Fire Chief James Whiteford, who has been a full-time member of the Edwardsville Fire Department for 28 years, announced on Friday, September 20, that he plans to retire next month to spend more time with his family. Whiteford's final day on the job will be Friday, October 11. A Florida native, Whiteford came to the Edwardsville Fire Department in 1995 as a volunteer firefighter after three years volunteering for the Williamson County, Illinois, Fire Protection District. He started his career as a full-time firefighter and paramedic in Edwardsville on September 23, 1996, later obtaining a fire administration degree from Western Illinois University, executive fire officer certification from the National Fire Academy and numerous technical certifications.

The Illinois Fire Service Institute hosted an event this past weekend in Champaign to give female firefighters some hands-on training. Attendees had three options to pick from, officer training, basic firefighting or auto extraction. Whichever they chose, they were sure to leave with more experience than they came with. "Our goal is to provide training and networking opportunities for female firefighters throughout the state of Illinois," Fire Service Women of Illinois President Christie Lynch said. That goal was accomplished at the Illinois Fire Service Institute. IFSI offered free training for anyone who signed up, thanks to a grant from the Office of the State Fire Marshal. "Any and all training in the fire service is essential," Deputy Director of Academic Operations Heather Moore said.

A 5-alarm fire damaged multiple buildings, snarled traffic and caused the light rail to suspend operations for hours Sunday in downtown Baltimore. Crews responded to a building fire around 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of Lombard and Eutaw streets, just hours before the Orioles hosted a game at nearby Camden Yards. No injuries were reported. Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said that upwards of five commercial buildings and an apartment sustained "significant damage." "We have some buildings with extensive fire damage," Wallace said. "We have other buildings where fire was trying to progress and we used a lot of water to stop that progress. There's significant damage to all of those buildings." More than 200 firefighters battled the fire.

PHOTOS/VIDEOS: Despite forecasts of heavy rain and even lightning, the scene at Memorial Park Saturday morning was as bright as an autumn day could be for loved ones to honor those they've lost. Every September, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) holds their Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial ceremony in Colorado Springs to remember those who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year. This year marked an especially solemn occasion for the city as it marked the first time in over a decade that a Colorado Springs Fire Department firefighter's name has been added to the wall of honor. "This year is different for our locals," Colorado Springs Professional Fire Fighters IAFF Local 5 President Curt Crumb said. "We grieve with you, as we have lost one of our own: Bobby Keese."

After more than 2,000 gallons of gasoline leaked into the sewer lines, homes in a section of Ventura were evacuated for hours on Sunday. Evacuation orders and warning were issued around 10 a.m. Sunday and then lifted by 4:40 p.m. as city crews worked to mitigate the spill and ventilate the fumes building up in the system. The source of the leak was a Sinclair gas station on Harbor Boulevard, authorities said at an afternoon press conference. The station owner estimated a loss of more than 2,000 gallons of gas leaked into the system. About 150 homes in Ventura were ordered to evacuate Sunday due to the hazardous materials incident. "When the gas is present it's like standing in a gas station right over your gas tank," said resident Rob Crandall. "It's very strong."
