of many of those dangerous missions. He says the department has a saying: "The more risk, the more you save." He said he was a part of so many rescues, he really didn't have a specific count – but at least 10 to 15. "I knew they were just kind of racking up," said Oberholzer. "They were almost on a waiting list. We finished one, we dropped them off, turned around, and went off." The calls picked up during the Thursday high tide as water pushed up driveways and into homes. "They were all kind of the same," said Oberholzer. FIRST COAST NEWS October is Fire Prevention Month and the man behind Ingram's ‘Fire Department Chronicles" is sharing tips to keep your family safe as we head into the fall and winter months. Firefighter and paramedic Jason Patton joined Action News 5's Andrew Douglas at the digital desk to talk how being fire safe can support first responders. He also talked about National First Responder Day coming up on October 28 and the challenges first responders face today. WMC-TV NBC 5 MEMPHIS PHOTOS: Firefighters in Newtown Square staged their own sequel to the movie "National Treasure" recently as they retrieved and opened a decades-old time capsule that had resided in the cornerstone of their old station for over 45 years and contained many items from 1916. In 1965, the company's original fire station on Newtown Street Road was knocked down and from that wreckage firefighters retrieved a time capsule that was placed there in 1916. That box was placed into a new box, new items were added and everything put into the cornerstone of the new building in 1967. Firefighter Preston Tyrrell, who organized the opening of the capsule, said when he asked old-timers about the time capsule's name, Gilroy Roberts, it always came up as having contributed an important item to the capsule. DAILY TIMES - METERED SITE The Memphis Fire Department chief is calling for action after two firefighters were struck and injured by a driver Sunday morning on I-240 & Kerr Avenue. Memphis Fire Chief Gina Sweat said she wants harsher penalties to be handed down for motorists who cause these accidents. "Firetrucks are big and red, and they have a lot of lights. "It's ridiculous that our first responders can't do their job because they are in fear for their life," said Sweat. Ambulances are big and red, they're that way for a reason," said Sweat. "So, there's almost no excuse for what's going on." The "Move Over Law," is the state law Sweat is urging Memphis drivers to respect when they see police lights or emergency crews responding to a scene. WMC-TV NBC 5 MEMPHIS |
