The Peoria Fire Department pulled a victim out of a house fire early Wednesday morning. The fire happened at a home located at 5006 N. Endres. Peoria Fire crews received a call of a structure fire just before 5:00 a.m. When crews arrived at the scene, they found a home with smoke and flames coming out from the side and roof. Battalion Chief Michael Hughes said a neighbor south of the building reported one person living at the address. Following that, crews on scene made it into the home, and discovered one victim inside the residence. CENTRAL ILLINOIS PROUD Anewborn baby boy is in good condition at a hospital after a passerby found the infant in a drawer of a piece of furniture seemingly discarded in an alley, according to Chicago police and firefighters. Paramedics were called about 8 a.m. Wednesday to the 2300 block of North Oak Park Avenue in the Montclare neighborhood by a person who located the newborn inside the drawer of a dresser, said Larry Langford, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department. The child was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital where he was listed in good condition, Langford said. "It's a good thing somebody came by. It's hot out there, it could've ended differently," he said. "But it's all seemingly worked out." MATTOON JOURNAL GAZETTE & TIMES-COURIER VIDEO: Community members, city officials and Rockford Police and Fire Commissioners joined the last four finalists for the Rockford Fire Chief face-to-face Tuesday night to get to know the candidates more. "Why are you interested in the fire chief position?" asked Ingrid Hargrove who is on Rockford's Fire and Police Commission. Hargrove is one of the three people who will make the ultimate decision on who will lead the Rockford Fire Department in the future. She, like many others at Tuesday's meet and greet, want to know why each of the final four think they're best candidate for the job. "I didn't want to go anywhere else. My heart was here," said candidate Kyle Hill. "I never thought that I would have the opportunity to be the fire chief of this department because I thought Chief Bergsten was going to be here for the rest of my career." WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Neighbors worked together Wednesday morning in Cahokia Heights, Illinois to keep flames from a house fire from spreading to other homes. The fire started at a vacant home located in the 1700 block of Parklane Drive at about 4:45 a.m. The woman living in the house next door was worried the fire was going to spread to her house. She then got pots and pans, filled them with water, and started throwing the water on the flames ahead of firefighters arriving. A man who lives in the neighborhood noticed the fire and noticed the woman struggling to fight the fire. He then got his garden hose and helped her. The neighbors had success keeping the flames from spreading to other homes. Authorities told FOX 2's Nissan Rogue Runner reporter Jason Maxwell that just last week people were renovating the home in order to prepare it for potential renters. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS Police, firefighters and paramedics from Prospect Heights and Wheeling responded about 6:40 a.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2021 to a report of a helicopter crash landing incident just south of Chicago Executive Airport in Prospect Heights and Wheeling. Police and firefighters on arrival discovered a helicopter on the passenger side in the northbound lanes of Milwaukee Avenue at the intersection with Apple Drive in Prospect Heights. At least one person — the helicopter pilot — was injured and transported to a nearby hospital by Wheeling Fire Department paramedics. Injuries were initially assessed to be minor. THE CARDINAL |

VIDEO: A large warehouse fire in Fort Atkinson Tuesday displaced about 50 residents and injured some of the 150 firefighters called to the scene. The fire was reported around noon in the 700 block of Oak Street on the city's north side, police said. There was no one in the building at the time. Fire Chief Daryl Rausch said at a press conference Tuesday evening that some firefighters suffered injuries due to the heat and were treated at the scene or taken to a local hospital. Rausch said crews nearly "drained the city water system" while combating the blaze, leading to the department's decision to let the rest of the building and its contents burn. The warehouse contained tires for military vehicles, unspecified chemicals and cans from a local canning company. WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL VIDEO: When disaster strikes, communication is crucial. That's why the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency and Gov. Dan McKee announced Tuesday that first responders will soon start using some groundbreaking technology. These so-called "Compact Rapid Deployables" are mobile units that use satellite connectivity to make sure first responders have access to cellular and wi-fi coverage wherever they are. "During the tragic events of 9/11, it was determined that due to the extraordinary amount of cell phone usage, critical first responder messaging was lost," RIEMA Director Marc Pappas said. "First responders will be prioritized in the system so they will be heard above all of the noise in the cell tower, even in remote areas like the woods it will work." WPRI-TV CBS 12 PROVIDENCE The 70's TV show "Emergency!" introduced the concept of paramedics to millions of viewers and inspired thousands to become EMS practitioners themselves. Some historians say it launched modern EMS in the U.S. Now the two stars of the show are co-producing a documentary to tell the story of today's paramedic—following a pandemic that strained our healthcare system and revealed the critical role that paramedics play in caring for their communities. "My life was saved by two firefighter paramedics," said Randy Mantooth, who played Johnny Gage in the "Emergency!" series. "My sister's life was saved by a paramedic and a flight nurse. They literally gave us our lives back, and yet I don't even know their names." "Over-worked, sometimes overlooked and nearly always taken for granted, paramedics are real-world heroes," Mantooth said. "My hope is that "Into the Unknown" will provide the public with an understanding of and appreciation for the critical role these individuals play." JOURNAL OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES When Gerald Sanford retired from the FDNY in 1997, he never anticipated that he would return to his post after one of the darkest days in American history. In "It Started with a Helmet," Sanford and his partner, Chris Griffith, detail the gripping story of Sanford's contributions to the FDNY after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers. Sanford, a Staten Island native who grew up in Concord and later settled with his wife in Grant City, has a long history of serving the country and New York City. After graduating from McKee High School, he joined the U.S. Navy and served for two years of active duty until 1962. In 1965, he was hired by the NYPD, where he worked for three years. After that, he began a three decade-long career with the FDNY. STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE VIDEO: If you look closely, there are still scars left over from the explosion of a ruptured natural gas line in San Francisco's Inner Richmond neighborhood more than two years ago. The blast rocked Geary Blvd. at Parker Ave. on the afternoon of Feb. 6, 2019. A two-story building on the corner – site of Hong Kong Lounge II restaurant and residences on the second floor – was extensively damaged by a giant orange fireball that sent diners running for their lives. Sisters Cindy and Judy Chan were inside the restaurant celebrating Chinese New Year with their parents at the time, sitting right next to the fire when it erupted. "I heard popping sounds. I thought it was fire crackers because it's Chinese New Year," Cindy Chan told KPIX 5 at the time. Within seconds, all they could see was a bright orange glow surrounding the restaurant.
