Livestock Roam I-80 In Joliet After Semi Wreck: 'It Was Interesting' Interstate 80 heading east was closed late Tuesday afternoon after a semi-trailer carrying livestock rear-ended another semi, causing a huge wreck, Joliet Fire Chief Greg Blaskey informed Joliet Patch. It happened around 3:40 p.m. between Houbolt Road and Larkin Avenue. The driver hauling the cattle suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash, according to the Illinois State Police. Blaskey said that several cows were dead at the scene, while several other cattle escaped. Joliet police and Illinois State Police were on the scene trying to corral the roaming livestock, the fire chief said. The driver of the semi carrying the livestock was taken by Joliet Fire Department ambulance to Ascension St. Joe's hospital, Blaskey said. JOLIET PATCH Mural inside Englewood church remains untouched by days-long fire as flare-ups continue Fire department crews were back on site at Englewood's Antioch Missionary Baptist Church on Tuesday afternoon as flare ups continued to pop up. They had been there twice on Tuesday, and nearly every day since a construction-related fire consumed the historic church on Good Friday. "I don't want to say dawn on me, but I'm beginning to really process, that's a better word, process the magnitude of the loss," said Pastor Gerald Dew. And yet, despite the ongoing flare ups, one thing remained nearly untouched: an inside mural portraying the resurrection of Christ. It is something Dew chooses to see as a sign of things to come. "He promised he would return. And so, just as he is risen, and has ascended, we believe we will rise from this," Dew said. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Semi Catches Fire on I-72 near WInchester The Illinois State Police and Winchester Fire Department responded to a call of a tractor-trailer that caught fire this morning. According to a report by Illinois State Police District 20, at approximately 7:40 am today a green 2007 Sterling semi-truck pulling a load of new vehicles was traveling eastbound on Interstate 72 near mile marker 51. The driver told police he heard a tire blow out and saw pieces of the tire on the roadway so he then got off at the Winchester exit 52 and parked on the shoulder of the eastbound on-ramp from Old Route 36. The driver said he then saw a fire coming from the front tires on the driver's side. He was unable to contain the fire after attempting to put it out with a fire extinguisher. The Winchester Fire Department arrived and was able to extinguish the fire. WLDS-AM 1180 JACKSONVILLE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Blaze at Georgia storage facility sends 5 firefighters to hospital VIDEO: An Augusta firefighter is still in the hospital Tuesday after a storage facility fire on Monday. Firefighters continue to check to make sure the fire does not start back up. They say there are steps to help reduce the risk of something like this from happening. We spoke with one storage facility owner down the street, who says this is something out of a nightmare. Smoke could be seen from the highway as firefighters worked to contain a raging storage facility fire at Simply Self Storage. "My heart just sank," said Max Vallotton. Vallotton saw the smoke on his drive into work. He's the owner of Gate 5 Self Storage. "It was definitely a nightmare. The smoke was just very heavy and very black smoke, and I just cringed," he said. After doing this for 16 years, it makes him think about what could happen. WRDW-TV CBS 12 AUGUSTA How New Jersey firefighters saved 6 teenagers trapped in trampoline park elevator PHOTOS: It's still sort of a mystery how six New Jersey teenagers fresh from the Rockin' Jump Trampoline Park in Wayne on Friday got stuck in an exit elevator. But Wayne Fire Department Commissioner William Rodriguez has a pretty good theory. "They've got that jumping still in their system. And when they get in the elevator and they talk about their experience inside," Rodriguez told Coffee or Die Magazine, "they may start jumping in the elevator, which whacks out the elevator." They whacked it out so well that the car got stuck in the 50-foot elevator shaft, and no one from the first or penthouse floors could reach them. Rodriguez and a cop were the first ones to arrive on scene at roughly 5:10 p.m. Rodriguez tried flipping the elevator's main power switch off, waiting 10 seconds, and then clicking it back on. COFFEE OR DIE MAGAZINE Flood Forecasting Still A Challenge Since Historic 1997 Flood & Fire in North Dakota VIDEO: Twenty-five years ago, floodwaters could no longer be held back in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks leading to catastrophic loss of property. It's something people who lived there will never forget. One man who still lives in Grand Forks was part of the National Weather Service at the time, a place some people and politicians blamed for a bad flood prediction. Never mind the wet cycle and record-breaking snowfall of just under 100 inches that season, leading to the Flood of the Century. The images today are as shocking as they were, playing out in real time, 25 years ago. The Grand Cities under siege by the rising Red River of the North. President Bill Clinton visited to see the damage days later and said, "The next few days are going to be very, very hard on a lot of people." KVRR-TV FOX 15 FARGO Fallen Firefighters To Be Honored Before NASCAR Race At Dover Motor Speedway in Delaware Three fallen Baltimore firefighters and the Clayton, Del. fire chief who last month died in a fall will be honored before the DuraMAX Drydene 400 at Dover Motor Speedway next month. Family members of Baltimore firefighters Lt. Paul Butrim, Lt. Kelsey Sadler and Kenny Lacayo, and Clayton Fire Company Fire Chief John M. Pridemore, have been invited to participate in a lap atop fire trucks before the NASCAR Cup Series race. The race is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 1. Butrim, Sadler and Lacayo died in the line of duty on Jan. 24 after a vacant home partially collapsed while they were inside, trapping them underneath the rubble. At a public memorial in February, Battalion Chief Joshua Fannon recalled how Butrim was a huge NASCAR fan and would regularly attend races at Dover, also known as the Monster Mile. WJZ-TV CBS 13 BALTIMORE New York fire department celebrates 182 years The Dundee Fire Department will celebrate the 182nd anniversary of the volunteer emergency responder group, Saturday, April 23.
