The Savoy Fire Department has received an Assistance to Firefighter grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration. The grant amount is $84,631.43. Savoy will contribute a 5% cost share totaling $4,232. The grant will be used to purchase an in-station Exhaust Removal System manufactured and installed by MagneGrip Group.  

Four people were taken to the hospital after a fire at John A Logan College. According to the college, around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday a power failure trapped two college employees in an elevator and caused a small fire that was able to be put out by campus police. The state Fire Marshall is investigating the cause. Firefighters rescued the employees from the elevator. The employ yes, along with two firefighters, were taken to area hospitals. Due to smoke damage, the campus will be closed through Friday, but classes and other services will continue online.  

A semi-truck containing strawberries caught fire and was destroyed by flames, firefighters said. Effingham firefighters said they responded Wednesday to I-70 eastbound at mile marker 88, where they found a truck loaded with California strawberries engulfed in flames. The entire truck cab was fully involved, along with the front and mid-sections of the trailer. Crews did not have a hydrant nearby, so they called a water tender from the Watson Fire Protection District. Effingham Fire Chief Bob Tutko said the 33-year-old male driver from California reported he had stopped about an hour before the fire for fuel. He performed a safety check at that time and found nothing wrong with the truck.  

Three fire engines carrying Danville firefighters responded Wednesday afternoon to a house fire at 1319 Robinson St. Smoke could be seen from miles away when the fire erupted shortly before 1:30 p.m. Paramedics were on the scene. No one was injured. Five residents of the home were displaced.  

A firefighter narrowly missed what could have been a dangerous situation. Sacramento Fire crews responded around 2:15 a.m. Thursday to deal with a pickup truck that caught fire near the intersection of Beloit Drive and Main Avenue During the firefight, one of the tires on the truck exploded right in front of a firefighter. CBS13's camera was rolling right when the incident took place. The firefighter escaped without serious injury. Exactly what caused the fire is now under investigation.  

the wake of last September's explosion in Farmington, which was caused by a gas leak and claimed the life of Farmington Fire Department Captain Michael Bell and injured several others, Governor Janet Mills announced Wednesday that her administration has purchased gas detection meters for twenty fire departments across Maine. The gas detection meters will allow firefighters to detect the presence of dangerous gasses and take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and others. Two extra meters were purchased in the event they are needed. The remaining 20 meters will be distributed to the fire departments of Brownfield, Burlington, Cherryfield, Corinth, Danforth, Dixmont, Hiram, Littleton, Machias, Marshfield, Millinocket, Minot, North Haven, North Lakes, Old Orchard Beach, Portage Lake, Roxbury, Washburn, Waterboro and Winterport.  

The large overnight fire in Durham may bring back memories of a similar one three years ago in Raleigh. During the historic Raleigh fire, flames spread to nine buildings – it was a much bigger fire. Many people are asking: Why did the Raleigh fire expand so much farther and cause so much more damage than the Durham fire? Sandy Kromenacker, a fire expert in Raleigh, compared this Durham fire to the memorable downtown Raleigh fire in 2017, saying, "Both properties were under construction. Both properties had the same type of construction: Woodframe construction." According to Durham resident Russell Erickson, the flames in Durham on Tuesday night were huge and took about 30 minutes to get under control. The downtown Raleigh fire, however, was believed to be Raleigh's largest in almost 100 years. Officials said 130 firefighters from the city and around Wake County battled the blaze "into the night."  

In a town where nearly everyone lives in the same building, COVID-19 has emerged. The Prince William Sound community of Whittier, where around 85% percent of its 280 year-round residents live in the 14-story Begich Towers building, now has six positive resident cases among a family there, according to Jim Hunt, Whittier city manager. It's not the first time COVID-19 has surfaced in the community, but it's the first time the virus has shown up among residents. About a month ago, there were two cases among workers in businesses along the harbor — one part-time nonresident and someone who lived outside of Whittier, Hunt said. Before that, in early June, 11 seasonal seafood processor workers in Whittier also tested positive for COVID-19 and left for Anchorage along with their close contacts to isolate and quarantine.  

VIDEO: A historic building in Uptown in Kenosha that houses several businesses and apartments was the scene of a massive fire early Wednesday morning. The fire, which was called in just before 8 a.m., apparently started at the Music Outlet, 6217 22nd Ave., according to Kenosha Fire Chief Charles Leipzig. Leipzig said the investigation was still ongoing and the official cause of the fire was yet to be determined, but it was believed a person inside the record store was burning incense in the early-morning hours and attempted to extinguish the fire alone, but was unsuccessful. That individual suffered what Leipzig described as both a minor burn and smoke inhalation injury, but Leipzig was unsure of his medical condition. "I don't believe he was immediately taken to the hospital," Leipzig said.
