A 90-year-old man was found dead in a fire Monday afternoon in the Sauganash neighborhood on the Northwest Side. Firefighters were called about 2 p.m. to a ranch home in the 5600 block of North Kerbs Avenue, according to the Chicago Fire Department. A "relatively small" fire was extinguished right away, and crews found the man dead inside the house, department spokesman Larry Langford said. Someone who called in the fire said someone was trapped in the home, he said. The man was identified as Edwin Glad, the Cook County medical examiner's office said. An elderly female escaped the home unharmed, Langford said.

The truck's cab caught fire about 5:30 a.m. in the right lane of Interstate 94, according to the Chicago Fire Department. The fire then spread to the tires, which were "very hard" to put out, department spokesman Larry Langford said. The blaze was extinguished within an hour and there were no reported injuries. The far left lane of inbound I-94 remained open to traffic, according to Illinois State Police.  

A woman who was found dead along with her husband Sunday after a fire at a home in Inverness died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to an autopsy. The woman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to her head, the Cook County medical examiner's office said. Her death was ruled a suicide. An autopsy to determine the cause and manner of her husband's death was pending, the medical examiner's office said. A neighbor called 911 shortly before 5 p.m. after noticing smoke coming from the rear of a split-level home, according to Palatine Rural Fire Protection District Chief Rich May. Firefighters arrived in minutes and found heavy smoke and fire at 219 Bradwell Road, May said. Crews entered the home and found the couple, one of whom was in the kitchen, May said. The couple, in their 80s, were pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner's office hasn't released their names.  

Two Buffalo Grove residents were safely evacuated from their house after a fire broke out there Monday afternoon, authorities said. The fire at the two-story home in the 600 block of Patton Drive was reported to the Buffalo Grove Fire Department at noon, with firefighters arriving at the scene sighting smoke and flames coming through the attic roof at the rear of the home, authorities said. There were no injuries, and the fire was extinguished by around 12:30 p.m., authorities said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.  

VIDEO: Firefighters protected nearby buildings from flames that tore through an auto parts storage center early Tuesday in Cypress Park. Over 100 firefighters were battling the fire in the community north of downtown Los Angeles. Crews responded to the 1000 block of N. San Fernando Road at about 4 a.m. and reported fire coming out of the roof of the one-story building with dense interior storage, said Brian Humphrey with the Los Angeles Fire Department. The area is blocked off. No injuries have been reported. Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said firefighters were dealing with dense storage conditions within the building. Shortly after 6 a.m., firefighters reported that the fire was contained within the structure, but was not yet fully extinguished, Humphrey said. San Fernando Road was closed in the area as a precaution.  

VIDEO: Dramatic video shows first responders rescue two people from a vehicle submerged into Long Island Sound during the nor'easter on Monday afternoon. Two people were in the pickup truck when it went 35 feet out into the water. Only the bed of the truck was sticking out. A woman in the truck got out through the rear window and was able to get onto the bed of the truck and out of the water, but a man in the truck was stuck. Firefighters stretched their tower ladder to its full capacity in order to reach the vehicle. Officials said as soon as a firefighter was able to grab the man through the window, the truck went fully under water. The man was taken to the hospital conscious but had some lacerations. The woman declined medical care at the scene. Stamford Fire Department Captain Palmer said he was especially proud of his team.  

The Goodyear Fire Department is one of the first fire departments in the country to take a major step toward preventing firefighters from getting cancer from the important work they do. Goodyear opened up Station 186 near Willis and Rainbow Valley roads in early January. The station is one of three that will be built with special air partitioning systems to keep carcinogens away from firefighters in between calls. More and more building materials and household items are made with plastic, and when plastic burns, the smoke it puts off can contain cancer-causing substances that are then inhaled by firefighters. The CDC reports that firefighters have an increased risk of cancer diagnosis and death as a result of smoke inhalation. There isn't much firefighters can do about inhaling smoke when they are putting out a fire, but in the living quarters of a station, there is an opportunity to keep firefighters away from fumes as they eat, sleep and wait for the next call.  

With the Alabama state legislative session starting on Feb. 2, a bill has already been proposed to give more help towards first responders suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder. When people hear the term PTSD, most do not think about firefighters, police officers, or other safety staff. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 30 percent of first responders are expected to develop some type of behavioral condition. "You know the fire service as a whole, and even here in the Dothan Fire Department, responds to a lot of traumatic situations," Dothan Fire Deputy Chief Chris Etheredge said. "Whether that be a medical response or a fire response or a car wreck. Those are very traumatic things that can happen and you have to put together that with what's going on in your life and how that affects each person individually."
