400 Scrap Cars Catch Fire At Joliet Auto Salvage Yard City of Joliet firefighters were battling a large blaze Tuesday evening at Speedway Auto Parts in the 1300 block of Herkimer Street near the Old Joliet Prison. Joliet Fire Chief Greg Blaskey told Patch authorities believe the fire started in several junked cars on the property, and that firefighters were using front loaders to separate the cars and extinguish the fire. The fire started at 6:55 p.m. "There is no life safety issues or exposure concerns," Blaskey told Joliet Patch. "The cars are being pulled apart with heavy machinery by the site owner to allow crews to access the seat of the fire. Due to poor water supply in the area, we have tankers from surrounding agencies assisting." JOLIET PATCH Mount Prospect Firefighter Battling Spinal Injury; Over $30K Raised In Less Than 24 Hours In less than 24 hours, over $30,000 was raised for a Mount Prospect firefighter who suffered a spinal injury over the weekend. Deputy Fire Chief Tom Wang said Winkelmann was swimming with friends in a shallow area of Fox Lake when he suffered the injury. "For those who have not seen, Mitchell Winkelmann has been in a severe accident and is battling spinal cord trauma," it was written on the GoFundMe page. JOURNAL & TOPICS NEWSPAPERS ONLINE Firefighter Bitten Rescuing 15 Cats From Burning Evanston House One firefighter was injured while rescuing more than a dozen cats from a house fire Monday in Evanston, according to fire officials. Around 8:45 a.m., fire crews were called to a report of a house on fire in the 1300 block of Dewey Avenue. They arrived to find heavy smoke and fire on the first floor, according to Division Chief Kim Kull. Two residents were able to escape the building on their own, Kull said, one who had been working in the basement and another who had been asleep upstairs at the time. Firefighters quickly upgraded the alarm to bring in help from neighboring towns. EVANSTON PATCH Father, daughter create American flag out of retired fire hoses; Gift to Herrin Fire Department The Herrin Fire Department is home to an American flag made entirely of recycled fire hoses. It was created and gifted by a father and daughter who want to say, 'Thank you,' to local first responders. "We just wanted to let the guys know that there are still people out there thinking of them," says Kyle Essick. Kyle and his daughter Amelia say they came across retired fire hoses from the Herrin Fire Department. "I grabbed Mia (Amelia) and said, 'How about we make a flag out of the hoses they used to fight fires with,'" Kyle explains. "And she thought it was a good idea." For two weeks, Kyle and Amelia spray painted the hoses, made and torched a frame and attached 50 stars to make the hoses into an American flag. They say it took some time, work and effort. "It was tedious," says Kyle. "A struggle," Amelia adds. DEADLINE Related: 8 Surprising Facts About The World Trade Center's Construction In early 1962, when the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officially authorized a plan to build the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, it came just months after President John F. Kennedy announced the U.S. goal of sending astronauts to the moon. The vision for the seven-building complex—which would cost an estimated $470 million (more than $4 billion in today's dollars) and include the two tallest buildings in the world—embodied that same brand of American optimism and ambition. The twin 110-story towers at the heart of the World Trade Center were designed to surpass New York's iconic Empire State Building—then the world's tallest building. Building the new towers would marshal unprecedented levels of design innovation, engineering prowess—and breathtaking risk. THE HISTORY CHANNEL Multiple fire fatality tragedy at child care home changed Pennsylvania law; some say more must be done Two years ago, the city of Erie was devastated after an overnight fire claimed the lives of five children at a family child care home. The tragedy on Aug. 11, 2019, has not been forgotten. For those who witnessed the scene at the Harris Family Day Care, the horror of seeing a parent's worst nightmare come true remains etched in their minds. All of the victims were under 9 years old: La'Myhia Jones, 8; Luther Jones Jr., 6; Ava Jones, 4; and Jaydan Augustyniak, 9 months, all siblings, and 2-year-old Dalvin Pacley. Three victims were the children of a volunteer firefighter who was responding to another blaze at the time of the fire. The fire served as a wake-up call to many. NHTSA says it has identified 11 crashes since 2018 in which Teslas on Autopilot or Traffic Aware Cruise Control have hit vehicles at scenes where first responders have used flashing lights, flares, an illuminated arrow board or cones warning of hazards.
