"Last night we were standing out and there were bricks falling down, falling down out of the sky," said a man who lives at the home heavily damaged by the bricks. "What do you do? WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO Harrisburg Fire Department looking to extend its ambulance services Harrisburg firefighters are looking at how they can better help locals. Their department wants to add to their emergency response unit. "When you have one service that's covering the whole county and possibly another county, it's a shortfall," said John Gunning, Harrisburg Fire Chief. Almost two years ago, Harrisburg fire chief John Gunning worked to do something about that shortfall. "Currently, there is one ambulance service in the city of Harrisburg," said Gunning. "They run all the primary calls." In 2021, officials at the Harrisburg Fire Department started out as first responders. "We ran that doing medical assistance and we felt like there was a need for an additional ambulance for our community to cover a lot of backlogs," said Gunning. Firefighters and city officials unveiled a new fire truck on Tuesday that will be used to respond to any emergencies at the McAllen International Airport. The fire department celebrated the acquirement of the E-ONE apparatus during a traditional "push-back" ceremony at the McAllen fire substation #4. "It's a tradition for the fire department going back to the 1800s in which the fire engines at the time were pulled by horses," said Interim Fire Chief Juan Gloria. "With that in mind, whenever a new apparatus arrived to a fire house, the firefighters themselves would bring the truck to the front of the fire station — they would clean it, they would wash it and, by hand, they would push it back inside the quarters to put it in service and that is what we're going to replicate today." The new truck is equipped with a 1,500 gallon on-board water tank and a high extendable reach turret, or H.E.R.T., piercing tip. Firefighters Pamela Saunders-Isaac, Licole McKinney, Jessica Jackson, and Elizabeth McCormick make up the historical team of women leading Engine 26 in North City. "When that bell ring, we come together, and we get the job done," said Fire Private Pamela Saunders-Isaac. "It's phenomenal. It's something that I've never foreseen to come," Acting Fire Capt. Licole McKinney says. Fire Private Elizabeth McCormick is a 6-year veteran and is one of two female firefighters hired over the last 15 years. "I feel super honored and privileged to work for what I believe is the greatest department in the world," said McCormick. "I think there's obviously more work to be done when it comes in the recruitment, hiring and retention of firefighters in general but especially female firefighters." KMOV-TV CBS/MYNETWORKTV 4 ST. LOUIS An emerging fungal threat spread at an alarming rate in US health care facilities, study says Clinical cases of Candida auris, an emerging fungus considered an urgent threat, nearly doubled in 2021, according to new data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There was also a tripling of the number of cases resistant to echinocandins, the first-line treatment for Candida auris infections. The research, published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, evaluated cases of Candida auris reported to the CDC from 2016 – the year in which cases were first reported in the US – to 2021. The study authors found that clinical cases increased each year, rising from 53 in 2016 to 330 in 2018 and then skyrocketing from 476 in 2019 to 1,471 in 2021. Cases of Candida auris also expanded geographically. . Although it was initially confined mostly to the New York City and Chicago areas, Candida auris is now present in more than half of US states. Between 2019 and 2021, 17 states identified their first cases. CNN HEALTH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
