'Historic': Springfield Fire Department gets nod for new equipment, 3 new stations Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder said he envisioned ground being broken for three new stations for the Springfield Fire Department after city council members kept the allocation for their construction at $10 million at Tuesday's special budget meeting. The 16 amendments to the corporate fund budget and City Water, Light and Power budget that passed added a net gain of $1.25 million, according to budget director William McCarty. Only Springfield Ward 7 Ald. Joe McMenamin voted against the FY23 budget. A $6.2 million appropriation for the purchase of seven new pieces of equipment for the SFD passed with no discussion. Council members rejected by a 9-1 vote an amendment that would have proposed the construction of two firehouses. WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO Illinois tax credit bill looks to recruit volunteer firefighters, EMS personnel A bill looking to help recruit volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel in Illinois has passed the state Senate. Senate Bill 3027 offers an income tax credit to help attract these workers. There would be a $500 tax credit offered for volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel who are a member of or work for a fire department of fire protection district for nine moths or more and do not receive over $10,000 for their volunteer services during the taxable year. Current laws do not have a tax credit. New York, Iowa and Maryland offer a similar credit. "Many communities rely on volunteer fire departments when they are in a crisis," State Sen. Christopher Belt (D-Swansea) said. "These fire departments across Illinois are struggling with a shortage of firefighters and EMS personnel volunteers." VIDEO: Two people injured escaping apartment fire in California Two people jumped out of a second-story window to escape a fire in South Land Park Thursday morning. Sacramento Fire Battalion Chief Dave Lauchner said fire crews were called to the complex along Land Park Drive near 43rd Avenue around 4 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered heavy fire on the backside of the apartment building. Fire crews also found two people on the ground, injured from escaping the fire. They were transported to an area hospital, where they currently remain. About 15 people have been displaced from their homes as a result of the fire, Lauchner said. One of the two residents who escaped through the window is confirmed to be a disabled veteran. "My neighbors, I hope they're doing fine, I pray they're doing fine," one displaced resident, Sean Rodriguez, told ABC10. "I just made sure everybody got out safely. KXTV ABC 10 SACRAMENTO Memories of 1985 South Dakota grain elevator explosion remain ‘clear as a bell' PHOTOS: It was a quiet Saturday evening, a little past 6 p.m., and Duane and Marlys Tieszen were just sitting down in their kitchen to enjoy a snack. "We were sitting right at this table, and we had just gotten out a pail of ice cream and had bowls on the table," Duane told the Mitchell Republic in a recent interview. "And our place started jumping. That's exactly what it did." A series of three explosions, all in quick succession, had thundered through the community of Marion, a city of about 800 residents located approximately 45 minutes west-southwest of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Duane, mayor of the town at the time who also served as an emergency medical technician and firefighter, and Maryls, also an EMT, knew immediately that something had gone terribly wrong. "I ran to the door and I could see the fire out there. I (told Marlys) 'grab your jacket, we gotta go,'" Duane recalled. GRAND FORKS HERALD Minnesota Fire Captain Creates Undergarment To Protect Firefighters From Cancer-Causing Chemicals VIDEO: They are the heroes we call when we need help. But firefighters need some help of their own. They are getting cancer at a high rate because of the elements they are exposed to. "We have a 9% higher chance than the general public of getting cancer, and we have a 14% greater risk of dying of those cancers," said Mark Munson, a captain with St. Paul Fire Department. Two years ago, a fellow St. Paul firefighter died from cancer he got on the job, and earlier this month, an Albert Lea firefighter died of cancer also linked to on the job exposure. Munson says it's become too common. "The names are just coming," he said. After years of battling blazes, Monson is now fighting to keep his peers alive. Munson got a big idea from the uniform hoods firefighters use that cover the head and neck. Munson felt like there were other parts of their body that needed protection, specifically high exposure areas like underarms and groin. "I thought, why aren't we protecting those areas?" he said. WCCO-TV CBS 4 MINNEAPOLIS Drone operator who harassed Virginia firefighters sentenced to probation The operator of a rogue drone that harassed Salem firefighters from the air was put on probation for two years Tuesday. "It was an absolutely stupid mistake," James Russell Weeks III said during a sentencing hearing in Roanoke's federal court. "I totally regret the decision I made." Weeks, 40, had earlier pleaded guilty to operating an unregistered aircraft the day he piloted his drone over a Salem fire station, swooping down repeatedly on firefighters and police officers who were gathered outside. First responders were more annoyed than intimidated by the bizarre incident, according to court documents. Nonetheless, U.S. District Judge Elizabeth Dillon said there was a risk of harm. If nothing else, she said, firefighters were distracted at a time when they were on call to respond to emergencies. Prosecutors did not seek a jail term. ROANOKE TIMES - METERED SITE Fire Department in Colorado Using Ultrasound To Aid Diagnosis In The Field South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) covers 287 square miles and serves 540,000 residents of the southern metropolitan area of Denver. During 2021, SMFR responded to 44,760 in-district incidents and 29,422 or 66% of those were medical; 20,458 of the medical calls resulted in transport to the hospital. When safely possible, SMFR administers medical assistance in the field that assists and hastens patient care upon arrival at the hospital. When appropriate, SMFR will treat and resolve the medical issue without hospitalization, if that is in the patient's best interests. The Emergency Medical Services Division (EMS) of SMFR, "continually searches for the most recent and applicable medical modalities to improve patient outcomes and the patient experience." In 2018, SMFR EMS began to evaluate the potential use of Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) to assist its paramedics in confirming specific diagnoses in the field to forward their goal of improving patient outcomes.
