A local fire department will soon have a change of leadership. The Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department announced Wednesday that Patrick Trollop will become the department's next chief, beginning on Jan. 1. Trollop has served in the department for 10 years, currently serving as a Battalion Chief. In his career, he has served as a paramedic for a private ambulance service in the Rockford area and in the United States Marine Corps as an Infantry Squad Leader. Current Fire Chief Don Shoevlin announced earlier this year that he was retiring at the end of this year, triggering a search by the HRFD Board. The board says Trollop has "clearly demonstrated he has the necessary leadership style, personality and vision for the future that would be a great fit for our community."

The Springfield Fire Department responded to a structure fire around the 1400 block of Reservoir, Tuesday evening. According to fire crews upon arrival the one story wooden structure had heavy fire coming from the attic. Crews say two adults and six children were home at the time of the fire and have all been displaced as a result of the incident. No injuries have been reported. Fire fighters managed to contain the fire to the attic, though the rest of the house suffered from water and smoke damage. The fire is currently under investigation.

Unity Point Proctor remains open, after an eventful Thursday morning. According to a press release from Peoria Battalion Chief Steve Rada, there are no injuries after crews were called down to 5409 N. Proctor around 5 a.m. A kitchen fire is believed to be part of the reason why thick smoke could be found on the first-floor hallway; however, most of the fire was reportedly out by the time emergency crews arrives. But the fire was not the main concern. Rada explains, smoke traveled from the second all the way up to the fourth floors. This smoke meant that more resources had to respond to help patients and staff shelter in place. Crews also had to help ventilate the building to get rid of the smoke, which included the use large fans and contacting the contacting the building engineer.

To promote fire safety, the Downers Grove Fire Department took residents behind the scenes during its annual event, ‘Night at the Firehouse.' The event – held during National Fire Prevention Week – drew hundreds of people to Fire Station 5 on Wednesday night. "It's a really fun event, we've come many, many times, and every time we get to see something new about our firefighters and our fire department. It's a great, great place to live," said Jillian Mikrut, who lives in Downers Grove. Families had the opportunity to tour an ambulance, sit in the driver's seat of a fire engine, and slide down the fire pole – among other hands-on activities.

Smoke was seen billowing out of a Jacksonville Fire Department vehicle Wednesday morning. Department officials say it happened in the 1500 block of South Main Street while crews were out running an errand. We're told the smoke was due to a mechanical issue and no one was injured. The fire department vehicle was towed back to the station where a mechanic will investigate the cause. Jacksonville Fire chief Doug Sills told WLDS that firefighters were delivering fire prevention materials to the schools Wednesday morning for fire prevention month when the Jacksonville EMS rescue truck suffered a runaway engine.

Firefighters battled a large fire at a Sudbury, Massachusetts, greenhouse on Wednesday afternoon. Sudbury police said the structure fire was at Cavicchio Greenhouses on Codjer Lane. It was first reported about 2:40 p.m. Aerial video showed what appeared to be a greenhouse destroyed by fire. Heavy black smoke was pouring from the structure. The structure was a total loss, Sudbury Fire Chief John Whalen said, but other ones were saved. "This particular complex has a lack of water, we've had fires here previously," he told reporters, adding that it takes some time to establish the necessary water supply to fight the flames. Police asked residents in the area to close their windows to keep smoke out of their homes. Any businesses using Cavicchio Greenhouses were also asked to avoid the area. Motorists were also being asked to stay away.

A new local hip-hop group just dropped its debut single, and it is straight fire. Tasked with creating an instructional video to show in schools for Fire Prevention Week, Milledgeville Fire Rescue went off the beaten path and recorded an original song along with a music video to educate kids about fire safety. "Don't Wait (Pre-Plan Your Escape)" went live on YouTube Monday and fits right in with the National Fire Protection Association's message for 2022 Fire Prevention Week, "Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape." The slogan encourages parents to create an exit plan in case a fire happens in their homes and share that plan with their children so they know what to do. The local firefighters took that message and turned it into a catchy hook along with a few verses.

There's a new face at Rural Metro Fire, Knox County. A young firefighter who is making a difference with his language skills. "Personally, I've always been a giver, ever since I was a little kid. I've always wanted to help people," firefighter Daniel Guerrero said. Guerrero is just over two months out of Academy Training, but already he's making a difference through his English-Spanish interpretation skills. "Luckily I was on the call, because no one knew how to speak Spanish," says Guerrero. "So, I'm lucky I ran the call." The 19-year-old California native recently accompanied his fellow Station No. 34 brothers to a call where the victims spoke no English. Only Spanish. "They were both Spanish speakers and you could tell they were panicking because no one knew English at the scene and they really didn't know how to translate," Guerrero tells Six News.

All 142 Milwaukee firefighters who have died serving the city since 1860 were honored Wednesday, Oct. 12 during the annual "Fallen Firefighter Memorial Program." Everyone knows that a firefighter's job is dangerous. It's their duty to run toward the flames, but Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski said it's what happens after they leave that can be the most deadly. From those who died in the 1800s to the most recent, all 142 members of the Milwaukee Fire Department that have given their life had their names read Wednesday. "We still have to remember because they did still make the ultimate sacrifice so that somebody else might live," said Chief Lipski. "What we do is risk. It is risk." Over the decades, Chief Lipski said research has shown the biggest risk may not be the flames but the things they breathe in.

PHOTOS: When Zionsville Fire Department firefighter Brett Havlin found an abandoned 1964 Zionsville firetruck in Sandwich, Ill., he knew something had to be done to bring it home. Havlin, along with fellow firefighters Kendrick Davis and Bobby Smith pooled their money to purchase the truck and bring it back to Zionsville, but the vehicle was going to need some work. This past spring, Boone County Professional Firefighters Association Local 5195 voted to purchase the truck from the men, raise funds to restore it and hopefully use it to bring the community together. "A stipulation of the sale was that the truck would stay with future firefighters in Zionsville and the Boone County Local was able to do that for us," Smith said. "We want the Zionsville Fire Department firefighters and part-time firefighters to help restore it to create a bonding experience for our firefighters of the past and present."
