Chicago firefighter dies days after battling fire in Belmont Cragin neighborhood The small neighborhood firehouse for Engine 94 was quiet all Tuesday night, with bunting over the door and flags at half-staff. It was a tragic day for the team, who lost one of their own, five days after a deadly apartment fire. "We ask that everyone keep the family in their prayers," Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Merritt said. "It's tough to lose a loved one under any circumstances — especially hard during the holiday season, which should be a time of celebration." There was a long procession to escort Firefighter Mashawn Plummer from where he was being treated at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Five days after fire broke out at an apartment building on North Marmora in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood, Plummer succumbed to his injuries. His mother tried rescue to boy from the second-floor room where a small fire started, but was unable to and escaped with burns to her body, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. The child was identified by family as Ace Jackson. He would have turned 3-years-old in January. According to the boy's uncle, Jackson was smart and articulate. He was into reading, writing, Cocomelon Nursery Rhymes and Spider-Man. Firefighters responded to the fire around 11:30 a.m. in the 12200 block of South Lafayette Avenue, officials said. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO Hero down, flags up: 500 flags to honor fallen veteran and fire chief in Tremont A group is raising 500 flags on Sunday to honor a former Tremont fire chief and army veteran. A firefighter for 50 years, Alan Sanders died on Dec. 12 from COPD and heart congestion. He was 82 years old. "We're gonna really miss him, [he was] an integral part of Tremont," said Tremont resident and Vietnam veteran Rick Otey. Otey said the group will plant 500 American flags on Sunday along the Sanders' funeral procession line starting from Tremont City Park. The funeral is on Tuesday at 11 A.M. He said the flag raising is a way to honor Sanders' many contributions to the Tremont community. "Everybody will remember Al, just because he was around the community so much. Anything that was going on in the community, Al was involved in it," Otey said. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Peoria Fire Department suspends service for Engine Company 2 for four days this week For four days this week, the Peoria Fire Department said it'll temporarily suspend service to Engine Company 2, which is out of Station #8 located on Hurlburt Street. Leaders said fire staff have been affected by COVID-19, leaving the station empty-handed. Council Member for District 1 Denise Jackson said, "Some of what has transpired is a direct result of firefighters being impacted by COVID. Some of them having contracted it, and others having been exposed to people who have COVID." The temporary suspension runs from Dec. 22-25, but Battalion Chief Jim Bachman said there are no guarantees that the time frame will not expand. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Driver sentenced in crash that killed Swansea firefighter A driver was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison for crashing into and killing an Illinois firefighter while fleeing from police in the St. Louis area. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 24-year-old Nicholas Washington was sentenced after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter and felony resisting arrest. A St. Louis County officer tried to stop Washington on April 4, 2019, but "disengaged" and turned off his lights after the Chevrolet Camaro sped away, officials said when they charged Washington. Prosecutors said the Camaro reached speeds of more than 90 mph before striking Brett Korves' car as he tried to turn left. The 30-year-old married father of a toddler was a paid on-call firefighter for the Swansea Fire Department. QUAD-CITIES ONLINE: DISPATCH-ARGUS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

House destroyed in New York fire PHOTOS: A vacant house has been destroyed in a fire on the south side of Syracuse early Wednesday morning. Emergency crews were dispatched at 3:00 a.m. to the house on Glenwood Avenue near Craddock Street. When firefighters arrived, the fire was already fully involved and it was too dangerous for firefighters to enter the house, according to the Syracuse Fire Department. A few minutes into firefighting operations, the structure collapsed, according to fire officials. One neighboring home sustained damage as a result of the fire, the Syracuse Fire Department said. One firefighter required medical attention due to minor burns, fire officials said. The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation. CNY CENTRAL Firefighters help Kentucky ‘brothers and sisters' after storms When Mat Post asked himself, "What can we do as a community to help the tornado victims?" his fellow volunteer firefighters answered the call with enough donations of turn out gear, hoses and serviceable fire equipment to fill three trailers. Along with the apparatus, the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Company decided to donate an entire fire truck, Engine 12. Within a couple of days of putting out the word for donations, which came in from area fire companies, a crew of volunteers was ready to set out to Mayfield, Kentucky, to present the Mayfield-Graves County Fire and Rescue with nearly $2 million worth of gear. The fire company in Kentucky lost everything, including their station house, in the recent tornados. SUN GAZETTE VIDEO: Georgia firefighters rescue man who fell two-stories into air vent Atlanta firefighters had to perform a vertical rescue after a grate gave way and let a man fall down an air shaft, officials said. It happened around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at One Coca-Cola Plaza. Atlanta fire Rescue said the person had fallen about 15 to 20 feet into the air shaft from above. Firefighters determined the best way to rescue the man was to pull him up back through the now open-air vent. When firefighters made contact with him in the vent, he was alert, conscious, and breathing. Crews then worked to secure him to a stretcher and then hoist him up the nearly two stories to the surface. About 40 firefighters in all were needed for the complex operation. The man appeared to have suffered a left injury and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. WAGA-TV FOX 5 ATLANTA Report details potential issue with door latch when Kansas firefighter fell out of truck, sustaining severe head injury KSHB 41 News first obtained a report that details what happened when a Kansas City, Kansas firefighter was injured in an accident on Dec. 12. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department provided the report. The fire department is still finishing up its own investigation, per a spokesperson. Pumper 17 was heading to a grocery store around 10:45 a.m. that Sunday. According to the report, the truck was turning left onto Shawnee Drive from 47th Street when the front passenger door opened and the occupant fell out, hitting his head on the pavement. The firefighter, who is 48 years-old, sustained a severe head trauma injury and was taken to the hospital. The report indicates the fire truck was sitting at a red light before turning, so the truck could not have been moving very fast when the door came open. KSHB-TV NBC 41 KANSAS CITY Omicron symptoms: What we know about illness caused by the new variant The dizzying speed of omicron's spread has left Americans questioning much of what they know about Covid-19, especially on the cusp of holiday travel. "This is hitting us at a very inopportune time," said Dr. Katherine Poehling, an infectious disease specialist and vaccinologist at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in North Carolina. Though much remains unknown about omicron, experts are beginning to understand more about the variant and how it affects people who are vaccinated, unvaccinated or who have had a previous Covid infection. For example, people who are exposed to omicron appear to get sick faster and may have symptoms that are different than those of other variants. NBC NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
