CORRECTION: Sugar Grove Fire Protection District Firefighter Who Recently Died from Coronavirus Infection Was Not Currently Active with the Fire District Fred J. Felella Jr., who passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2020 was a former Volunteer/Paid-On-Call Firefighter with the Sugar Grove Fire Protection District from 1994 to 2007. Fred J. Felella Jr. was not active as a firefighter with the Sugar Grove Fire Protection District during the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic of 2019-2020. According to Sugar Grove Fire Protection District Fire Chief William Perkins, the thoughts and prayers of the current members and staff of the Fire District are with the Felella family during this time. ARLINGTON CARDINAL Buffalo Grove approves pay hikes for firefighters Buffalo Grove trustees Monday approved a new salary agreement with the village's firefighters' union, despite concerns raised by a member of the public over raising pay during a pandemic-induced financial crisis. The agreement with the Buffalo Grove Professional Firefighter/Paramedic Association runs from May 1, 2020 until April 30, 2021 and raises the salaries of firefighters/paramedics 2.5% and fire lieutenants 2%. The budget impact, Human Resources Director Arthur Malinowski said, is $111,000. The salary agreement is separate from the main collective bargaining agreement, which was scheduled to end April 30. But trustees extended that agreement through Oct. 31, in recognition, officials said, of employees' response to the pandemic. During the virtual meeting, resident Brian Costin called in and told trustees that the village should be more focused on funding pensions. ILLINOIS DAILY HERALD Cook County Is Considering Disclosing COVID-19 Patients' Addresses to First Responders Some Cook County commissioners want the county's public health department to temporarily disclose the addresses of suburban residents who have tested positive for COVID-19, saying the move would make first responders safer. That's despite the Illinois Department of Public Health recommending against such disclosures over privacy concerns. Commissioner Scott Britton, a Democrat from north suburban Glenview, is the lead sponsor on a resolution that recommends — but does not require — the address disclosures of COVID-positive residents for at least 60 days. Cook County would only disclose addresses to first responders and later purge the information. Britton said he's heard from several police and fire chiefs, mayors and village managers about concerns for their first responders' safety when it comes to answering 911 calls. WBEZ-FM 91.5 CHICAGO PUBLIC RADIO Olympia Fields police detective details harrowing experience being hospitalized for COVID-19 Mark Akiyama is a burly 47-year-old Olympia Fields detective who has seen much many of us don't but nothing, he says, prepared him to fight COVID-19. "I have trouble sleeping I wake up I start crying thinking about the whole situation," Akiyama said. He begrudgingly boarded an ambulance for Silver Cross Hospital March 26. Four days after coming down with a fever from who knows where, he was tested for the disease at a pop up testing site in Joliet. Akiyama is a Detective Corporal investigations with the Olympia Fields Police Department. "I know that you when you are on a ventilator there's a good chance that you are not coming back and my wife she made the decision," Akiyama said. "She's like 'look I love you to death' she says 'either you are going to die or you go on this ventilator, and you are strong and you will make it through, I know you will.'" Six days later, Akiyama said he began to pull through. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

New EMT communication cards will help West Virginia first responders better serve patients who have trouble hearing or speaking St. Albans firefighters and EMTs carry a lot of heavy equipment around to help keep people safe. Now they have a much lighter tool to work with as well. "When we do a treatment ‘is your pain better or worse, the same?' and I thought ‘that's not good enough' we have to have something that we can use to communicate more effectively," says Lt. Chris Collins with the St. Albans Fire Department. So Collins was brought on board to help develop the "EMT communication card" that will help those who may be deaf, hard of hearing, have and intellectual disability or maybe autism communicate with first responders. "A lot of times they can't verbalize their symptoms, but they can point to a picture easier than they can verbalize what's going on with them we found using pictographs is a more effective way of communicating with those folks as well," Collins adds. WOWK-TV CBS 13 HUNTINGTON Could a New Ultraviolet Technology Fight the Spread of Coronavirus? A technique that zaps airborne viruses with a narrow-wavelength band of UV light shows promise for curtailing the person-to-person spread of COVID-19 in indoor public places. The technology, developed by Columbia University's Center for Radiological Research, uses lamps that emit continuous, low doses of a particular wavelength of ultraviolent light, known as far-UVC, which can kill viruses and bacteria without harming human skin, eyes and other tissues, as is the problem with conventional UV light. "Far-UVC light has the potential to be a ‘game changer,'" said David Brenner, professor of radiation biophysics and director of the center. "It can be safely used in occupied public spaces, and it kills pathogens in the air before we can breathe them in." The research team's experiments have shown far-UVC effective in eradicating two types of airborne seasonal coronaviruses (the ones that cause coughs and colds). COLUMBIA NEWS Georgia veterans answer 911 calls as first responders get stretched during coronavirus pandemic For one Good Samaritan group in southern Georgia, good things come in threes. The coronavirus has sickened 19,398 people in Georgia and killed 774 people as of this writing, straining the resources of first responders. The Community Warriors, a volunteer group known for its benevolent deeds in and around Columbus, Ga. have stepped up once again to help its neighbors and provide relief for first responders. The group of mostly veterans has answered the call to assist 911 and the Columbus Fire and EMS by dispatching three person teams to respond to nonemergency calls. "Because of the pandemic, his staff [interim fire Chief Greg Lang's] is getting stretched a little bit more," Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson said. "I tell you those guys [The Community Warriors] are exactly what they bill themselves as," Henderson added. FOX NEWS 'FrontLine WarmLine' launches to help Maine's health care workers and first responders manage emotional toll of COVID-19 Governor Janet Mills' administration announced Tuesday the launch of a new volunteer phone support service, the FrontLine WarmLine, to help Maine health care workers and first responders manage the stress of serving on the front lines of the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The FrontLine Warmline serves health care professionals, such as physicians, nurses and counselors, as well as emergency medical services personnel, law enforcement, and others who are directly responding to the pandemic in Maine. The line is staffed by volunteer professionals activated through Maine Responds, including licensed psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, social workers, and nurse practitioners, who can help callers to deal with anxiety, irritability stress, poor sleep, grief or worry and, if needed, connect them with additional supports. WCSH-TV NBC 6 PORTLAND Michigan: Engineers MacGyver Shipping Container to Sanitize COVID-19 PPE The shortage of PPE is getting worse, with hundreds of medical professionals and first responders paying the ultimate price. But if the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it's that people are resourceful. Scientists at a crime lab in Kansas, for example, deduced a method to use evidence drying cabinets to decontaminate N95 masks for multiple uses. Now, an engineering team from Michigan Tech University has Macgyvered a refrigerated shipping container, commercial-grade baking sheets and modified oven into a prototype mobile sanitation unit. The team, which includes the family unit of Dan and Amy Barnard and cousin Andrew, is actively working with a team from the FDA to get approval for Emergency Use Authorization so they can make the design and licensing widely available to communities and healthcare facilities. The design and technology behind the idea is simple, yet ingenious. LABRATORY EQUIPMENT PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
