| Stateline fire stations buy new fire trucks with state loans Several fire departments across the Stateline are riding in style after receiving a loan to purchase new trucks. "The program is a god sent for all of us," said Chief Joel Hallstrom, North Park Fire. "Without programs like this with low-interest loans there would be a lot of fire departments that would be making fire trucks last a lot longer than its probably safe," said Chief David Sawlsville, Rochelle Fire Department. Fire chiefs across the Rockford region feel grateful to be recipients of the Fire Truck Revolving Loan. "It's not uncommon to have a fire truck worth a $500,000. So you have to options, you can save for that or go for loans," Sawlsville said. These low to no interest loans allows departments to purchase emergency vehicles that they wouldn't be able to afford otherwise. WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Illinois American Water distributes grant to Elgin Fire Department The Elgin Fire Department will be purchasing personal protective equipment of one harness and 24 lock carabiners for their regionalized technical rescue team thanks to a grant from Illinois American Water. The Illinois American Water Firefighter Grant Program provides financial assistance to fire and emergency organizations serving communities in its service areas. The program awards grants to provide personal protective gear, communications equipment, firefighting tools, water handling equipment, training materials and classroom programs. The grant winners were announced in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 6-12,, to raise awareness about the importance of fire prevention and emergency planning. ILLINOIS DAILY HERALD Apartment fire displaces Peoria family Peoria firefighters were called out just before 9 a.m. Monday to the 3400 block of W Sunburst Lane on report of an apartment fire. Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the roof of the building, and from the ceiling of a bathroom on the third floor. Firefighters were able to access the attic, and extinguished the fire in a matter of minutes. A thorough search of the building found no one was inside at the time of the fire. The Red Cross was dispatched to provide temporary lodging for an adult and two kids. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported. WMBD-AM 1470 Wheaton firefighters extinguish residential blaze Wheaton firefighters Dec. 8 extinguished in moments a structure fire in the 100 block of Christina Circle. Firefighters were called at about 8 p.m. to a fire inside a single-family residence. The blaze was brought under control within minutes. The residence was unoccupied at the time of the fire. No one was injured, according to a Wheaton Fire Department news release. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and damage estimates are unavailable. | Indiana council bucks mayor, votes to return to former schedule for firefighters The City Council supported city firefighters Monday night and voted to roll back unpopular work shift changes the mayor imposed last weekend. Council members passed — by an 8-1 vote on first reading — an ordinance that would return firefighters to a work schedule of 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off. Councilwoman Gilda Orange cast the lone dissenting vote. More than 100 fire union members of East Chicago and surrounding communities packed the meeting and applauded the council's action. Mayor Anthony Copeland is expected to veto the measure if council members pass it on second and final reading. They next meet Dec. 23. Copeland didn't make an appearance Monday, but Fire Chief Anthony Serna did to warn council members against taking the union's part in this labor dispute. "It is not a benefit to anyone," Serna said. NORTHWEST TIMES Sculpture for Fallen Massachusetts Firefighter Unveiled on One Year Anniversary The city's third memorial sculpture for a firefighter who died in the line of duty was unveiled Monday evening at the Webster Square Fire Station. Dignitaries, fellow firefighters and family members stood for an hour in the cold rain to honor Firefighter Christopher J. Roy of Shrewsbury, 36, who died a year ago, after he was pulled from a burning apartment at 7 Lowell St. The bronze sculpture depicts folded turnout gear topped by a helmet for Ladder 4, next to an ax with its blade downward, the word, "Perseverance" engraved on the handle. After its unveiling, the memorial will be put away over the winter and then permanently sited at the station after landscaping can be done in the spring. Support for the sculpture and perpetual care and maintenance of the city's other firefighter memorials was provided through a $20,000 donation from the Kraft Family Foundation to the Greater Worcester Community Foundation, to establish the Worcester Fire Department Memorials Care Fund. WORCESTER TELEGRAM Three Ohio Firefighters Terminated for Hazing Three firefighters were terminated Monday after an investigation found they verbally and physically abused a part-time firefighter. The allegations came to light in September; today the Orange Township trustees voted to accept the recommendations of investigators who said a firefighter, a lieutenant, and a captain should lose their jobs. Terminated today were: Brad Belville, a firefighter/paramedic; Lt. David Martin; and Capt. John Hodges. The investigation found the abuse happened at Orange Township Fire Station 361 on Gooding Blvd. The part-time firefighter, who we are not naming, requested a transfer from Station 361, which led to the investigation. Interviews with firefighters found "hazing and bullying was occurring against (the firefighter) by other firefighters," according to investigation reports. WSYX-TV ABC 6 Grandmother, grandson, dog rescued after Maryland firefighters sent to wrong address, wrong city On Monday Montgomery County Police released new information on what led a 911 dispatcher to send firefighters to the wrong house in the wrong city during a fire. The trouble happened on Friday night when a fire began at 2005 Prichard Road in Wheaton. Police say the 911 dispatcher misunderstood the person who called and sent firefighters to 2005 Piccard Drive in Rockville – 10 miles away from the actual fire. Per a police timeline released Monday, the firefighters were sent at 10:21 p.m. At 10:25, they arrived at the Rockville home only to discover there was no fire. The 911 operator then asked the caller to repeat the address, realized it was actually the Wheaton home, and dispatched firefighters there at 10:27. Police say the firefighters arrived four minutes later. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue says after arriving they rescued a grandmother and her adult grandson. WJLA-TV ABC 7 Cal Fire engineer used own experiences to get fellow first responders counseling Richard Wilson was sitting in a hotel hot tub with his two young sons when he heard the scream. It was the kind of scream that any parent knows, he said, and he leapt into action. Leaving his kids with his wife, he ran to the edge of the Huntington Beach pool where a mother had just spotted her 4-year-old son, Hudson, motionless on the bottom. The mother jumped in and brought her son up to the surface. Clearly panicked and distraught, she handed him to Wilson. "When she gave him to me, he was blue in the face, had no pulse and was limp as can be," said Wilson. "His pupils were unresponsive. Mentally, I'm thinking that blue is better than gray, but there were no real signs of life." Immediately, Wilson's training kicked in and he began CPR. He avoided breaths and only performed chest compressions due to the likelihood of water in Hudson's lungs.
