It’s a fact that firefighters need to be connected at all times to their crewmates. Communications is their lifeline. When cellular or radio networks go down, firefighters can feel safer knowing they can request portable cell sites to quickly re-establish terrestrial coverage during an event. Ryan Fields-Spack, a member of the FirstNet Response Operations Group, describes the need and benefits of deployable assets, available to all FirstNet customers at no charge. read more |

Chief Joe Henning wraps up tenure with Quincy Fire Department Quincy Fire Chief Joe Henning attended his final City Council meeting Monday night. Chief Henning has been with the Quincy Fire Department for almost 28 years and was promoted to chief in 2009. Henning is retiring from the role to take on a full-time teaching position at Western Illinois University. He said it's bitter-sweet to be retiring but he's excited for his next venture to educate future firefighters in the classroom. "Really develop a lot of lifelong friends in a commitment to the citizens we serve here in Quincy, and I'm going to miss that. While I'm not going to be too far away a lot of the work I'm going to do is ducktail right back into what we do here in Quincy," Henning said. "So, I'll be able to keep my roots here and hopefully be able to keep supporting the department." WGEM-TV NBC 10 QUINCY Chicago firefighter Chris King will debut in Funny Car at Mile-High Nationals Chicago firefighter Chris King will make his professional debut July 16-18 at the Dodge//SRT Mile-High NHRA Nationals in Denver. King, who has experience in both Top Alcohol Funny Cars and Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars, will pilot a Toyota for Mark Howard's Papillion, Neb.-based Howard Motorsports Funny Car operation. "Not many people ever get the chance to drive a nitro Funny Car, let alone compete in one at the highest level of the sport, and I get chills and get all fired up just thinking about it," King said. "Tomorrow isn't guaranteed — especially in my line of work — and I'm 100% focused on making this happen while I can. Who knows? With some sponsor help and a little luck, maybe I can make a name for myself out here." NHRA Follow Up: Bernie Vahlkamp sworn in as Quincy fire chief Quincy Assistant Fire Chief Bernie Vahlkamp was sworn in as the city's newest fire chief during Monday's city council meeting. Vahlkamp's appointment concludes a five-month selection process that wrapped up on Friday when the Quincy Board of Fire and Police Commissioners selected him out of three finalists. Barry Cheyne of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners said Vahlkamp continues a long history of service to the city as his grandfather was a Quincy firefighter and his father served on the city council for 28 years. In his 24-year-history with the department, Cheyne said Vahlkamp has served in every capacity. QUINCY HERALD-WHIG Morris expected to change lithium battery rules after fire forced evacuations It has been nearly two weeks since a fire ripped through a building in Morris, forcing people from their homes. Now, officials are cracking down on lithium batteries. When the building caught fire, filling the east side of Morris with thick black smoke, inside were 100 tons of lithium batteries. The blaze caused evacuations for several days in the area. Drone video from earlier this month showed the insides of the Superior Battery business where the owner says he was storing batteries hoping to start a solar panel business. The fire raged on for more than a week with hotspots, until finally it was extinguished just a few days ago. There were no injuries and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has continued to monitor air quality, which has remained safe. But the fire chief says there could be flare-ups once again when the batteries are moved from their current location. Video shows moments leading up to tanker truck fire on I-75 in Michigan VIDEO: Police have released new footage showing the moment a tanker truck driver lost control and slammed into a median on Interstate 75 in Troy, causing an explosion. The incident happened at about 1:15 p.m. on Monday near Big Beaver Road. Authorities said a section of the freeway is expected to be closed through at least Tuesday morning's rush hour. Police said the 46-year-old driver, from St. Clair, suffered minor injuries. They said he was hauling 14,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel. Police said no other vehicles were involved and no other injuries were reported. WDIV-TV NBC 4 DETROIT Georgia police, firefighters injured in power line accident; firefighter has leg amputated Police and firefighters were injured Monday, one seriously, in an accident involving a downed power line, according to authorities. Around 4 p.m., following an intense thunderstorm, Valdosta's fire and police departments responded to a call of a power line down on the Madison Highway near Dampier Street, a statement from the city stated. The situation involved a power line which was hanging low, Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk said. As police and firefighters arrived on the scene to check the line, a vehicle drove through the section of the roadway where the line was down, the statement said. "It was a truck that came right through and caught the line, causing it to snap and whip around," Paulk said. Three firefighters and one officer received injuries on the scene and were taken to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment, the city's statement said. One of the firefighters had to have a leg amputated, the sheriff said. The conditions of the injured police and firefighters are unknown. NHRA San Francisco still can't decide what to do with its historic fire boxes PHOTOS: David Ebarle pulls a tiny lever on the familiar red apparatus in front of him, shaped like a Monopoly house made of iron. It emits a mechanical, grinding noise that drones over his voice — it's almost a static-like sound. We're standing inside the currently shuttered San Francisco Fire Department Museum, an unremarkable burgundy building adjoining Station 10 on Presidio Avenue. Inside, framed photographs of every city fire chief from the past 150 years loom overhead, and aging leather fire hats and badges line the shelves of glass cases lining the room. At the center of this niche hub for emergency services, tucked behind a mannequin leading three firehorses, is a defunct fire alarm call box that once stood at the intersection of Front and Pine streets, just steps away from Embarcadero Station. Ebarle — who is on the board of trustees for Guardians of the City, the organization that runs the museum — is showing me how it works. SF GATE Tennessee firefighter's workouts lifting people up on TikTok VIDEO: On most days, you can find the Chattanooga Fire Department's Lt. Michael Battle working out at the Sports Barn. On a typical day, he will bench press anywhere from 400 to 500 lbs. While he's been inspiring others in the gym for years, he's now reaching more people on the app TikTok. Videos of his workouts have gone viral. "I was actually working out and somebody recorded me," Battle said. "They put it out and it kind of gained momentum and it kind of took off from there." People started watching his workouts and feeling encouraged. "I never thought that me doing something that I love could affect people that much," Battle said. But he said it's about much more than the weight on the bar, it's about mental health. "It allows me to clear my mind and I feel better. I feel relieved once I leave here. I'm ready to tackle my day," Battle said. WRCB-TV NBC 3 CHATTANOOGA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
