Driver dies after SUV crashes into small body of water in Jackson County The Jackson County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a SUV crashed in Grand Tower, Illinois. The driver died after the vehicle traveled off the road and into a small body of water near Ragweed Lane, the sheriff's office says. In a news release about the incident, the sheriff's office says a 2004 Toyota 4-Runner was driving along Highway 3 near Ragweed Lane Wednesday morning when the SUV left the road, went through an field and into the body of water. Deputies say a passenger in the vehicle was able to escape and ran to a nearby home to call 911. Fire crews responded, including the Tower Rock Fire Department and the Murphysboro Fire Department, as did the sheriff's office's boat team and a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System dive team. The boat team and dive team found the SUV, and it was pulled from the water. WPSD-TV NBC 6 ILLINOIS Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes to be honored by Red Cross Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes has dedicated his life to his community, serving first as a volunteer fireman for the city of Morris before eventually becoming fire chief. Steffes attributes his desire to serve to the people he was surrounded by growing up. "I remember my parents taking me to the pancake breakfast twice a year – April and November at the firehouse," Steffes said. "I remember seeing those people and thinking, ‘Wow, what a life,'" he said. "You'd get to see the firemen and fire trucks, and you could get to see the camaraderie between the guys and girls. That was the biggest thing." Steffes obtained his first full-time position with the city after working as a volunteer fireman for 10 months, working as a full-time police officer for about 23 years. He continued volunteering for the fire department during his downtime until he became Morris' first full-time fire chief 10 years ago. MORRIS HERALD-NEWS - METERED SITE Springfield council OKs purchase of property for west-side firehouse, stirring emotions again Emotions continued to bubble up about the placement of Springfield Fire Department houses as the full city council approved the purchase of land at the southeast corner of Lawrence Avenue and Rickard Road which will be home to Station No. 8. Meanwhile, Ward 6 Ald. Kristin DiCenso said it is time for the city "to move on and find another location that's more suitable" for Station No. 6 as it awaits further soil testing from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency at the proposed 11th and Ash property where Honeywell-Hobbs once sat. The city wants to move the station two blocks away, from its current location at 2156 S. Ninth St., but out of Ward 6. SFD Chief Brandon Blough contended the city "can't cut bait on this not knowing (the outcome)" of the situation and thought the property could be remediated. Station No. 8 is currently at 2051 W. Monroe St. THE STATE JOURNAL-REGISTER Man suffers burns in west Bloomington house fire A man who suffered burns was taken Wednesday evening from the scene of a house fire at 1006 W. Jackson St. in Bloomington. Bloomington firefighters were called about 6:37 p.m. to a one-story house with a walkout basement at West Jackson Street and Western Avenue. The man, who was taken from the scene by ambulance, was the only person reported to be at home at the time, firefighters said. His condition was unavailable Wednesday night. The fire was extinguished by 6:45 p.m., firefighters said. It appeared to have started in and was contained to the kitchen area at the back of the house, but smoke damage was reported throughout. There was no damage estimate, and the cause remained under investigation. Normal firefighters were initially asked to assist but were called off while en route. THE PANTAGRAPH PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Railroad fire burns near downtown Phoenix along I-10; freeway reopens Firefighters extinguished a massive fire burning west of downtown Phoenix that temporarily shut down Interstate 10 Wednesday night. The second-alarm fire was burning at Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway near 19th Avenue and McDowell Road on May 4, officials said. First responders discovered a large pile of railroad ties fully engulfed in flames. The situation was treated as a hazmat incident because of the unknown contents of the nearby railcars. The Arizona Dept. of Public Safety shut down I-10 at 7th Avenue for several hours due to the direction of the smoke and the proximity of the fire. "Fire control was achieved approximately two hours after the initial dispatch," officials said in a statement. "Crews will remain on the scene throughout the night to extinguish all remaining hotspots." KSAZ-TV FOX 10 PHOENIX Surviving firefighter of deadly Maryland building collapse honors his fallen colleagues VIDEO: The sole survivor of a deadly building collapse that killed three Baltimore City firefighters honored his fallen comrades Wednesday on International Firefighters Day. Firefighter John McMaster was critically injured on Jan. 24 when he and his fellow firefighters battled a blaze at a vacant home in the 200 block of South Stricker Street in West Baltimore's Mount Clare section. Baltimore City Firefighters Lt. Paul Butrim, Kelsey Sadler and Kenny Lacayo were killed. McMaster was pulled from the rubble and spent three days at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. "To say this year has been challenging would be an understatement. I have witnessed firsthand the dedication and commitment demonstrated by our firefighters to protect the lives of others in our community," McMaster said in a video posted to social media. WBFF-TV FOX 45 BALTIMORE Three workers rescued in South Boston construction site collapse VIDEO: Three workers were injured in a collapse at a construction site in South Boston. Boston Fire Commissioner Jack Dempsey said emergency crews were called to the Edison Power Plant building around 1:40 p.m. Two of the injured workers were able to be removed immediately. A third person was trapped, prompting a rescue operation with about 100 firefighters in support roles, Dempsey said. Dempsey said the worker had part of a wall leaning on his lower legs. He was freed after more than three hours and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. "Demolition drops are very dangerous. Probably more dangerous than putting buildings up," Dempsey said. Dempsey added that the building at 776 Summer Street is old and has experienced other problems over time. "We've had a lot of serious problems with this building over the years," he said. "I recall way back, we had a nine-alarm fire here, so this is nothing new to us." WFXT-TV FOX 25 BOSTON Patio, meditation garden and kitchen prioritize wellbeing of firefighters in new Minnesota station VIDEO: Mental Health Awareness month kicks off this week, which is the same time a brand new fire station opens to the public in Burnsville. It's designed to prioritize the wellbeing of firefighters and paramedics. From a meditation garden to a wellness room, there are many features that promote relaxation. There are also decontamination zones to separate firefighters from the chemicals that put them at a risk that Burnsville Assistance Chief Terry Ritchie says is three times higher than other people to get cancer. "It's extremely important after a fire that we get these guys showered and get that dirty gear off as quick as possible," said Ritchie. "We're saving our own lives." The new station is divided into three contamination zones to segregate dirty equipment and gear recently used on a call from gear that is in the process of decontamination and the fully clean area.
