Colona Fire Department proposes rescue tax on Henry County primary ballot Fire departments across the state and country are facing a severe staffing shortage right now. Those departments are struggling to recruit and retain new firefighters. The all-volunteer fire department in Colona is all too familiar with these hiring struggles. For eight months, it had a sign outside Station 1 advertising that it was looking for volunteer firefighters to work during the day. Chief John Swan said out of the three applicants, he's only been able to hire one and that firefighter is still on probation. The department currently has 24 volunteers on staff, and Swan said even though that number may seem like a lot, because the volunteers have other day jobs, it's not. "We have an excellent fire department, excellent men and women are firefighters," Swan said. "We just need more of them." WQAD-TV ABC 8 MOLINE Vehicle Fire Near Highland PHOTO: The Highland Fire Department was dispatched to a vehicle fire at the rest area near Highland on the eastbound side of Interstate 70 Tuesday, June 21, around 3 PM. The unoccupied vehicle was engulfed in flames upon firefighters' arrival. Crews worked to suppress the fire and protect nearby exposures. No injuries were reported. The Highland Pierron Fire Protection District provided mutual aid. WGEL-FM 101.7 GREENVILLE Man Injured After Chunks of Brick Fall From Bridge in Chicago A man was injured after chunks of concrete began raining down from a bridge along Chicago's lakeshore on Wednesday. According to Craig Bradley, he was walking his dogs near Navy Pier when bricks began to fall from a bridge on Lower Lake Shore Drive Wednesday afternoon at approximately 4 p.m. "All of the sudden these bricks fall from the bridge," Bradley said. "And I'm thinking ‘did someone throw something at me? What's going on?'" Bradley says that his arm was hit, but he was counting his blessings after his puppy escaped harm. "My dog was in the middle of Lake Shore Drive, and his leash was severed," he said. He also says that there were children nearby when the bricks came crumbling off the bridge, but they were uninjured as well. "There was a group of kids behind me, and if they would've gotten hit, it would've been ballgame over," he said. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO 'The Great Race' rolls through Plainfield for first time ever Some classic cars were rolling into the southwest suburbs Wednesday night. It was the first time "The Great Race" had passed through Plainfield. The event can draw huge crowds and planning for it took months, but the fire chief said they were ready. "This started planning two months ago. Right now, we have our medics down here. We are going to have a crew here and bike medics down there, so we are gonna take care of all the downtown areas so if we get a call down here, we can respond immediately," said Plainfield Fire Chief Jon Stratton. The fire chief was expecting three to five-thousand people to fill downtown Plainfield for the event. People traveled from all over the Midwest to catch a glimpse of the historic race. The Great Race stretches from Rhode Island to North Dakota, with Plainfield as the only stop in Illinois. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Eight people displaced after a house fire in Washington state A family of six and two other people are without a home this morning after a fire in a Franklin County home this morning. Franklin County firefighters say the fire began around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning at the intersection of Metcalf Rd. and Sagemoor Rd. When crews arrived they said the fire had spread to a nearby power pole and crews had to tend to the pole before the house. The fire spread to a shop and several trailers in the backyard of the house before reaching the house. Several propane tanks ignited and exploded during the fire. Franklin County Sheriff's Office helped the eight people displaced call Benton/Franklin Housing and the Red Cross to accommodate a current living situation. KNDO-TV NBC 23 YAKIMA 'Need to be more proactive': Kentucky first responder says new law is step in right direction Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear ceremonially signed House Bill 562, relating to mental health for first responders. The bill establishes 48 hours of time off for police officers and firefighters following critical incidents. The bill also redefines a critical incident. It includes officer-involved shootings, serious vehicle crashes, the death of a colleague or partner and other circumstances. Brian O'Neil, president of the Louisville Professional Firefighters, said bills like HB562 are working to address a longstanding stigma among first responders. "You're supposed to just suck it up and be tough and deal with everything. And certainly, we do," he said. "We've done a lot better over the last several years with trying to do away with the stigma." Not addressing the root traumas of the job though, can lead to dire consequences. WHAS-TV ABC 11 LOUISVILLE Texas EMS to teach Guam EMTs life support techniques this summer UT Health East Texas EMS paramedics will teach roughly 20 EMTs from Guam this summer about specialized clinical training to become accredited in advanced life support techniques. "They're going to experience high performance 911 training through UT Health East Texas EMS and receive training from paramedics who are actively working in the field," said TC Howard, chief operating officer of the School of EMS, which helped coordinate the effort. According to the announcement from UT Health East Texas, the Guam Fire Department officials contacted Howard over two years ago to transition from basic care to a paramedic level. Guam is an island territory of the United States in the Pacific Ocean. Paramedic intern, Patrick Flores, didn't think twice about traveling 24 hours to East Texas to become a paramedic. KYTX-TV CBS 19 NACOGDOCHES A sacrifice honored: New York remembers firefighter who died 100 years ago in school blaze One hundred years ago, on a distant Feb. 16 evening, a blaze erupted at the Prospect School. The tragedy that occurred during the blaze has become a part of village lore. And the firefighter who gave his life was memorialized during a Tuesday evening ceremony at the location. It was freezing cold outside when the village's firefighters responded. Fireman Milton Meisner, along with Arthur Underwood, had climbed a long extension ladder to battle the fire that had moved to the building's attic along a ventilation shaft. The ladder broke as the two young firefighters were working their way down to the ground. Underwood was halfway down when the ladder broke, and severely broke his left ankle and leg as a result of the fall. Meisner was near the top and fell about 25 feet. He succumbed to his injuries while being driven to a Batavia hospital. AnonyMouse has so far revealed two Boston installations on Instagram — a bookstore and a fire station — but there are a handful more still out there, according to the group. "We started back in 2016 in southern Sweden, a couple of us met up and started discussing just creating something together and the dialogue shifted towards our childhood love of the works of Walt Disney, Don Bluth, Beatrix Potter and Swedish author Astrid Lindgren," the collective told Boston publication in an email. "After a while we kind of centered around these small shops, since it was something we, ourselves, would have loved to stumble over as kids." BOSTON.COM PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
