Naperville Officials: 8 Residents Hurt, More Than 20 Homes Uninhabitable After Tornado Officials in suburban Naperville say that at least eight people were injured and more than 20 homes were left uninhabitable after a radar-confirmed tornado tore through the city on Sunday night. According to Naperville Fire Chief Mark Puknaitis, two of the victims who were injured were listed in critical condition after they were brought to area hospitals on Sunday, but both have already had their conditions upgraded and are expected to survive. "This is a tragic day, but it could have been a lot worse," he said. "It's amazing that we can stand here and say that we only had eight people transported to hospitals. It looks like everyone injured in this accident is going to survive, and that is something to celebrate." Fire officials say that 22 homes in the community were destroyed by the tornado, which is believed to have touched down just after 11 p.m. Sunday. In all, more than 130 homes sustained at least some damage from the storm. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO Algonquin-based Community Unit District 300 donates buses to fire department for training exercises It's not every day that the firefighters at Algonquin/Lake in the Hill's Fire Protection District get to take apart a school bus. But that's exactly what they did as part of their training Thursday afternoon, using a bus donated by Algonquin-based Community Unit District 300. District 300 donated three buses to the fire protection district this month, giving fire officials what they say is a rare but important opportunity to practice. One bus will be used for each shift of firefighters. Getting a school bus like this to use for training can be hard, Deputy Chief John Knebl said. "It's not like a car that was wrecked," Knebl said. "That was so nice of (District 300) to think of us." A bus crash, like the one simulated Thursday, is considered "high risk, low frequency," said Battalion Chief Matt Berg, who led the training. ILLINOIS DAILY HERALD - METERED SITE Peoria emergency personnel train on the Illinois River VIDEO: Law enforcement from around the area gathered along the Illinois River for training Monday morning. "This is a maritime security exercise. We're required to do these every three to four years. And it's a joint exercise that includes a lot of different agencies," Fon Du Lac Park District Chief Of Police Mike Johnson said. "So, we'll have the Central Illinois Response Team, which is our swat team out here. We'll have local authorities from the City of East Peoria, Peoria Fire Department. State's TRT team." The morning began with looking at the layout of the riverboat, then practicing boarding a large, moving water vessel like the Spirit of Peoria. While law enforcement practices boarding of the spirit of Peoria, the riverboat crew gets a benefit from the training as well. "We're both required to do a full-scale exercise for safety purposes on the Spirit of Peoria." Spirit pf Peoria Captain/Owner Alex Grieves said. CENTRAL ILLINOIS PROUD Mount Prospect Camp For Young Burn Survivors Turns 30 From June 16-20, 50 burn-injured children between the ages of 8-20 attended Camp "I Am Me." Hosted by the nonprofit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, based in Mount Prospect, the weeklong program took place at the YMCA Camp Duncan in Ingleside, located near the Illinois-Wisconsin border. "Camp ‘I Am Me' is a truly unique camp that allows young children who have been burned by scalding water, chemicals, fire, or electricity to be in a judgment-free environment with others who have shared similar experiences," Illinois Fire Safety Alliance Executive Director Philip Zaleski said. "Through our work and coordination with hospital burn units, the State Fire Marshal's Office, and fire departments across the state, we hope to reach all burn-injured children in Illinois so they can benefit from this camp." Massive fire rips through New Jersey grocery store VIDEO/PHOTOS: A massive early morning fire ripped through Lakewood's Picnic grocery store located at 357 Squankum Road, leaving the building fully destroyed. The blaze started at around 4:30 am and was burning for over 2 hours. The building was immediately evacuated and no civilian injuries were reported. Dozens of firefighters including mutual aid were on scene battling the blaze. Over 100 area residents were evacuated due to the fire. A first responder tells LNN that he was part of the evacuation process trying to get the neighbors to safety in case the fire would spread. He says that it wasn't easy, as many neighbors were not answering the door as they were deep asleep. Some doors had to be forced open in order to get people to safety. Damages from the fire were reported at nearby structures. Haley Dalton wants people to see the look on her son's face when she had to tell him his daddy was hit by a car. Five-year-old Finn was terrified. Two-year-old Parker Kate just wanted to fix him. But volunteer firefighter Spence Dalton was never worried about himself. "Where's my wife, where's my two kids. I knew it wasn't my time to go and I was going to fight my way through it," he said. "And not let myself go on that side of the road." He spoke to 11Alive on the phone because he still thinks his injuries are too hard to look at on camera. But he wants people to see the devastation of what can happen when drivers don't move over when they see an emergency vehicle. FORT WORTH CULTURE MAP Utah Firefighter/Aspiring Rapper Hopes To Spread Awareness About Mental Health In First Responders The Centers for Disease Control calls suicide a significant health problem, and first responders are at a higher risk. KSL-TV NBC 5 SALT LAKE CITY Unvaccinated Americans are at risk of a possibly more dangerous COVID-19 variant Some states are making great strides in vaccinating their residents against COVID-19, but the ones that are not may soon be contending with a more transmissible variant, experts say. About 45.2% of the US population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, CDC data showed, and in 16 states and Washington, DC, that proportion is up to more than half, and 16 have reached President Joe Biden's goal to vaccinate 70% of adults with at least one dose. But some states -- such as Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Wyoming -- have fully vaccinated less than 35% of residents. More than 500 days and 600,000 deaths since the first person in the United States was reported to have died from COVID-19, experts have upheld vaccines as the key to reopening the country safely and containing the variants, many of which are more transmissible.
