After just a year on the job as Belleville's fire chief, J.P. Penet retired on Monday and his assistant was named the interim fire chief. Penet, who celebrated his wedding on June 18, said he wants to spend more time with his wife, Kimberly Yates, and their new family. "I am retiring from the best job in the world, that's for sure," Penet said. Penet's retirement took effect Monday, which was 28 years to the day since he was hired by the Belleville Fire Department on July 18, 1994. "I just got married, I'm blending two families and when those big life changes happen, it causes you to re-evaluate what's important in your life and as much as I love this job and as much as I appreciate what it's done for me over the course of 28 years, I excited that I've got a new chapter in my life started," Penet said. BELLEVILLE NEWS-DEMOCRAT VIDEOS: Firefighters are battling a massive extra-alarm fire at a store in Shorewood in Will County Tuesday morning. The fire broke out at around 4:30 a.m.. at the Tri-County Stockdale Company on Black Road. The farm supply store sells animal feed as well as yard care and fertilizer. Shorewood police have issued a shelter-in-place order for two miles north and northeast of the fire due to fumes from the fire. "Our biggest concern now is the air quality because this building does store fertilizer and pesticides, so we have started monitoring the air," Troy Fire Protection District Chief Andy Doyle. "We have put in a shelter in place for a two mile radius north and northeast of this location because of the toxic smoke." Chief Andy Doyle said the fire destroyed four buildings. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO 3 adults and a child have been displaced after an accidental attic fire Monday morning. Peoria Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Hughes says first responders were called to the 2800 block of West Susan Curve Court for a report of a structure fire. Crews had to do an extensive overhaul in the attic area to make sure all hot spots were out. A fire department investigator determined the fire to be accidental. No injuries have been reported at this time. The American Red Cross was called to help secure lodging. Damage is estimated to be $50,000. The call came in around 5:13 a.m. WHOI-TV ABC 19 PEORIA Crews were called out to a fire at the U.N.F.I food distribution facility Tuesday morning just after 2:00. The 2nd alarm fire at 2611 N. Lincoln Ave. had moderate smoke and fire visible near a rooftop chiller unit located near the center of the building. The facility operates 24/7. Employees were already evacuating when crews arrived. The ladder truck was used to get access to the roof from outside. The fire was contained to a 20' x 20' roof area around a chiller unit located above a mechanical and maintenance room. There was minimal smoke inside the structure. An interior building sprinkler head had also been activated. The fire was extinguished, and the incident brought under control within an hour with no injuries reported. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR VIDEO: 100 year old car-dealership-turned-fire station needs serious repairs and the fire department needs more space to hold equipment upgrades. Leaders say that will only happen in a new building, but Mt. Morris Fire Department Captain Mark Lewis say they need donations from residents to make it a reality... $2M to be exact. "Cause it's home. Every third day it's home," said Lewis. Moving the building away from the street means a safer area for firefighters. Lewis says the station is live-able but not functional for added services and quick responses. "Having a higher ceiling would let us load hose after calls in the winter time. The size of the vehicles have changed that they just don't fit in here anymore," said Lewis, "We're looking at several different sites and that's a big part of it is what's going to benefit the community the most." Mt. Morris Foundation Board President, Susan Druschel says not only do the firefighters need the repairs, the community does too. WIFR-LD CBS/CW+ 23 ROCKFORD |

A building in Columbus, Ohio, partially collapsed Monday afternoon while a firefighter was inside during an inspection. No injuries were reported in the collapse, including to the firefighter. A business that operated on the ground floor, at 1032 East Long Street, was closed Monday. The owner of the business lived in a different part of the building, but was not inside when it happened, fire officials said. Photos and video showed the collapse started along the back wall before a corner of the structure gave way. Columbus fire and police had multiple units on the scene during and after the collapse. Chief Jeffrey Geitter of the Columbus Division of Fire said a building inspector was checking another building nearby when he noticed a section of the back wall had given way and called firefighters. WCMH-TV NBC 4 COLUMBUS PHOTOS: It helps when batters in the Home Run Derby catch fire during their rounds. MLB nearly took that too literally. As the derby participants were announced at Dodger Stadium, the pyrotechnic jets were set off all around, with one burst shooting high into the sky behind the stage, appearing to nearly set Ronald Acuña Jr. on fire. MLB certainly pulled out all the stops for the introduction of each of the players. There was a DJ, dramatic introductions for each player and smoke machines as each came out of their entrances. Once all the players were on stage, the presentation was taken to the next level. There were fire jets on the backdrop of the stage as they waited for one another, and for group shots. Of course, with nearly setting one of the contestants on fire, MLB found itself getting roasted online. THE SPORTING NEWS An SUV rolled over onto a firefighter who was trying to rescue the driver and his son after a crash in New York City. The initial collision happened Sunday afternoon on 11th Avenue at West 42nd Street in Manhattan. The two-vehicle crash involved a BMW SUV and a Volvo sedan. Randi and Matthew Rahn said they were stopped at a red light in their Volvo when the SUV just landed on top of their vehicle. "I thought it was an explosion," Randi said. "It was a terrible, terrible loud crash." Cameras captured the BMW teetering on the Volvo. Good Samaritan Ben Arias jumped into action, trying to help the couple, as well as the occupants of the BMW, identified as a father and son, get out. "For the BMW side, I told them 'whatever you do, don't get out through the passenger side," Arias said. Randi and Matthew managed to make it out of their Volvo and somehow walked away without a scratch WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA VIDEO: A traveling EMS memorial stopped Monday in the Ohio Valley on its trek across the country. "We realized how impactful that is to the honorees families when they get to see all of this," said Jana Williams, president of the National EMS Memorial Service. The memorial made its way to Follansbee on Monday, one stop on its trip that began in Texas a few days ago and will end in Arlington, Va. at week's end. "Next weekend, we're going to pay homage to 72 EMS providers that lost their lives in the line of duty over the last year," Williams said. EMS personnel from Ohio, West Virginia, and even a medical helicopter crew from Pittsburgh, visited the memorial on Monday. The National EMS Memorial Service was formed in 1991 and centers around the Tree of Life Memorial. Each year, leaves are added, each for someone who died in the line of duty. The leaves include a name, agency, state and last call date, something very important to many. WTOV-TV NBC/FOX 9 STEUBENVILLE |
