Kirkland Fire District receives a check to replace older equipment State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera presented a check to the Chief of the Kirkland Community Fire District to replace aging equipment. Back in March of this year, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) announced the recipients of the 2023 Small Equipment Grant Program. $1.5 million was awarded to 67 fire departments/districts and EMS providers across the state. Kirkland Community Fire District, in rural DeKalb County, was one of those 67 departments to receive grant funding. The department was awarded $22,866.55 to be used to purchase the latest generation of battery-powered, hydraulic extrication equipment. According to Fire Chief Chad Connell it has been about 20 years since the current (older) equipment has been replaced. WREX-TV NBC 13 ROCKFORD Apartment fire leaves residents in Metropolis homeless Some residents at an apartment complex in Metropolis are homeless after a fire on Mother's Day. It happened on East 8th Street around 2:30 a.m. Sunday with heavy fire coming from four of the apartment units according to Chief Micah Tolbert. Firefighters, police and other residents helped evacuate people living in eight units according to Tolbert. Crews kept the fire from spreading to three of the apartment units. Five units were a total loss according to Tolbert. Tammy Whitaker's apartment was destroyed in the fire. She and her husband, both disabled veterans, struggled to get out safely. When they did, they realized they had lost everything. "We have no renter's insurance and everything is destroyed inside the apartment. All my clothes, vehicles, furniture," Whitaker said. VIDEO: Massive fire destroys home in Massachusetts Crews remained on scene in Hull Monday night after a fire spread quickly, destroying a home on Q Street. SKY7-HD was over the area around 6:15 p.m. where smoke could be seen billowing over surrounding neighborhoods. Hours later, around 9 p.m., crews were still pouring water on the home while monitoring for hot spots. "You could see it traveling through the house," neighbor Janet Scribner said of moments Monday afternoon. "The windows down in the basement, one after another, started to light up with fire and then it all blew out at the end of the house." Area residents called 911 just after 5:30 p.m. Firefighters then rushed to the home. "We showed up with five guys," said Hull Fire Department Chief Chris Russo. "This is a lot of work for five guys on duty to maintain this." WHDH-TV ABC 7 BOSTON Non-profit 'Carry The Load' in Ohio actively honoring the sacrifices of our nation's heroes VIDEO: Making its way to Dallas, one step at a time. Literally. "Carry The Load" made its way into Northeast Ohio Monday. It started with a mission to restore the meaning of Memorial Day, but the group has expanded its efforts to include the sacrifices of first responders as well. Bryce Roland told us, "'Carry The Load's' mission is to provide an active way to honor the sacrifices of our nation's heroes and their families." Five teams are spread throughout the country, with the goal of walking about 20,000 miles to Dallas, Texas in 32 days. The teams will stop periodically, to spread the message and honor local heroes, like Cleveland firefighter Johnny Tetrick, who lost his life in the line of duty last year. The newest class of Cleveland firefighter cadets came to meet ‘Carry The Load', and honor Tetrick at the Firefighters Memorial. WEWS-TV ABC 5 CLEVELAND PHOTOS: 100 firefighters fought blaze at Iowa transfer & storage warehouse in 1964 On May 22, 1964, heavy, black smoke could be seen all over Cedar Rapids, coming from the mega fire that was consuming a one-story warehouse at 1201 Ninth St. SW. The fire that destroyed the Cedar Rapids Transfer & Storage Co. warehouse ranked "as one of the worst in Cedar Rapids history," The Gazette reported. Damage was estimated at more than $3 million -- about $30 million in today's dollars. The fire drew thousands of onlookers, who watched as burning debris drifted across the city, landing as far east as the Carnegie library downtown. Police quickly put up barricades a block away from the fire to restrict the curious from getting too close. The fire department's new double-boom aerial snorkel was used for the first time alongside old pumpers that were taken out of retirement. A gasoline transport rig was pulled in to keep the old pumper trucks running, THE GAZETTE CDC Finds Skin Infection Never Before Seen in US in New York City A new skin infection seemingly never detected before in the United States has been detected in at least two patients in New York City, and more cases are under review, federal health officials say. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified a "drug-resistant" infection responsible for causing severe ringworm cases in two women. The ringworm, also called tinea, causes itchy, red rashes on large areas of the body. NYC patients have experienced lesions on their neck, abdomen, buttocks and thighs, according to the CDC report released last week. Their particular strain of ringworm was tested and came back as Trichophyton indotineae, a strain that scientists say has reached "epidemic proportions" in South Asia. Periodic cases have been detected in other parts of the world, including Europe and Canada, but the two NYC cases are believed to be the first detected in the U.S. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
