2 children hurt in fire at Edgewood Apartments in West Peoria PHOTOS: Two children jumped to escape the fire that shot through the roof of the Edgewood Apartments, said the West Peoria fire chief. Neighbors made a "catch basin" to catch the youngsters, who may have suffered first degree burns from the fire but did they did not suffer further injuries from their leap to safety, said Fire Chief Terry Schadt. The chief said two adults were rescued using a ladder. The fire displaced 20 to 30 people, according to Schadt. Part of the building collapsed, Schadt said. Twice while fighting the fire, the chief said firefighters ran out of water. He said pipes on the hill where the building is located were too small. Some brush in back of the building caught fire, but the chief said there is not enough water to put out that fire. VIDEO: Massive fire at apartment complex construction site in Las Vegas PHOTOS: Dozens of Clark County Fire Department units responded on Tuesday afternoon after a large fire broke out at an apartment complex under construction in the southwest Las Vegas Valley at approximately 4:29 p.m. CCFD reported at least 20 units responded to a two-alarm fire on the 8000 block of W. Maule Ave., with more on the way. Upon arrival, the Battalion Chief called a 2nd alarm due to the amount of fire at the location. As of 11 p.m., crews were still battling the fire and trying to limit exposures to surrounding properties. Witnesses told FOX5 they heard loud popping sounds like a car backfiring or someone throwing boards off the roof when it started. Part of the 215 was shut down as smoke covered the roadway. High winds fueled the fire. No injuries were reported to construction crews on site when the fire broke out. KVVU-TV FOX 5 HENDERSON Mississippi Senate honors the state's first African American fire chief A pioneering firefighter is getting some overdue recognition. The Mississippi Senate and the City of Starkville have honored former Starkville fire Chief Willie Johnson with a resolution from the state. Johnson was the first African American fire chief in the state of Mississippi. Johnson's legacy began in 1988 when he took on the unprecedented role. He said the experience was worth the challenge. "It was very challenging with the personnel, both black and white," he said. "To be honest, those challenges were great to try and make everything balance out equally and evenly and that's the way I was going to promote and manage the department". His influence sparked an interest in the fire and rescue field in the state's African American community. Current Starkville Fire Chief Charles Yarbrough said his impact hit close to home. WCBI-TV CBS 4 COLUMBUS Firemen or Firefighter? A Push For The Latter is Making Waves This Week in Maryland With the Maryland State Firemen's Association Convention in town, a possible name change is looming. Some feel a simple change to 'Firefighter' would be more inclusive for women. The MSFA said this is not the first time they have heard this proposal and that a name change is 100% on the table this year. It would take a hefty vote, but several woman firefighters here on the Eastern Shore are not so sure it's even necessary. Sarah Townsend of Allen holds a position very few women on the Eastern Shore do. Fire Chief. It is through that role Townsend takes her stance on the possible name change. "As a woman chief myself, it does not impact me that it's called the firemen's association," said Townsend. When the fire whistle blows, it's not about whether we're called firemen, firefighters, firewoman, it's just about whether we can get there and do our job." WKMG-TV CBS 6 ORLANDO How E-Bike Battery Fires Became a Deadly Crisis in New York City His girlfriend told him not to buy the electric scooter. But Alfonso Villa Muñoz was intrigued. He was working in a Brooklyn bodega last August when a delivery man said he knew someone selling one for $700. Mr. Muñoz said yes. The scooter was cherry red with the number 7 on the front. Under the seat was an extra-large lithium ion battery. When it needed charging, Mr. Muñoz would remove the battery from the scooter and use both hands to lug it up to the couple's third-floor apartment in College Point, Queens. A month later, the battery exploded in the living room, unleashing flames that engulfed the apartment. Mr. Muñoz screamed for their 8-year-old daughter, Stephanie, who was asleep. He could not breach the wall of black smoke to get to her. Stephanie died from smoke inhalation. NEW YORK TIMES - METERED SITE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
