| 5 Fires, 1 Water Rescue: Aurora Fire Department Answers 200-Plus Calls July 4 Weekend The Fourth of July weekend was a busy one for the Aurora Fire Department. Officials reported that crews responded to 242 calls for service between July 3-7. Of all call types, six — including one water rescue and five structure fires — required additional alarms requesting more companies to the scene. The Independence Day holiday did not have a direct effect on call volume or call types, Fire Marshal Christopher Temes said in a news release. On July 4, crews responded to two structure fires within minutes of each other. At 10:09 p.m., a fire was reported in the 500 block of Grand Avenue on the city's west side. The blaze was contained to the exterior siding of a single-family house, according to the release. | VIDEO: Fire torches 45-foot vessel on San Francisco Bay; 2 boaters escape Two boaters and a dog managed to escape unharmed Monday afternoon when a fire destroyed the boat they were on in San Francisco Bay. The fire burned the 45-foot vessel off Westpoint Harbor in Redwood City at around 1 p.m. The San Francisco Fire Department said one of its rescue boats was at the scene extinguishing the fire. The department cited the U.S Coast Guard as saying the two occupants abandoned the boat, named Lucid Dream, once it caught fire and were rescued by a good Samaritan vessel. The owner of the boat, Vicki Topp of Big Sur, told KPIX that she, another person and a dog were rescued by the Coast Guard and Redwood City firefighters. Coast Guard Petty Officer Ryan Graves told KPIX the Bayliner sailing vessel was fully engulfed when a Coast Guard helicopter arrived and located the two boaters and the dog in the water. Abandoned water wells - there's a proper procedure for how they should be closed up, but officials say that isn't always happening. "They're all over and sometimes they're just covered up and kind of forgotten," said Oconee County Emergency Management Director Scott Krein. Experts believe there are more than 100,0000 water wells across the state. They don't know how many of them have been abandoned without being properly sealed. Krein's agency was called to a home on Park Avenue in Salem in November 2023. Dorothy Downey, 83, was helping her daughter pack up before a move. When they tried to move the dining room table, rotting floorboards gave way and Downey plunged into a dark, 50-foot hole.
