Several Streamwood facilities are getting a facelift as part of $4 million in capital projects recently approved by the village board. Lombard-based MTI Construction will manage the projects that include work on one of three village fire stations, the village hall's basement restrooms and two village maintenance garages. Work is expected to begin in the coming weeks. Village Manager Sharon Caddigan said funds for the project were earmarked as part of multiyear plan to refurbish facilities that began in 2016. "The biggest chunk (this year) is going to fire station No. 33," Caddigan said. "The other projects are fairly smaller in comparison." The fire station is one of three in the village and was built in 1991. Village officials said the station's sanitary sewer system will be upgraded.

A local first responder is recognized for serving his community for 45 years. Ronald Weaver was the head of the Sherland Volunteer Fire Department for 32 years in those years. The Shirland Board of Education and Illinois received the Lifelong Service Award on Wednesday night. Michael Weaver accepted the award on behalf of his grandfather. The chief was unable to attend the ceremony because he was fighting stage 4 lung cancer. "Honestly, I can say he's very grateful. He said," Why am I getting this? "Because it wasn't someone like him. He never looked for that satisfaction. He never looked for the piece of paper, the award. He was happy with what he was doing because he saw the difference it was making, "said Michael Weaver. Chief Weaver also served in the United States Air Force. Sherland Fire Chief was awarded the Lifelong Service Award after 45 years of work

One man was injured when flames and smoke consumed one home in Roseland Wednesday night, and spread to another. The Fire Department said the fire broke out just before 9 p.m. at 52 W. 110th St. The fire went on to spread to the next house to the east at 50 W. 110th St. Firefighters were seen on the roof and the ground, using saws to pry into the structure and get at the flames. A 36-year-old man was taken from the second floor of the house at 52 W. 110th St. to Roseland Community Hospital in serious, but stable condition.

Wednesday was a prime example of the importance of area first responders. First, Wednesday morning, Alton Police and Alton Fire Department were called to assist when a woman was discovered walking on the Clark Bridge. The Alton Police Department spoke with the woman for a period of time, which included a crisis negotiation but unfortunately, the woman jumped from the outer ledge of the bridge into the Mississippi River. In the process of the negotiation, the Alton Fire Boat positioned itself near where the woman would land if she did jump and was there shortly after she hit the water. The firefighters were able to rescue the woman and position her in the fireboat. Then the first responders quickly moved to shore to an awaiting ambulance for additional hospital treatment. This shows the importance of the fireboat and trained personnel for these types of river rescue situations.

Two of the biggest issues facing the Danville Fire Department right now involve its four-story training tower and the radio system that is used. Fire Chief Don McMasters told members of the city's Public Services Committee on Tuesday night that city engineers have determined that the top two floors of the 40-year-old training structure are not safe to use. McMasters says a firm will be called in to determine what the expense will be for the building to be fixed so that it can be used for trainings once again. One of the other projects the department is looking into is replacing its radio system. McMasters says that the current system, which was grant-funded is out-of-date and antiquated. He says that replacement parts have had to be found on eBay because they are no longer available. Officials will be meeting with the city to discuss what to do about the system.

VIDEO: An off-duty Rochester firefighter came to the rescue during a recent boat fire – using an unconventional means to help extinguish it. Rochester firefighters' union IAFF107 says firefighter Oscar Herrera stepped in to help fight the fire on May 20 at Mayer's Marina on Irondequoit Bay. Video captured him using his jet ski to help get the fire under control. "I saw it. Naturally I wanted to see what was going on so I went over and there were a couple of other jet skis basically staring at it and I thought, 'What can I do to help?' And I'd seen it on YouTube a couple of times so I wanted to try it myself," Herrera said. Herrera says he did some maneuvers to create a big wake to throw water on the flames. It was a first for him, but because it worked so well, it may not be his last mission. Herrera works at Engine 10 at Dewey and Ridgeway avenues.

Anyone having a heart attack at the nation's busiest airport should be prepared to wait. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's average response time in 2020, from the 911 center receiving a medical call to the first unit reporting on scene, was 11 minutes and 48 seconds. Even if a 911 operator at the airport knows CPR or has previous medical training, they are prohibited from giving life-saving instructions to 911 callers. "They're not trained to provide CPR instructions over the phone," Airport 911 Director Augustus Hudson said. Neighboring 911 centers and major airports across the nation, Like DFW in Dallas, have access to emergency medical dispatchers and provide pre-arrival instructions over the phone during medical calls. The Atlanta airport's 911 center does not.

Dozens of people are displaced and five buildings were damaged Wednesday when a seven-alarm fire spread through a Dorchester neighborhood. The fire was reported at about 11:15 a.m. on Fayston Street. From Sky 5, heavy, black smoke could be seen coming from at least three triple-deckers -- Nos. 86, 84 and 82 Fayston -- at the corner with Mascoma Street. The fire also caused minor damage to structures on Mascoma and Quincy streets. "I woke up to people saying, ‘Fire, fire fire,' and I looked out the back and there was this big flame of fire coming up to the second floor and I just ran out," one resident said. Commissioner Jack Dempsey said the heat was an issue battling the fire, and three firefighters and one civilian were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

VIDEO: Eleven-year-old year old Brady Young thrives on structure. From Cub Scout to Boy Scout, Brady said the principles he's learned have helped shape him. Always be, "trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, irreverent," recalls Brady who made sure to add, "I feel like I'm all of those. I do a pretty good job at that." But one other rule he lives by is what has his Port St. Lucie community talking. "Treat others as you want to be treated," said Brady. He took those words to heart at a young age, participating in various scout events, school initiatives, and backpack food drives for hungry students. Even his principal at Morningside Elementary, Kathleen Melrose, has taken notice and says she's not really surprised anymore.

Members of the Farmington Hills police and fire departments, along with officers from the Farmington Public Safety Department, received cardiac health screening tests as part of the Hearts for Heroes program back in December. Created by Dr. Justin Trivax and Dr. Herman Kado, Farmington Hills interventional cardiologists, the Hearts for Heroes program grew from an idea that originated with Trivax's high school daughters, Tessa and Sienna. The girls learned about a local police officer who suffered a fatal heart attack while on duty, and they asked their dad to help. The duo created the Hearts for Heroes program and reached out to several local police and fire departments. A total of 57 police officers and firefighters received coronary artery calcium scoring tests.
