Woman dies in Alton house fire VIDEO: A woman died in an Alton, Illinois house fire Thursday morning. The fire broke out at approximately 5:50 a.m. at a home located in the 1600 block of Nolte Place. When crews arrived at the scene they were not aware that a woman was still inside the home. Alton Fire Chief Jesse Jemison said the fire started in the basement of the home and then spread upstairs. A woman in her 60s was found deceased in a bedroom after the fire was put out. Jemison believes it is the woman who lived alone in this home. The state fire marshall has been called in to help with the investigation. Jemison said there is nothing suspicious about the blaze. A dog also died in this fire. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS Rockford Police and Fire chiefs discuss plans to improve city Rockford's new police and fire chiefs sit down with the public to address concerns and how both departments plan to improve the city. The informal question and answer session addressed several issues. For the fire department, Chief Michele Pankow wants to educate the public on the fire department doing more than just putting out fires. This also includes serving as the Emergency Services Disaster Agency for the city, Police Chief Carla Redd emphasized the issue of domestic violence. She says the department works with ministries to help as a referral source mainly for younger people. Afterward, guests were able to speak with them individually. Redd says, "Picking up a gun doesn't make you a man. You know, you have to know when to walk away from things and be at that point where you can engage and have a conversation and it doesn't necessarily lead to a feud or a fight." WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Champaign: New faces to fire and police departments "I'm full of excitement, just very happy to be here," Darrin Williams, new firefighter, said. "It's a dream come true." New faces will be joining various departments in one Central Illinois community. Three new fire fighters were welcomed during tonight's Champaign City council meeting and a new police officer was also sworn into office. The Champaign Fire Department has several applicants on their waiting list, while the Champaign Police Department is noticing fewer employees. "Very excited, just happy to be here and I'm thankful Champaign gave me an opportunity," Williams said. New firefighters and police officers lined up to be sworn in to their departments. "I know I have a lot still ahead of me that I'm really excited to get to, but I'm just lucky I got to this point so far," Trace Conover, firefighter, said. WCIA-TV CBS 3 CHAMPAIGN Some Springfield firetrucks can't fit under old railroad bridges Some of the Springfield Fire Department's ladder trucks can't fit under old railroad bridges. Now, the fire department is requesting new technology to help navigate around those areas. The trucks are too tall to make it through the underpasses, meaning firefighters have to take a different route or even send another firehouse to handle the emergencies, which could affect response times. "There's three underpasses in town that our trucks can't make it under," said Chief Brandon Blough. The underpasses are along East Dodge Street between Third and Fourth Street, where the train tracks intersect Hazel Dell Road, and on Cockrell Lane near Mathers Road. Fire crews in West Virginia respond to U-Haul storage facility fire VIDEO/PHOTOS: Crews responded to a fire at the U-haul Storage and Moving Facility on Ragland Road November 17, 2021. The cause of the fire is still undetermined. Fire Prevention Bureau Captain Ernest Parsons confirmed there was no one in the building when the fire started and there are no injuries. When it came to fighting the fire, Parsons said fire crews were dealing with high winds that created some challenges. "High wings is always a problem because it misdirects your hose streams so it can affect reach and the angle that you are flowing so it can be a challenge," Parsons said. Parsons said an investigation into the cause of the fire will happen in the next few days. WVNS-TV CBS/FOX 9 LEWISBURG Texas fire rescue installs new driver alert system, encourages public participation After a successful trial period, Lubbock Fire Rescue is installing more devices on its trucks that will alert nearby drivers of their presence on the scene of an incident or while on their way to it. The goal is to get drivers to focus on what's ahead for their safety and the safety of first responders. "After the accident on January 11, we're very proactive in every avenue possible on how can we increase the safety for our personnel, as well as just the citizens out there," Captain Phillip Grandon said. "A vehicle accident, especially on a high-speed road, is hazardous to everyone involved." LFR has currently installed HAAS Alert transponders on 1/3 of its fleet and anticipates all necessary apparatus to have the technology in about a month. When the emergency lights are activated on those vehicles, members of the public who use the Waze app will be notified of those trucks. KCBD-TV NBC 11 LUBBOCK Drug overdose deaths top 100,000 annually for the first time, driven by fentanyl, CDC data show America's drug epidemic is the deadliest it has ever been, new federal data suggests. More than 100,000 people died of drug overdoses in the United States during the 12-month period ending April 2021, according to provisional data published Wednesday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That's a new record high, with overdose deaths jumping 28.5% from the same period a year earlier. Opioids continue to be the driving cause of drug overdose deaths. Synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl, caused nearly two-thirds (64%) of all drug overdose deaths in the 12-month period ending April 2021, up 49% from the year before, the CDC's 's National Center for Health Statistics found. The Covid-19 pandemic and the rise in use of fentanyl have both been key contributors to the rising overdose death toll, experts say. The latest provisional data on drug overdose deaths captures those occurring in May 2020 through April 2021. KTVK-TV 3 & KPHO-TV CBS 5 PHOENIX (AZFAMILY.COM) Washington DC Sees Uptick in Fire Calls to Encampments Impacting Homeless People VIDEO: The nation's capital is suffering a surge in the number of fires and fire department responses to encampments for people experiencing homelessness. A News4 I-Team investigation revealed fire department calls more than doubled at encampments already this year. The problem is posing a risk to the safety and health of people living in encampments and in nearby neighborhoods. "I've seen several tents on fire, burned up," said Kory Walker, who has been living at an encampment on O Street NW for multiple years. The fires are often accidentally ignited by makeshift heating equipment, including grills, space heaters and cooking equipment, said Walker. Others, he said, are deliberately set during disputes between people living in encampments. Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Rachelle Nigro said the encampment near New Jersey Avenue and O Street NW had several large fires in recent months. WRC-TV NBC 4 WASHINGTON, D.C. Metro Atlanta firefighters get rare opportunity learn about train derailments, spills VIDEO: Many firefighters will go their whole careers without seeing a train crash, derailment, or train hazard spill. But it's the one time it does happen, and being prepared for it, that can mean the difference between life and death. "You can actually YouTube a video of a tank car imploding," said a Norfolk Southern Railway instructor. "It's a rail car that's being off loaded out of a facility, wasn't vented appropriately, once it got enough liquid out and there was more vapor space in that car. That vacuum finally overcame the structural integrity of that car and it sucks it in like a coke can." Many thousands of tons of chemicals and fuels are transported on Atlanta railways. Firefighters got a rare chance to learn about the carriage systems that transport these hazardous materials. WGCL-TV CBS 46 ATLANTA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
