Home catches fire, Chicago Fire Department says no injuries reported A home caught fire in Ukrainian Village Tuesday night. Emergency crews responded to the scene at a two-flat in the 800-block of Winchester Avenue around 8 p.m. A neighbor who lives across the street told ABC7 Eyewitness News he saw the sparks and smoke as it ignited. The Chicago Fire Department was able to put the fire out by 8:35 p.m. It was not immediately clear which unit the fire started in, how extensive the damage was and whether any people or families have been displaced. Chicago fire officials said no one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Decatur officially opens new fire station VIDEO: The Decatur Fire Department cut the ribbon on a new fire house. Station seven is on chestnut avenue south of Lake Decatur on Route 36. The station is the third new house to open in the city, and it will be the last the city builds for the time being. Decatur fire chief Jeff Abbott says the new station will improve response time in that area of the city. "Building a fire station is much different a lot of people think we can just throw out the house next door because of all the codes and standards of living and working here it's a little bit different project than what you originally thought." The new station will not be coming with new equipment or trucks. The department will be relocating equipment to the new facility. WCIA-TV CBS 3 CHAMPAIGN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Thousands of fire chiefs from around the world attend IAFC conference in Missouri VIDEO: Firefighters from around the world will be in Kansas City this week. It's part of a massive International Association of Fire Chiefs Fire-Rescue International Conference and Expo. The 150th IAFC anniversary event, held in KC this year, draws in around 10,000 fire chiefs and company officers. Donna Black, the president of IAFC, says it helps firefighters learn and grow in a changing world. "Looking at what you need in the future," she said. "Part of it is just the collaboration to come together, talk about our issues, see great presentations that bring us possible solutions." With climate change leading to more brush fires and EV cars with huge batteries that burn different from other fires, new solutions are necessary. "So technology is getting almost ahead of us a little bit," Black said. KSHB-TV NBC 41 KANSAS CITY Related: Pierce and IAFC Spotlight 2023 Fire Chiefs of the Year New law aims to help New Hampshire firefighters with occupational cancer A law that went into effect this month in New Hampshire makes all types of cancer among firefighters a presumptive occupational disease. The new statute is aimed at making it easier for firefighters with cancer to receive workers' compensation. Research shows firefighters are at a higher risk of contracting the disease than the general population, and they deserve the presumption that it was caused by their work, Brian Ryll, president of the Professional Fire Fighters of New Hampshire said in an interview. Gov. Chris Sununu signed Senate Bill 71 on Aug. 4. "While we are excited about the passage of Senate Bill 71, there is little time to celebrate our success," Ryll said. "Firefighters are contracting cancer at an alarming rate, and we must do more for prevention and detection." NEW HAMPSHIRE PUBLIC RADIO 36 years ago: Northwest Flight 255 crashes after takeoff at Detroit Metro Airport, killing 156 VIDEO: Wednesday marks 35 years since the deadliest plane crash in Michigan history. On August 16, 1987, Northwest Flight 255 took off from Romulus headed for Arizona — it didn't make it far. Investigators blame a number of pilot errors on the crash, but the most important takeaway is the lives lost: 156 people were killed that day, all but one person on board and two people who were in vehicles near I-94 and Middlebelt Road. The firefighters who arrived that night had no idea what lay ahead. The initial call for a plane crash shed little light on the fact that it was a passenger plane — Lt. John Thiede, of the Romulus Fire Department, explained his rescue efforts to 7 Action News in 2013. He explained that he and another firefighter had heard a faint moan, or cry, and were trying to locate where it was coming from. WXYZ-TV ABC 7 DETROIT Battery storage safety incidents guide for first responders published by American Clean Power Association The American Clean Power Association (ACP) has launched a new guide aimed at helping first responders understand and deal with battery storage safety incidents. Including recommendations for pre-incident planning and incident response, the guide addresses potential hazards such as fire, explosions, arc flash, shock and toxic chemicals. It is written with lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery energy storage system (BESS) technologies in mind, but the trade group said some elements of the guide may apply to other technologies. The importance of engaging with first responders on topics of safety has been a major talking point in the industry for some time, particularly since the 2017 fire and explosion in Arizona which injured four firefighters.
