Chicago Fire Department's icebreaking boat makes its way down Chicago River VIDEO: With a big winter storm headed our way, and temperatures set to plunge once again, one of Chicago's favorite winter traditions is well underway. The Chicago Fire Department's icebreaking boat made its way down the Chicago River Tuesday afternoon, tearing through thick sheets of ice. It's one of the most spectacular sights Chicago has to offer. But the first thing you notice is the noise. Grinding, crushing and occasionally popping, sheets of ice fracture into little jigsaw puzzle pieces under the massive weight of the Christopher Wheatley. "It's designed as an icebreaker. It can cut up to almost 15 inches of ice going through it," said Jason Lach, Deputy District Chief of the fire department's Marine and Dive unit. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO Kendall County Sheriff's Deputies Help Rescue Two Women Trapped In Montgomery House Fire Kendall County Sheriff's deputies helped rescue two women who were trapped and had to jump to safety from a house fire on Monday. Around 12:50 a.m. Monday, Montgomery Police and the Oswego Fire Protection District responded to a fire in the 200 block of Williamsburg Court in Montgomery, about 45 miles southwest of Chicago, according to the Kendall County Sheriff's Office. Two Kendall County Sheriff' deputies heard calls for help from inside the home and saw two women calling out from a second-floor window. The deputies were able to catch the victims as they jumped to safety from the burning home. More than a dozen agencies across Adams and Pike counties and Marion County in Mo. came to support the district as they said goodbye to Chief Gary Frye. Frye, who passed away on Jan. 26, served with the fire district for 46 years, the last 16 as chief. "It's like losing a member of your family," said A.J House, a volunteer firefighter and board member for the district. House said Frye was an instrumental part in the district now doing emergency medical response calls and having the equipment and training for those calls. Visitation for Frye was held Monday night, and to ensure firefighters that served under him could attend, Tri-Township Fire Department sent a truck and crew to Payson. QUINCY HERALD-WHIG Female Carbondale teens can now get hands-on firefighter shadowing experience Young girls of Carbondale High School have a chance to get hands-on firefighter training this March, according to Carbondale Firefighter Abby Burnham. "We know it can be intimidating as young girls, and even women, to walk into a male-dominated field," Burnham said. "We chose to start the program this coming March because March is International Women's Month. We feel and hope that this will encourage girls in the Carbondale community, and (hopefully) eventually the surrounding region, to get a unique opportunity to ask women questions about working in the fire service and possibly pursuing a career of their own." THE SOUTHERN ILLINOISAN - METERED SITE Peoria house fire called an arson Peoria Fire officials say arson was the cause of a late-morning house fire in South Peoria. Crews were called the the home on South Shelly, near Shelly and Antionette, just after 10 a.m. Tuesday and say the back already was fully engulfed in flames. The fire was brought under control in 40 minutes, but additional crews had to be called in to make what they called a "defensive attack". They stayed on scene for three hours. The fire also spread to another building next door that had to be taken care of. No one was hurt, and two people inside the home were given assistance by the Red Cross. The house is a total loss. WMBD-AM 1470 PEORIA Dog rescued from frigid Lake Michigan by Chicago Fire Department divers, police say Rescue crews pulled a dog from a frigid Lake Michigan near the city's Streeterville neighborhood on Tuesday morning. According to Chicago police, the dog's owner was walking near the 600 block of North Lake Shore Drive at around 10:13 a.m. when the dog ran off. The 7-year-old Alaskan Klee Kai named Pepper then slipped and landed on ice drift about 500 feet out from the shore, according to the Chicago Fire Department. CFD divers who happened to be conducting routine drills received the call and were able to get out to the dog and pull it to safety. Pepper was taken to an emergency vet clinic in good condition, police said. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Video Shows Fire on Subway Train in New York After Lit Suitcase Rolled on With Riders Aboard Police are searching for the person who lit a suitcase on fire and then rolled it onto a subway train with people on board — the second fire in as many days along the same train line. The fire onboard a northbound 1 train Friday was captured on video. A witness said he realized something was wrong when he heard someone yell "smoke" just after the train had pulled into the 18th Street station around 10 a.m. "It looked like someone lit, whether accidentally or on purpose, a piece of rolling luggage on fire, and that had melted into the seats. And that in turn created a bigger fire," said Brendan Cochrane. "All you can do is stand there or call for help. You can't put out the fire because you don't have anything to put out the fire with. That's the thing that's frustrating." WLWT-TV NBC 5 CINCINNATI Fire and Ice: See a frozen Massachusetts firefighter after battling brutal conditions PHOTO: Firefighters in Fall River are being recognized for their extraordinary work at a Saturday house fire, while facing brutal weather conditions. In a Facebook post, Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan praised the fire crews. "They battled some really tough conditions at a house fire on Irving St. With lot of elements working against them, including the parking, wind, cold and size of the fire, they really did a tremendous job." One image in particular captured the conditions crews faced. The Fall River Reporter posted the image taken by Bobby Forand of Fall River Fire Department. You can see an ice-encrusted firefighter - his helmet, turnout gear, and mustache - frozen solid. Mayor Coogan says firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to surrounding homes. One minor injury was reported, according to the mayor. WFXT-TV FOX 25 BOSTON ‘Saddened and disheartened': In 2021, COVID a factor for all Wisconsin firefighter line-of-duty deaths VIDEO: Across Wisconsin, firefighters have been particularly susceptible to dying of COVID-19–even moreso than their law enforcement first responder counterparts. In 2021, all six of Wisconsin's line of duty deaths for firefighters and emergency medical service personnel were a result of COVID-19 complications, according to new data released to News 3 Now. At least eleven have died since the start of the pandemic. "Every firefighter in the world wants to be part of the solution, and not part of the problem," Chris Klahn said, who works for the Montello Fire Department and sits on the board of directors for the Wisconsin State Firefighter Association. "This pandemic has just been a struggle to try to keep ourselves healthy, our families healthy, and still respond to those calls for service." WISC-TV CBS 3 MADISON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
