'It's like a blast furnace': Rock Island fire damages three homes; one injured VIDEO/PHOTOS: An afternoon fire Tuesday damaged three Rock Island homes, at least two of them heavily, and injured at least one person. Rock Island firefighters were called about 1 p.m. for a structure fire in the 800 block of 22nd Street, Rock Island Fire Chief Jeff Yerkey said. "When crews arrived they found heavy fire coming from 845 (22nd St.)," which began to spread to 843 22nd St., Yerkey said. Smoke from the fire could be seen from Davenport. "It's like a blast furnace," a responding firefighter could be heard saying over the radio at one point. The fire remains under investigation. THE DISPATCH ARGUS Springfield home a total loss after fire A two-story home in Springfield is a total loss after a fire early Wednesday morning. It happened at 1328 North Grand Avenue East just before 3 a.m. Firefighters arriving on the scene could already see smoke and fire coming from the wood-framed home. We're told the fire extensively damaged the inside of the home and was traveling through empty spaces. Crews had to leave the inside of the home after finding the stairs were burned out, floors were unstable, and visibility became low. Once the fire was reduced to a safer level crews were able to go back inside and continue fighting the flames. Springfield Fire Chief Brandon Blough says the home was vacant at the time of the fire. WICS/WRSP-TV ABC 20 SPRINGFIELD Rollover Crash with Fire on Route 120 Just West of I-94 in Waukegan Police, firefighters and paramedics from Waukegan responded about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2022 to a report of a rollover crash with fire and injuries on Route 120 (Belvidere Road) and River Road at the entrance to the River Glen subdivision in Waukegan. Police and firefighters on arrival discovered one passenger vehicle rolled on a side and burning, and another passenger vehicle with severe front end damage. Waukegan Fire Department firefighters quickly extinguished the vehicle fire involving the rolled over vehicle, and immediately treated and transported two people to a nearby hospital. The crash is under investigation with an extended on-scene investigation still underway at 6:25 p.m. THE CARDINAL Tinley Park Fire Department Introduces Chaplain Program The Tinley Park Fire Department may soon have access to a chaplain to serve firefighters' religious and spiritual needs during rough days on the job, Fire Chief Steve Klotz told the village board Tuesday. Klotz told Patch the Fire Department Chaplain Program has been on his mind since he began with the department. While programs are in place to connect firefighters to others in need of someone to lean on, Klotz said many firefighters expressed they often want someone outside of the department entirely to reach out to. "We can fit them with the best gear, the best materials but based on the stress, emotional tension and extreme physical conditions our firefighters are seeing every day the one thing we're not addressing is the emotional stress part of the job," Klotz said Tuesday. TINLEY PARK PATCH Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois promote Hometown Heroes cookie campaign Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois is offering a Hometown Heroes program where local heroes can receive Girl Scout Cookies. Local Girl Scouts chose organizations to celebrate with the gift of girl Scout Cookies: hospital workers, first responders, veterans, school staff, food banks and others making a difference. Hometown Heroes gives customers the opportunity to support their local Girl Scouts as well as local heroes. "Through Hometown Heroes, customers can purchase Girl Scout Cookies for those who give so much to the people in our communities – like firefighters, nursing homes, and police officers," said Katie Grayling, Senior Manager of Product Programs. VIDEO: Home explodes in Missouri – No injuries reported A home exploded on Millers Court Tuesday afternoon in O'Fallon, Missouri. The St. Charles Ambulance District says that there are no injuries. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. Initial reports indicate that the fire department was called to the scene for a gas leak. First responders have the fire under control. There is not much remaining of the home. Two vehicles are burned up in what remains of the garage. The rest of the structure has been reduced to rubble. A contractor working in the area struck a gas line this afternoon, according to a statement from Spire. Workers immediately contacted Spire and the fire department. The fire department then evacuated homes in the area. Spire crews vented the gas out of the homes near the house that exploded. There are currently 19 homes without service in the neighborhood. It will take 4 to 6 hours to fix the line and return service to the homes. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS City council confirms appointment of first woman to serve as chief in California fire department's 136-year history The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to confirm the appointment of Deputy Chief Kristin Crowley who will become the first woman to lead the Los Angeles Fire Department. The appointment would be effective March 26, when Chief Ralph Terrazas is scheduled to retire. "I think it's so fitting for this nomination to come to council today, on the first day of Women's History Month,'' Council President Nury Martinez said. "Our city's fire department has gone 136 years without a woman in its highest office and today we're going to finally be able to turn the page.'' Crowley spoke before Tuesday's council vote. "I'm truly honored to be considered the nominee for the next fire chief of the Los Angeles city fire department and I am humbled and proud to have earned the opportunity to represent each and every one of our 3,779-strong civilian and sworn personnel of our department,'' Crowley told council members. KNBC-TV NBC 4 LOS ANGELES 47 years ago, ‘largest arson case' in country rocked a Connecticut city PHOTOS: Fire officials this week took to social media to remember a firebombing at a local mattress factory that the FBI classified at the time as the "largest arson case" nationwide. Tuesday marked 47 years since an enormous blaze ripped through the B.F. Goodrich Sponge Rubber mattress factory — now, the site of the city's riverwalk — in one of the biggest industrial arson cases to hit the nation. Fire officials from Shelton's Echo Hose Hook and Ladder Co. 1 said the fire was set by the factory owners in an effort to collect insurance money. About 700 firefighters from Shelton and surrounding areas battled the 200-foot flames for an estimated eight hours until the blaze was under control on the morning of March 2, 1975. "The FBI labeled it the largest arson case and peacetime bombing in the country," fire officials said Tuesday. NEW HAVEN REGISTER Colorado fire department debuts new emergency response system for 911 calls As of Tuesday, some Colorado Springs residents may hear something different when they call 911. "A unit will respond when a unit is available," call takers will say to residents in the south part of town who contact the emergency service for non-emergency situations — for example, when symptoms indicate the flu, a sprained ankle or a fractured hip. "This will be somewhat of a shift for the community," said Jayme McConnellogue, deputy chief of operations for the Colorado Springs Fire Department. Instead of immediately dispatching an ambulance, firetruck or other substantial vehicle, new Community Medicine Response Units — in medically outfitted SUVs that are on back order — will arrive at the scene. Emergency medical technicians will render aid and determine the best course of action, Fire Department officials said Tuesday, while announcing the start of the program at the agency's headquarters on Printers Parkway. THE GAZETTE - METERED SITE Ohio fire station undergoing emergency masonry project to avoid ‘catastrophic failure' Alarm of a different kind is what the Parma Heights Fire Department discovered late last year leading to emergency construction work at the Pearl Road fire station. "The fire station was inspected by a qualified construction company," Parma Heights Fire Chief Matt Bernard said. "It was under their recommendation that the building's structural integrity needed to be addressed before a catastrophic failure." Parma Heights City Council President Tom Rounds added, "The need for repair can't be ignored so appropriate money has been moved in the budget to address this situation." The winning bid for the estimated $80,900 masonry project, which includes the shoring and protection of the northern and southern overhead doors, went to Grunwell-Cashero.
