Survey shows most first responders have post-retirement careers The results of a new survey conducted by the Illinois Public Pension Fund Association (IPPFA) indicate the majority of Illinois firefighting and law enforcement professionals continue working in a variety of professions after retiring from their first responder jobs. Firefighters and law enforcement officers typically retire at a younger age due to the demands of the occupation than those in other lines of work. The IPPFA survey, conducted during the fall and winter of 2020, measured how many of these public safety employees work following their police or fire retirements, the types of jobs the retirees take, and how satisfied they are with their post-retirement employment. "This is the first in-depth survey of what these first responders do after retiring from their primary careers, which is important because they usually have more years to work after retirement than workers in other professions," said IPPFA President James McNamee. CANTON DAILY LEDGER Firefighters Attack Box Trailer Fire In Wood River Quickly, Contain Blaze Firefighters on Wednesday afternoon quickly extinguished a box trailer fire at Waggoner Equipment Rentals, LLC, at 6 Helmkamp Drive, Wood River. Wood River Fire Chief Wade Stalhut said a crew was scrapping a box trailer with a cutting torch and the box trailer caught fire. Initially, because of the smoke involved, a Box Alarm was called, but once Wood River firefighters arrived, Edwardsville and Roxana returned to service. East Alton Fire Department and Rosewood Heights did a station standby. Shortly after, another grass fire call came in to Wood River Fire Department on Payne Street. More details on that are to come. Stalhut said the box trailer fire was contained to it and didn't spread anywhere else. He said because of the quick firefighters' response and mutual aid assistance, a nearby house was not hit with the fire. RIVERBENDER Fountain Bluff wildfire burns nearly 30 acres A wildfire in the Shawnee National Forest has now burned through nearly 30 acres. The fire, in the Fountain Bluff area of Jackson County, was first reported late Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, the US Forest Service said firefighters had been establishing control lines in an attempt to protect any infrastructure or private property. Rain in the forecast Thursday and later this week will help put out the fire, which is now thought to be human-caused. Vehicles travelling on Route 3 in the Gorham area should be alert of smoke blowing over the road and emergency vehicles in the area. The FAA has also placed a temporary flight restriction over the area. The restriction includes drones or any other unmanned aircraft. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Watseka Fire Department working on changing process for some funds The Watseka Fire Department is working on changing the process for some funds it receives. Chief Tim Ketchum told the Watseka City Council public safety committee about the foreign fire tax income. "Something was brought to my attention by one of my offices last week," he said. "The city receives a fee for the amount of money called the foreign fire tax income. It's an undeterminable amount. It changes every year but it's brought into the city. "This has happened for some time. I don't know how long. It's been brought to my attention that we have to make some changes to that process to follow the statute," he said. Ketchum distributed copies of the statute to the committee. "Any insurance company that is incorporated outside the state of Illinois has to, per Illinois State Statute, pay in a fee of two percent of their premiums they receive within our fire district to the fire department. IROQUOIS COUNTY TIMES-REPUBLIC State Fire Marshal reminds Illinoisans to practice safety The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) reminds Illinoisans to test, check for expired alarms and replace batteries in their smoke alarms as they change the clock this weekend. "Working smoke alarms are critical to preventing serious injuries and death in the case of a house fire. It only takes a couple of extra minutes to push the test button on smoke alarm or CO alarm to ensure it's working. That extra minute or two could save your life one day," said State Fire Marshall Matt Perez. "In 2020, the pandemic slowed the efforts of our "Be Alarmed" program. Still, we had 185 participating fire departments from 61 counties in Illinois install 1,655 10-year sealed smoke alarms in Illinois homes. Thanks to their dedication, there are nearly 600 homes in Illinois protected and nearly 1,400 residents educated on smoke alarm maintenance, home fire safety and home fire escape plans. Replacing broken or expired alarms not only helps to create a fire-safe home, but working alarms provide early warning helping prevent loss of life due to fire" CANTON DAILY LEDGER PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

WAVE-TV NBC 3 LOUISVILLE New Jersey first responder plays famous piano to honor frontline workers VIDEO: This year has been incredibly stressful for all of us, but our first responders have bravely and selflessly led the way. On Wednesday, one of our frontline heroes got the healing opportunity to make music on a legendary piano. It's something a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Princeton hasn't done since the pandemic began. "I can sort of have in the back of my mind just the incredible places that this piano has been and the folks who have played on it," says Lee Sandberg, a volunteer firefighter for the Princeton Fire Department and an EMT for the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad. "I mean, it really is just a dream come true." The Steinway piano was handpicked and signed by legendary pianist Yuja Wang and has been used in iconic venues including Carnegie Hall. "To have an idol that you respect and are completely in awe of, and to be able to use that piano yourself, it really is kind of a humbling experience," Sandberg says. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA 'Nightmare' #13 fire station in Florida gets more help VIDEO: Fire Station 13 sits in the shadow of SheiKra, the towering roller coaster at Busch Gardens. The station gets more calls for service than anywhere else in Tampa. It's so busy city councilman Luis Vera says it's earned the nickname 'Nightmare on Annie Street' because if you work here, don't plan on getting much sleep. "It's a running joke, but the truth is they shouldn't have Freddy Kruger as their mascot because people know that if you work here, you are going to be overworked," said Viera. Station 13 is actually one of the busiest fire stations in the nation with more than 10,000 service calls a year. It also covers a lot of ground. "It's way too much. You are talking about the communities off Fowler Avenue, the University area, Busch Boulevard. Sulpher Springs, etc.," said Viera. And up until now, the firefighters here only had one engine to work with. Now they have another one that will help with the workload.
