Bloomington Fire Chief leads from experience, helps promote team environment during the pandemic Leading with purpose, planning, and prevention. It's an approach utilized by Bloomington's Fire Chief Brian Mohr. In this week's CI Hero, Chief Mohr keeps public safety at the center, while protecting his team from the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19. Through battling fires, completing training, and intensive preparation, Fire Chief Brian Mohr leads his team of over 120 members through the COVID-19 pandemic. "We're trying to limit our exposure," said Chief Mohr. "We're trying to keep our employees healthy so that we can maintain that critical workforce." His decades of service as a first responder continues to prepare his team for the unknown. "We have gone through other pandemics," said the chief. "H1N1 in 2009. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Mike McGreal sworn in as Wheeling's new fire chief Mike McGreal was sworn in Monday as Wheeling's new fire chief, minus the public ceremony that typically occurs for such milestones in a village hall packed with supportive friends, family and colleagues. Due to the need for social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, McGreal was sworn in by Wheeling's clerk near the flagpole outside village hall. McGreal, 57, replaces Keith MacIsaac, who retired last week after 30 years as Wheeling's fire chief. McGreal previously was with the Wilmette Fire Department, retiring as chief there in 2017 before joining Wheeling later that year. He was Wheeling's deputy fire chief before his elevation to the top post Monday. "I can't say enough about the men and women I work with here," McGreal said. "They made me feel welcome the minute I walked in here." ILLINOIS DAILY HERALD Phil Hodak, former Kankakee firefighter, dies There was no other job Phil Hodak ever wanted once he became a Kankakee firefighter in the mid 1980s. Unfortunately, he was forced to retire from the department in December 1992, much earlier than he could ever imagined due to an enlarged heart, at the age of 34. Hodak died Sunday in his Kankakee home. He was 61. He died of complications associated with bladder cancer, his wife, Sue, said Monday. He had been diagnosed with the illness in April 2019, but by the time it had been diagnosed, the disease had already spread into his kidneys, lungs and bones. Devastated that he had to give up his firefighting position, the lifelong Kankakeean eventually found so many other ways to contribute to his family and community. "He had to adjust," Sue said. "He loved being a firefighter. That was his career. It was a brotherhood and he loved everything about it." KANKAKEE DAILY JOURNAL Lockport firefighter going online to teach safety lessons while ‘Cooking with Kids' Lt. Courtney Foster of the Lockport Township Fire Protection District can't visit schools now to promote fire safety, so she's turning to social media — and a few favorite recipes — to get her message across. Foster and some of her colleagues are sharing some of their favorite kid-friendly recipes on Facebook as a way to promote fire safety in the kitchen. The recipes are easy enough for children ages 8 or older to prepare, with some adult supervision, Foster said. The first episode of "Firefighters Cooking with Kids," is scheduled to be posted this weekend on the Lockport Township Fire Protection District Facebook page. In that episode, Foster will share one of her favorite childhood recipes for sloppy joes. She said she also was able to squeeze in a few safety tips as she prepared the meal. CHICAGO TRIBUNE - METERED SITE Gas leak leads to evacuation of some Jacksonville houses The sound of escaping natural gas could be heard from more than a block away after an excavation project busted a main line in the 500 block of West Lafayette Avenue about 2 p.m. Monday, causing the evacuation of several homes near the break. Jacksonville Fire Department responded to the 500 block of West Lafayette Avenue at 1:45 p.m. Monday after a private contractor struck a 2-inch gas main that ran along the road while attempting work on an excavation project. Fire Chief Doug Sills said gas and power had to be shut off to the area along the road, causing scattered outages for customers for a few hours. Service was restored to most by late afternoon. T-Mobile Loses GAO Appeal On April 8, 2020 the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that T-Mobile could not meet the public safety requirements that were established in a Request for Qualification (RFQ) that was issued by Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency which is an independent Federal entity. This RFQ for cellular services had as a requirement "enhanced priority-type features" which the agency identified as "AT&T FirstNet or equal". T-Mobile challenged that the RFQ failed to "clearly identify the salient characteristic for the brand name item (FirstNet) and that requirements for a private network with priority and pre-emptive capabilities are unduly restrictive". The GAO concluded that the agency has shown that the restrictive specifications are reasonably necessary to meet its legitimate need and they denied the protest in a letter issued in early April. ALL THINGS FIRSTNET An inside look into Alabama's Unified Command for COVID-19 Response team Information about the coronavirus is changing day by day, and that is why the state of Alabama has a team of state agencies working side by side to gather information and compile data about COVID-19 as the worldwide pandemic continues to unfold. Located in the RSA Tower in downtown Montgomery, Alabama's Unified Command for COVID-19 Response is a team comprised of four state agencies - the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA), Alabama National Guard, and Alabama Forestry Commission. Together, they have joined forces to help fight the deadly coronavirus. "Unified Command has been driving this operation now for over a month," said State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris. "It's been extremely important for us in public health because we don't, we simply don't have the capacity to handle the problem of this size." WSFA-TV CBS 12 NEWS MONTGOMERY As new firefighters join fight against COVID-19, Maryland academy takes steps to protect recruits When Chase Sherrard completed field training ride-alongs for the Frederick County fire academy in February, the novel coronavirus was far from the major global threat it has become when his class graduated last week. "Things are a lot different now than when we were doing ride-alongs, especially on [medical/sick person] calls," the probationary firefighter said. "Before we even go in to the residence, we're at the door asking, ‘Do you have a fever? Do you have a cough?' — That sort of thing. So it's definitely a different procedure than most other calls we run." As a newly-graduated probationary firefighter, Sherrard is currently relegated to an observational role on what the fire division refers to as "person under investigation" or PUI calls involving individuals suspected of having COVID-19. FREDERICK NEWS POST - METERED SITE Study: EMS may be spreading COVID-19 due to lack of consistent protocols Recently published results of a survey of EMS providers from across the U.S. revealed inconsistent protocols, policies and training related to COVID-19 response could be contributing to the spread of the virus. Cody Vaugh Gibson and Dr. George Donald Collier of the Calhoun Community College Biological Sciences Research Group; and Christian Ventura, a researcher at the Center for Mind and Brain Studies at Bard College, published preliminary results of their study this week, with the goal to "investigate available resources, PPE availability, sanitation practices, institutional policies and opinions" of EMS providers through a self-reported survey. The results, which reflect provider responses from all 50 states, revealed: Limited access to N95 respirators; Little or no benefits for COVID-19-related work ; No institutional policy on social distancing practices. EMS1 New Hampshire Governor Announces Raise for Cops, Firefighters, EMS Workers Police officers, firefighters and emergency medical services workers will be given an additional $300 weekly stipend to acknowledge their key role during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Chris Sununu said in a news conference on Monday. Part-time employees in these categories will receive $150 stipends. Eligibility for this extra pay began Monday and will continue through June 30. "Those who are the front lines and those at risk — we want to be there for them," Sununu said. He also said that $40 million will be made available to help cover COVID-19-related expenses for municipalities. The money is not to backfill revenue shortfalls, but is for direct expenses related to the pandemic such as childcare for first responders, telework costs and expenses for the deep cleaning of buildings.
