Peoria Fire Department responds to nearly 20,500 calls in 2021, most since 2018 In 2021, the Peoria Fire Department responded to just less than 20,500 calls, marking one of the busiest years ever for the department. Peoria Fire Chief Jim Bachman said it's not uncommon to see an increase in calls on a year-to-year basis. But after a reduction in runs in 2020 attributed to COVID-19, the fire department saw calls back on the upswing just a year later. "We're ahead of every other year except for 2018," Chief Bachman said. In 2021, Bachman said not only did the number of fire calls rise in Peoria but other emergencies as well. "Shootings were up, [and] we had a significant increase in motor vehicle accidents that we responded to," Bachman said. Ryan Brady, president of Peoria Firefighters Local 50, said the increased workload is felt by first responders. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Garage Fire Damages Two Single-Family Homes In Buffalo Grove Buffalo Grove fire officials are investigating a fire deemed accidental in nature that left one house uninhabitable on New Year's Day and saw a cat rescued by firefighters. According to fire officials, at 1:41 a.m. Jan. 1, firefighters were dispatched to 405 Glendale Rd. for a reported house fire. Fire units arrived on the scene at 1:47 a.m. and saw heavy flames coming from the attached garage. Firefighters were met by a resident of the home who advised them that all of the home's occupants had been safely evacuated. Firefighters entered, located the fire, which had spread from the garage into the home, and extinguished it within 30 minutes of arriving on the scene. The house sustained smoke and water damage and is currently uninhabitable. JOURNAL & TOPICS NEWSPAPERS ONLINE Snow Plow Truck Becomes Fully Engulfed In Flames In Woodstock Firefighters extinguished a fully engulfed snow plow truck fire on Route 14 in Woodstock during the snowfall Saturday evening, fire officials said. The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded around 7:58 p.m. Saturday to the area of Route 14 between Kishwaukee Valley Road and South Street. Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Spokesman Alex Vucha said crews received a report of a vehicle fire. Firefighters arrived and found a fully involved pickup truck fire in the southbound lanes of Route 14. The pickup truck, which had a snowplow attached to the front, was not a municipal vehicle, Vucha said. Firefighters quickly pulled a hose line and extinguished the fire within minutes. CRYSTAL LAKE PATCH Fire Causes $20K In Damage To Home In Naperville Fire officials say smoking materials that were not properly disposed of are to blame for a blaze that caused around $20,000 in damages to a home in Naperville early New Year's Day. The fire, which broke out in the 2200 block of Salisbury Drive around 12:30 a.m., resulted in minor injuries to one person. When firefighters got to the scene, they found smoke coming from the two-story home's attached garage. They were able to keep the fire contained to the garage and remained onsite after extinguishing the blaze to target remaining hot spots and perform smoke removal. One person was treated on the scene for a minor injury. The residents were able to return to their home after the fire. NAPERVILLE PATCH Peoria Fire Department releases results of annual Keep the Wreath Red campaign The Peoria Fire Department has released the results of the annual "Keep the Wreath Red" campaign. The month-long December tradition is designed to promote fire safety during the holidays. Despite the number of structure fires and injuries being down, Peoria Division Chief of Fire Prevention, Nate Rice, said there are still too many incidents. "Our goal is to keep those numbers down, and really the only way we can do that is to keep promoting safe practices in the homes, things like extension cords, and heating units," Rice said. Tent And Trailer Serve As Newest Fire Station in Texas City VIDEO: A half-dome tent and a portable trailer on an empty piece of property off I-30, make up the newest official fire station in Fort Worth. Approved, constructed, and outfitted in three months, the temporary station opened New Year's Day, providing protection to the rapidly growing communities on the far western edge of the city. For now there is room for just one engine to park in the tent. Living space for the 12 firefighters assigned to Station 43 is cramped. It's not limited though in emergency response. "As far as capability, this fire station is capable of doing what every other fire station in the city of Fort Worth is doing," said department spokesman Mike Drivdahl. Until now, fire response for the area has come from two stations up to six miles away, and at least a 10 minute drive. KTVT CBS 11 FORT WORTH Maryland county using fire trucks to transport low priority patients COVID-19 cases in Maryland continue to skyrocket and as of Monday, 2,746 people are hospitalized with the virus. Not only is it overwhelming hospitals, but it's impacting fire and EMS operations. "We've noticed an increase call volume in EMS, primarily patients who believe they are experiencing symptoms of COVID," said Shannon Stallings, chief of the Bowleys Quarters Volunteer Fire Department. Sometimes, ambulances are waiting at the ER with a patient for hours because there are no beds available. That entire time, they can't respond to other calls. To help free them up, as of New Years, Baltimore County is allowing non-life threatening patients to be transported by fire truck or other non-ambulance type of vehicle. WMAR-TV ABC 2 BALTIMORE Colorado coaches, firefighters build community via ladder trucks and takedowns For John Alley and Luke Barron, being firefighters and varsity wrestling coaches isn't simply a matter of balancing two jobs. It's more like a double-dip in intertwined vocations. Alley is an engineer for the Westminster Fire Department, while Barron is a firefighter for the Denver Fire Department. They've coached at Columbine High School together for six years, the past two as co-head coaches. The sum of both jobs requires early mornings and late nights, traded shifts at the station and aching muscles from drilling with the Rebels in the wrestling room. But the payoff — building community via fire trucks and takedowns — makes it all worthwhile. "On the job, most times we see people at their bad moments — they're going through their worst time right now, and that's why we're there," Barron explained. DENVER POST - METERED SITE The Firemen's Association of the State of New York is getting a new name In celebration of its 150th anniversary, The Firemen's Association of the State of New York is giving itself a new name. As of this month, the group will be known as The Firefighters' Association of the State of New York (FASNY). The organization's board voted unanimously to change its name at a December meeting. "We all felt it was time," FASNY President John Farrell said in a written statement. Using "firefighter" takes gender out of the association's name. "The volunteer fire service has evolved greatly from the late 19th century. While our original name was based on the fire service of 1872, our new name positions us for the 21st century." First Vice President, Edward Tase, echoed his comments. "We did not make this change lightly. We know and respect the great history of our association," he said. TIMES UNION First Case of ‘Flurona' Has Been Diagnosed in Israel: What You Need to Know Ever since the pandemic began, public health experts have warned about the possibility of getting COVID-19 and the flu at once. With flu cases jumping up across the country after a very mild season last year, doctors are warning that so-called "flurona" can happen—and Israel just had its first documented case, which may be the first in the world. Israeli health officials recently announced that the patient was an unvaccinated pregnant woman who had both the flu and COVID-19 (likely Omicron variant) at once, per the Times of Israel. The woman had mild symptoms and was released from the hospital on Thursday. Flu cases are steadily increasing across the U.S.—4,514 new cases were diagnosed the week of December 18, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)—and that raises the risk that flurona can happen here, says Thomas Russo, M.D., professor and chief of infectious disease at the University at Buffalo in New York.
