Moline house fire displaces two residents, causes death of pets The cause of a Moline fire Monday morning that destroyed a house is under investigation. At approximately 10:36 a.m., the Moline Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 431 50th St. that displaced two residents and several pets, leaving the residence uninhabitable and deemed a total loss, according to a fire department release. While there were no injuries to the occupants, sadly several pets were lost, officials said. The American Red Cross is currently assisting the residents with temporary housing. First arriving fire units noted the structure as a small, single-story, single-family home with large amounts of fire showing from three sides. The residents were immediately located outside the structure and confirmed that there were no remaining occupants inside. KLJB-TV FOX 18 DAVENPORT Chicago Police Called For Possible Gunshot Victim In Lincoln Park Alley, Fire Then Breaks Out In Apartment Building Above Chicago Police officers responding to a report of a gunshot victim in Lincoln Park Monday ended up rushing into a fire in an apartment building – before firefighters could arrive. As CBS 2's Jermont Terry reported, fire investigators were sifting through a charred top-floor unit in the seven-story building at 420 W. Wrightwood Ave., while police stood guard to the entrances outside. Meanwhile, residents sat on the curb in disbelief – some of them barefoot. "I hear a loud, ‘Bang! Bang! Bang! Everybody get out!'" said neighbor Anthony Soltero. "I hear the police say, ‘It's a fire in the building,'" said building resident Jairol Abarca. "Everyone needed to evacuate." But before Abarca saw officers running into the building, he noticed police originally in the alley right below his balcony – tending to a man who was bleeding. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Peoria Fire Department determines arson cause of California Avenue fire The Peoria Fire Department determined that arson was the cause of a fire at a house near California and Nebraska Avenue at 5:31 p.m. Monday. According to a Peoria Fire Department press release, firefighters saw heavy smoke and fire on the stairway going up into the home's second floor, and in two bedrooms. Fire crews advanced an attack hose line to quickly extinguish the fire. The incident was under control by 5:42 p.m. Fire crews remained on the scene to ventilate smoke, put out hot spots, and perform overhaul. No residents were home at the time of the fire. A fire inspector called to investigate determined the cause to be arson. The fire caused an estimated $70,000 worth of damages. The tenants of the home will be displaced due to the fire. No injuries have been reported at this time. Iowa hotel fire forces people to jump from windows, 2 hospitalized VIDEO: Flames forced people and children to jump to safety in West Des Moines Monday night. Fire crews spent all night putting out a large fire at Valley West Inn on Westtown Parkway. The first crews out arrived just minutes after the building went up in flames. They were able to get everybody out, but that took some time. West Des Moines Fire officials said it started on the second floor of the south side. Before they could get water on the fire, they had to get everybody out of the building. They say 130 rooms were occupied around the time the fire started, around 11:15 p.m. When crews got there, they said people inside were running up to them, telling them that their family members and friends were trapped in the building. They said people were dropping children to firefighters from windows. KCCI-TV CBS 8 DES MOINES Take a behind-the-scenes look at airport fire-and-rescue department in Minnesota PHOTOS: There are some airport amenities you can't wait to use. The Shake Shack in JFK's Terminal 4. A newly renovated lounge. A fun shop, or a runway viewing deck. One of the most important services, though, which just about every commercial airport has, is one that you hope you'll never need. Every airport has an on-site fire-and-rescue department, often known as ARFF (airport rescue and firefighting), which responds to accidents and crashes on the airfield, emergency landings and other emergencies. The size of most commercial airports, coupled with the mass casualty potential of an aircraft disaster and the unique challenges an aviation emergency presents — such as the presence of jet fuel — means that having a local municipal fire department respond simply isn't effective enough. THE POINTS GUY Troopers say man assaulted Pennsylvania paramedics, damaged ambulance at homeless shelter A homeless man was jailed early Sunday after state police charged him with assaulting two Mutual Aid paramedics and damaging an ambulance that was dispatched to treat him at a Derry Township shelter. Michael J. Muchnock III, 38, who has lived in Hempfield, was arrested on multiple criminal charges, including aggravated assault, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, harassment, institutional vandalism and simple assault after the 1 a.m. incident at the Union Mission on Harrison Avenue. Trooper John Robertson said Latrobe police and state troopers were dispatched to the homeless shelter when paramedics reported an "out of control male" they were sent to treat for an unspecified medical issue had become combative. His bio describes him as PJ is a "natural caretaker," and "someone who wants to make sure that the people he loves are always happy, protected, and healthy." The 30-year-old is "very ready" to get married — with the right woman, of course. Nothing lights Henderson's fire more than "a loyal woman with drive and beauty," his bio adds, especially if he and his lady can work out and travel together. HOUSTON CULTURE MAP Florida Senator files bill to stiffen penalties for firefighter murderers Republican Sen. Ed Hooper is proposing legislation that would stiffen criminal penalties related to the murder of a on-duty firefighter. Under the proposal (SB 370), the convicted murderer of a firefighter would face the same consequences as a person who killed a police or correctional officer — life in prison without the possibility of parole. Speaking to Florida Politics, Hooper said firefighters are worthy of the same legal classification as their first responder counterparts. They, he asserted, face many of the same risks as law enforcement officers. "I just don't think that they ought to be treated differently if they're all responding to the same emergencies at the same time," Hooper, a retired firefighter himself, said. Indeed, firefighter and paramedics are frequently involved in perilous situations — from police raids and active shooter incidents to hostage situations and other mass casualty incidents that require police intervention.
