| Peoria Fire Department responded to more than 21,000 calls in 2023, report says VIDEO: Peoria firefighters responded to almost 5% more calls in 2023 than in 2022, the department said Wednesday in their annual report. The report said of the 21,267 calls, nearly 80% were medical in nature. Only 4% or about 851 calls, were fire-related, the report stated. Response times, a key point of contention the department has had when it comes to budgetary issues, were less than six minutes for medical calls and about 10 minutes for fires. "I want to congratulate the entire department for their unwavering dedication and daily professionalism to lead this Fire Department into the future," Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger said. "Without every last firefighter, the excellent service we provide would not be possible." The increase, the report said, was due to changes in seasonal illnesses and changes in the weather. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Man dies after falling into elevator shaft in Joliet, police say A man died after falling into an elevator shaft Tuesday in the south suburbs. The 23-year-old victim died after falling around 3:40 p.m. at the Joliet Equipment Corporation building, located at 225 Maple Street in Joliet, police said. The man was with other employees on the second floor of the building. They were moving cabinets into the elevator, Joliet police said. The victim was in the elevator when it began to rise. The door of the elevator was blocked by a cabinet, investigators were told. He attempted to escape the elevator, but became stuck between the elevator floor and the ceiling of the second floor, police said. He then fell into the elevator shaft and was gravely injured. | VIDEO: California pallet yard fire forces school, road closures A multi-acre pallet yard fire with 20 to 50 foot flames near Tracy lit up the early morning sky on Thursday. Since about 2 a.m., fire crews with the South San Joaquin County Fire Authority and several other surrounding agencies have been responding to a fire located in a 6-acre pallet yard along Grant Line Road. Fire Chief Randall Bradley said that when the first units arrived on scene they found the fire to be well involved and within a matter of minutes the fire was elevated to a three alarm. One of the major challenges for responding crews was the absence of a municipal water supply at the pallet yard, requiring water tenders to be brought in. Bradley said that six water tender were called on to provide the needed fire retardant for the 12 fire engines and three ladder trucks that responded to the fire. City leaders have passed new laws, increased fines, initiated more aggressive regulation, and supported pilot projects with businesses and nonprofits. That's because some cheap, retrofitted lithium-ion batteries for e-bikes and e-scooters don't meet safety standards and are dangerously explosive. When the batteries ignite, they cause fast-moving, toxic fires that officials and experts say are difficult to extinguish. New York is considered an epicenter of this new public safety problem. Its density leads workers to charge e-bikes inside apartment buildings and the city's large population drives high demand for delivery services, according to public safety experts. Official data shows the rate of fires from lithium-ion batteries in the city has decreased so far this year. GOTHAMIST In 1877, 21 died, but 2 heroes emerged from a six-story hotel fire in Missouri PHOTOS: In the years after the Civil War, the finest lodging downtown was the six-story Southern Hotel, at Fourth and Walnut streets. It took up most of the block where the Stadium East Garage stands today. Next door was Tony Faust's Oyster Bar, the city's best restaurant. In those days, hotel fires were rightly to be dreaded. The Southern proudly claimed to have a new "annunciator," an early heat-sensing alarm. Shortly after 1 a.m. on April 11, 1877, the first alarms were screams from guests and employees who saw flames climb the freight elevator from the basement. Most of the 300 guests escaped, but the whirling blaze killed 21 guests and workers and collapsed the Southern into a jagged, smoking pile. Among the dead were eight who jumped. Fighting the fire gave St. Louis two genuine heroes. ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH - METERED SITE Ford recalls nearly 43,000 SUVs due to gas leaks that can cause fires, but remedy won't fix leaks Ford is recalling nearly 43,000 small SUVs because gasoline can leak from the fuel injectors onto hot engine surfaces, increasing the risk of fires. But the recall remedy does not include repairing the fuel leaks. The recall covers certain Bronco Sport SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years, as well as Escape SUVs from 2022. All have 1.5-liter engines. Ford says in documents filed with U.S. safety regulators that fuel injectors can crack, and gasoline or vapor can accumulate near ignition sources, possibly touching off fires. Dealers will install a tube to let gasoline flow away from hot surfaces to the ground below the vehicle.
