2 Firefighters Injured In Blaze Near Mundelein Two firefighters were injured in a blaze that left a home near Mundelein uninhabitable Saturday morning. The blaze broke out at about 9:20 a.m. in the 26000 block of Maple Avenue. When firefighters arrived at the scene they found the blaze on the roof toward the back of the house, according to a news release. They also found a power line down in the backyard. Fire crews entered the home and extinguished the blaze while ComEd worked to secure the downed electrical wires. One firefighter was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, according to a news release from the Countryside Fire Protection District. LIBERTYVILLE PATCH Extra-Alarm Fire Rages In Historic Pilsen Building An extra-alarm fire broke out late Monday in a historic building in Pilsen. The fire was raging at 5:40 p.m. at 1125 W. 18th St. The Fire Department called a 2-11 alarm for extra equipment and personnel. Flames were seen shooting from the roof of the building. The Fire Department reported the blaze affected the top floor through the roof. The Fire Department reported firefighters were ordered out, so that the fire had to be attacked from outside. The building houses Vanessa's Unisex hair salon in a ground floor storefront and residences above. The building is part of the Pilsen Historic District. The City of Chicago reports local architect Anton C. Charvat designed the three-and-a-half story building for Bohemian Immigrant undertakers the Urban Brothers. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Clarendon Hills residents concerned their city may have to share firetruck with another town Leaders in one suburb are looking to share a fire department ladder truck with another community, saving a big chunk of change. Community members, however, say it's a safety issue. A village leader in Clarendon Hills says that obviously public safety comes first, but if they can get by with sharing a ladder truck with a neighboring community, then why not save that money? Some community members are upset at the thought that the Clarendon Hills Fire Department wouldn't have its own ladder truck, fearing response times would be longer. They have organized, and there is a Change.org petition as well as yard signs being put up. The issue at hand is the current ladder truck is getting old and needs to be replaced. The cost is well over a million dollars. The village manager says they are still researching their options to replace it or rely on another department when they need the ladder truck. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO Quincy City Council delays vote on police, fire chief ordinance The Quincy City Council on Monday tabled a proposed ordinance that would give the mayor the authority to appoint the city's police and fire chiefs. After receiving heavy opposition to the measure over during the last two weeks, the council won't consider the ordinance until Oct. 4. Mayor Mike Troup had to cast the tiebreaking vote to table the ordinance after aldermen were divided 7-7. Aldermen Eric Entrup, R-1; Dave Bauer, D-2; Kelly Mays, R-3; Parker Freiburg, R-3; Richie Reis, D-6; Katie Awerkamp, D-6 and Ben Uzelac, D-7 voted against tabling the ordinance. Troup said that with all of the discussion over the past few weeks, he felt there were things that could be easily amended to satisfy the concerns of the public. QUINCY HERALD-WHIG Herrin firefighters return from Louisiana cleanup efforts Local firefighters have been assisting in Louisiana cleanup efforts following Hurricane Ida. Those emergency responders returned home late Sunday night. The state of Illinois sent three strike teams to Louisiana, to help communities recover after Hurricane Ida. "We had three engine companies plus myself stationed in Albany, Louisiana. In ten days we ran just over 60 calls," says Herrin Fire Chief Shawn Priddy. More than 60 firefighters made the trip and Chief Priddy was the Strike Team Leader in Albany. "Did a lot of tarping roofs, did a lot of tree cutting, did a lot of unloading supplies from trailers at local churches that were handing out supplies and food. Helped with traffic control. We stayed extremely busy," states Priddy. Priddy says crews have made significant progress but it could be another month before everyone has power. WSIL-TV ABC 3 HARRISBURG PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

One hurt in honey oil lab explosion in California: 'The garage door was in the middle of the street' VIDEO: One person is in critical condition after a possible honey oil lab explosion in Merced Monday morning. Merced Fire Department Fire Chief Derek Parker said the person was airlifted to a local hospital. "The garage door was in the middle of the street,' Parker told ABC10. The explosion was reported just after 8 a.m. near Colma Avenue and Wildcat Drive in Merced. Fire officials say the two-story home was fully engulfed by the time crews arrived. Five other homes experienced damage as a result of the explosion, according to Parker. In total, six homes were impacted. The fire did not spread beyond the original home. Parker did say firefighters found "a lot of marijuana" inside the home, as well as large cylinders of butane. Though what actually sparked the fire is under investigation he emphasized. KXTV ABC 10 SACRAMENTO Report outlines 10 recommendations on how Massachusetts fire department can prevent line-of-duty deaths Worcester City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. submitted to the City Council on Monday a 248-page report that examined every aspect of the Worcester Fire Department, including how it can better prevent line-of-duty deaths. Since 1999, the city has suffered the loss of nine firefighters who all died while battling blazes. The department also suffered another line of duty death in July 2019 when Lt. John Kennedy died after fighting a fire. Kennedy's death however, was not mentioned in the ESCI report. The consulting company, which began its research in August of 2020, provided the city with 10 recommendations to improve the department that range from a complete overhaul of leadership to improved support service staffing. "We have an extremely talented group of individuals that want to do a great job," Deputy Fire Chief Martin Dyer said in an interview. MASSLIVE.COM Veteran EMT misses a paperwork deadline; New York state is forcing him to retake beginner training Ryan O'Connor has spent more than a decade handling thousands of calls while working as a volunteer emergency medical technician with the Snyder Fire Department. Most came evenings and overnights because O'Connor works full-time in the banking field. The way he sees it, that service didn't matter much to the state Bureau of Emergency Medical Services last spring, in the midst of a pandemic, after a miscommunication within the all-volunteer department caused O'Connor's EMT recertification paperwork to be sent six days after his certification expired. A bureau official barred him from handling emergency medical calls until he repeated a beginner-style refresher course at his department's expense. "All the missed time from family and sleepless nights responding to EMS calls apparently means nothing to the New York State Department of Health," O'Connor told The Buffalo News. BUFFALO NEWS Parts Of Minnesota City Still Plagued By Needle Littering; Firefighters Picked Up Hundreds Last Month It's been two years since WCCO first reported on the dangerous needle littering problem in parts of south Minneapolis. At that time, Minneapolis firefighters planned to pick up the needles until the city found a better solution. But despite their efforts, the problem is arguably worse, says Assistant Minneapolis Fire Chief Melanie Rucker. "This year it seems like it's almost double, you know, the amount of needles that we're picking up, and there has been an uptick in some of the overdoses and drug-related responses that we go to," Rucker said. Minneapolis Fire Stations 5 and 7 on Bloomington and Franklin avenues are the busiest, with firefighters picking up hundreds of needles last month alone. WCCO revisited an alley near 25th and Bloomington avenues, where syringes with needles still attached are everywhere. WCCO-TV CBS 4 MINNEAPOLIS Florida city features father-daughter firefighting rescue team A fire in an attic may not be the way most people start their day, but for rookie Tampa firefighter Lauren Glanton, it seems to come naturally. "That was my alarm clock," she said. "It was fire time, time to rock and roll!" Answering the call runs in the family. "Broken legs, gunshot wounds, overdoses and everything else," said Lauren's dad, Larry, a Tampa Fire Rescue paramedic who has seen it all during his 24 years with the department. But now, Lauren has become the first daughter to follow in her father's footsteps in the department's more than 100-year history. There have been dozens of sons who have followed their fathers, but none like Lauren. "I am the first," she laughed. But it didn't come without concern. "I told her that you're going to see the worst of the worst," said Larry. WTVT-TV FOX 13 TAMPA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
