Pekin firefighters now offer paramedic care As of December 1st the Pekin Fire Department has advanced from Intermediate Life Support to Advanced Life Support to deliver paramedic care to those in crisis. For the past 20 years the department has stated at the intermediate level. Now members of the fire department will have access for additional medications and make sure people are stabilized prior to transport. Studies show stabilization prior to transport gives patient better outcomes. "Advanced life support care is the care that is allowed to be performed by a paramedic. So we're upgrading from the intermediate service level to the advanced level," says firefighter Steve Amstutz. Initially the fire department went to Mayor Mark Luft with their plan and he agreed to advocate to the Pekin city council. He says he was glad to support the local fire department with raising the bar for safety measures. HEART OF ILLINOIS ABC Mount Prospect Fire Department receives grant for new equipment The Mount Prospect Fire Department will be purchasing 12 multi-loop rescue straps thanks to a grant from Illinois American Water (IAW). The IAW 2021 Firefighter Grant Program provides financial assistance to fire and emergency organizations serving communities in its service areas. This year, more than $92,000 will be shared by over 90 Illinois fire departments. Since 2010, more than 770 grants totaling more than $760,000 have been awarded to Illinois fire and emergency organizations in the company's service area. "We know the importance and value water has in protecting homes and businesses. We also understand the need to support our local heroes. This program allows us to continue to provide support to the local departments," said Justin Ladner, Illinois American Water president. THE DAILY HERALD ‘I just want to help the town out': Plainfield firefighter Ed Morann retires after serving more than 55 years For more than five decades, Ed Morann has served as a member of the Plainfield Fire Department, one of many ways the former police chief and highway superintendent has served his community. That era came to an end earlier this month when he turned in his turnout gear — at age 80. "I told them before, if I turn 80 I was going to do it," said Morann, who retired as a captain. Asked why he spent so long as a firefighter, Morann had a simple answer. "I just want to help the town out," Morann said. "Up here we don't have many people." Morann first started fighting fires when he was 15 — when firefighting was handled by the Plainfield Men's Club. He said the first time he went to a fire, he was attending Smith Vocational and he was ordered out of school to fight a forest fire in Plainfield. "We fought that for a week," Morann said. DAILY HAMPSHIRE GAZETTE Farmer in Christian County rescued from grain bin with help from Springfield firefighters A farmer who had fallen in a grain bin in rural Mt. Auburn Monday morning was rescued after several hours. Springfield Fire Department crews were called in to assist with the rescue, Chief Brandon Blough said. Christian County Sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp said the rescue happened at a grain bin at 1240 East Road. The farmer was conscious and talking to sheriff's deputies after the rescue, Kettelkamp said. The farmer was being transported to HSHS St. John's Hospital by helicopter. The initial 911 came in at 9:15, Kettelkamp said. SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL-REGISTER Four people displaced after Bloomington apartment fire One woman and three children have been displaced after a fire that the Bloomington Fire Department is calling accidental. The department responded at around 11:26 a.m. to a structure fire on Holton Drive -- called in by a neighbor who reported the smell and presence smoke, according to a post on Facebook. Crews forced entry into the unit after initially arriving and seeing nothing from the street. The fire was extinguished with a 1 3/4? hand line. No injuries were reported and the fire is still under investigation. The Red Cross is helping the four displaced. HEART OF ILLINOIS ABC Niles Firefighters Extinguish SUV Fire Before Spreading To Adjacent Homes Niles firefighters made quick work extinguishing an SUV that caught fire on a driveway between two homes in the 8500 block of Ozark Avenue Sunday afternoon. Firefighters were dispatched at 3:27 p.m. to 8557 Ozark Ave., arriving at 3:31 p.m. to find a Buick Encore engulfed. Fire Chief Marty Feld said the vehicle was between two homes, neither of which was occupied when firefighters arrived. Firefighters forced entry to one of the homes to ensure heat from the burning vehicle did not spread into the adjacent home. Feld said the fire was brought under control quickly after firefighters' arrival and was completely extinguished within 10 to 15 minutes. He said there were no injuries and no damage to either home, but added that even one ember getting through a crack in the brick face of either home could have caused a fire. Fire does major damage to historic Iowa building; award-winning grocery store engulfed in flames VIDEO/ PHOTOS: Firefighters are still monitoring the scene where a large fire broke out in Malvern on Monday evening. The question now is what the status is of a few of the other buildings in the area. Crews from roughly a dozen agencies have helped at the scene and continue to water down hot spots from the fire. Tom Mulholland, the owner of Mulholland Grocery which was damaged in the fire, said the following on Facebook Tuesday morning: "With the efforts of the Malvern Fire Department and those from over a dozen other communities doing everything possible to contain the fire last night, the water supply for the community was exhausted and it has caused a boil order for the community. I apologize for the inconvenience it will cause for hundreds of people. I have reached out to people at my warehouse and they are working on getting a water delivery to the community as soon as they can. I wish I could do more to help." KMTV CBS 3 OMAHA Alabama city invests $2 million in new fire engine and ladder truck VIDEO: Nothing shines like a new fire truck -- except maybe two new fire trucks. With record growth and tourism, the city of Gulf Shores is investing in the safety of its residents and visitors. The new Pierce engine and ladder truck are now in service. They came with a significant price tag of $2 million dollars, an investment the city felt it was time to make. "With the amount of vacationers we had in town this past summer, we don't look for that to decrease in the future so it really drives how quickly and how safely we get to scene, again, for the wellbeing of our firefighters and the wellbeing of our residents," said Gulf Shores Fire Rescue Chief of Staff Melvin Shepard. WALA-TV FOX 10 MOBILE Report says New Jersey public pensions face fiscal peril as new police and fire retirees grow New Jersey's pension system for public employees costs more than most other states while offering "generous" benefits that are increasingly going toward more retirees than active employees, according to a new report. One retirement fund, for police and firefighters, had more people collecting pension benefits in 2019 than current workers, and two others were on a similar trajectory — meaning those funds are less able to handle investments risks, the analysis by the fiscally conservative think tank Garden State Initiative found. All this is despite years of increasing payments by the state that reached a record of nearly $7 billion this year. Without making policy changes for tens of thousands of public employees, New Jersey's political leaders will likely face difficult choices on how to use taxpayer dollars to stabilize the pension funds, the group said. NORTHJERSEY.COM - METERED SITE Ohio fire chief turns to social media to share weekly safety messages Fire Chief Larry Walters spoke to City Council about a new initiative the department is currently working on to help promote safety through social media. "We're always looking for ways to get safety messages out regarding fires, hazards, that sort of thing," Walters said. "Social media has been a good way to do that. Tyler Thompson, one of our younger firemen, manages that (Facebook) site for us. He's come up with a new initiative where he's posting ‘Fire Safety Fridays,'" Walters said at Monday's council meeting (Dec. 13). "Every Friday, there will be a new fire safety message up there." CLEVELAND.COM New York county launches program to assist emergency responders A new Oneida County program will better prepare first responders for emergency situations involving people with special needs. The Assistance for Special, Cognitive, Emotional Needs and Disabilities (ASCEND) program will allow people to voluntarily register their disability or condition with the county so emergency workers will be notified of the circumstances during an emergency call. "Times of crisis can be stressful for all parties involved, and this type of situation can be unnecessarily elevated when first responders are unaware of special needs and conditions," Picente said. "The ASCEND program will help to ensure that our residents who have such needs are identified immediately and provided the additional support and resources they require. Awareness and understanding are the keys to remedying these issues in the safest manner possible." WKTV NBC/CBS/CW+2 UTICA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
