9/11 20 years later: Chicago, suburbs remember with day long events VIDEO: 9/11 is a day forever etched in many memories. The September 11th terror attacks took place exactly 20 years ago Saturday. Several ceremonies and tributes took place in the Chicago area in honor and remembrance of the nearly 3,000 lives lost. "I stand before you with a heavy heart... it's still hard to think about," said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot. The solemn day of remembrance in Chicago began with a large gathering at Daley Plaza to honor those who lost their lives in the deadliest act of terrorism on U.S. soil. Among the nearly 3,000 people killed that day, 441 first responders. "They made the ultimate sacrifice. And in this nation will always remember and honor them," said Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown. The morning ceremony included an all-call on the radios for law enforcement. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO 2 Dead, 4 Injured After Apparent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Chicago Two women are dead and four people are injured, including three children, from an apparent carbon monoxide poisoning at a home in the Little Village neighborhood Friday afternoon. Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt told reporters fire officials were called to the house on the 2800 block of West 22nd Place at around 1:40 p.m. when a neighbor smelled gas coming from the building. Firefighters pried their way inside the home and found a woman in her 50s and another woman in her 70s dead in the basement unit of the house. An entire family on the first floor — one adult and three children — were taken to Stroger Hospital where they are listed in stable condition. No one else was found in a sweep of the home. According to Merritt, carbon monoxide levels inside the home were measured at 200 parts per million. Experts classify exposure to a measurement of 150 parts per million as extremely dangerous. WAGA-TV FOX 5 ATLANTA Former FDNY commissioner on losing 343 firefighters on 9/11: ‘We had the best fire chiefs in the world' Former FDNY commissioner Thomas von Essen told "Fox News Reporting" on Saturday that the 343 firefighters who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks were the "best fire chiefs in the world." Of the 2,753 people killed at the World Trade Center, 343 were first responders from the Fire Department of New York, while another 71 were law enforcement officers from 10 different agencies. "We had the best group of fire chiefs probably anywhere in the world because New York City had so many high rise buildings, so many dangerous buildings, so many prevention laws, and codes and everything else," he said. The firefighter chiefs "really knew what they were doing," Von Essen continued, noting that once the second tower was hit by the plane, they had to "split them up." "I was in the North tower lobby and we sent half of them to the south tower to try to get a handle of what was going on there," he recalled. FOX NEWS Mississippi county gets new $1.4M one-of-a-kind 9/11-themed fire truck PHOTOS: Madison County took delivery of a new one-of-a-kind 20th Remembrance of 9/11 Rosenbauer 101 King Cobra Fire Truck on Thursday afternoon. The new $1.4 million truck was delivered after being featured at a national fire chiefs conference recently where it was highlighted because of its one-of-a-kind 9/11 paint job to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 featuring all the names of the New York Firefighters who were killed responding to the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers. The 9/11 20th Remembrance theme was designed with the help and input of New York City firefighters, said Donnie Weeks of Bonaventure Fire and Safety of Monticello who sold the Rosenbauer truck to Madison County. ONLINE MADISON New study aims to track search-and-rescue workers' exposure to carcinogens at Florida's Surfside condo collapse If you worked at or near the site of the building collapse in Surfside, researchers with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine want to examine your toenails. Dr. Natasha Schaefer Solle, a research assistant professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, said the nail can reveal cancer risks. "A first responder will be able to clip their toenails, mail them to us and we take them into the lab, and we will be able to see the exposure they had heavy metals over a long period of time," Schaefer Solle said. The researchers are hoping that close to 1,000 people — including police officers, firefighters, and volunteers — will participate. The new study launched this week. It will closely monitor workers over the next several years to examine the effects of the exposure. WPLG-TV ABC 10 MIAMI PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
