VIDEO: At least six people, including a Chicago firefighter, were injured Sunday morning after a series of crashes that began after a hit-and-run collision on the Eisenhower Expressway and ended with one driver being cited for driving under the influence, authorities said. According to Illinois State Police, troopers responded to a hit-and-run crash in the westbound lanes near California Avenue at approximately 4:54 a.m. Sunday. While on scene approximately 45 minutes after the crash, an Infiniti sedan slammed into an ISP squad car and a Chicago fire truck, according to authorities. Just moments after that collision, another sedan struck a tow truck that had responded to the scene, police said. In all, six individuals were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crashes. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO VIDEO: Three people were killed after a car crashed into a tree and caught on fire in Gurnee early Sunday morning, according to police. Police responded to a call of flames coming from a tree line along route 132 and North Greenleaf Street in Gurnee around 2:00 a.m. The driver of the SUV drove off the road and crashed into a tree causing the car to catch fire, police say. All three occupants of the car were pronounced dead on the scene. There were no other fatalities or injuries reported and the crash is still under investigation. WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO The Decatur Fire Department responded to a report of a house on fire at the coroner of N. College and Waggoner, Sunday morning. Fire crews arrived on the scene at 11:28 a.m. to a story and a half vacant house with heavy fire coming from the upstairs windows. Firefighters made an aggressive fire attack, and quickly brought the fire under control by 12:08 p.m. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. The investigation into the cause of this fire is ongoing. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR A 63-year-old man was killed in a Cicero fire Monday morning, officials said. The fire broke out after midnight in the 3100-block of South 53rd Street, officials said. An 82-year-old woman was rescued from the fire, but a 62-year-old man believed to be her son died in the fire, officials said. The victim was watching TV in the front room and officials said it appears the fire started in the basement right under the front room. The man has been identified to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Dale Forst. The family has five cats, with three of them accounted for and two still missing. The cause of the fire is under investigation but is believed to be accidental, possibly involving a candle. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Congratulations to the four Joliet Public Schools District 86 students who were first winners in the 2022 Joliet Fire Department Fire Safety Poster Contest. This year's theme was "Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape." The student winners, parents, and teachers were recognized at the Exchange Club Firefighter of the Year luncheon at the Jacob Henry Mansion. District 86 student first place winners were: 1st Grade: Alexis Resendes, Carl Sandburg Elementary, teacher: Irene Kratcisin; 2nd Grade: Stephania Diaz, Edna Keith Elementary, teacher: Tameka Gadlen; 3rd Grade: Tre Youngman, Pershing Elementary, teacher: Kathryn Hackney; and 5th Grade: Jackeline Barba, Eisenhower Academy, teacher: Jillian Herbert. Over 400 posters were submitted from local schools for the annual contest. JOLIET PATCH Keeping kids safe and educated during a fire was the theme at the open house hosted at the Roanoke Fire Department's main station Sunday. To celebrate the past week being Fire Prevention Week, first responders taught kids about how to stay safe if a fire breaks out at home. Along with learning fire safety tips like ‘stop, drop and roll," families had the opportunity to ride a fire truck, get their faces painted, and enjoy food in the company of the community. Parent Kassie Robertson, an insurance worker, says she knows firsthand how traumatizing a house fire can become. By coming out Sunday, she wanted to make sure her kids were familiar with their local firefighters, and to prepare for anything. "It's important to get kids involved and get them out, to just learn how to both be safe and keep their families safe," she says. WEEK-TV NBC 25 PEORIA |

Evansville and Henderson fire crews are on the scene of a business fire at the corner of East Franklin Street and Morton Ave. Firefighters say they saw smoke coming from the Morton Warehouse as they approached the building and were able to determine it was coming from the warehouse. Evansville police are also on the scene. EFD are calling the fire a "defensive fire," and are currently working to prevent further spread of the blaze. Since it's ignition around 5 a.m., the fire has spread to multiple nearby structures and a building has collapsed. The Department of Transportation has closed the Lloyd Expressway near 41 and it is advised that commuters avoid the area. WEHT-TV ABC 25 EVANSVILLE A recently retired firefighter is using social media to give people a front row seat to the local action. From car fires, truck fires, house fires, Albuquerque firefighters have seen it all. "Wildfires are a big thing here now, hazardous material calls, medical calls, the old fallen and I can't get up thing. No, we pick up grandmas and grandpas in the middle of the night pretty frequently," said Eric Knight a retired Albuquerque firefighter. Knight saw it all for more than two decades. He retired from the department last year, but is still part of the Albuquerque Retirees Association, and works with the local firefighters union. "I've lived here my whole life, so I've always wanted to work for Albuquerque," said Knight. And he's grown to love to document the work too. He's the face behind "afdfirewire" on Instagram. "Early in my career I was told to try and document it," said Knight.
