Park Ridge apartment building fire leaves 5 hurt, including firefighter VIDEO: Firefighters spent hours on the scene of an apartment building fire Tuesday night into Wednesday morning in Park Ridge. Four residents and one firefighter were hurt, and the building sustained significant damage. Park Ridge fire officials said four people suffered smoke inhalation and had non-life threatening injuries. At least one person remained in the hospital Wednesday morning, and his or her condition is unknown. One firefighter was also taken to the hospital with a leg injury but has since been released. Fire crews responded just before 11 p.m. to Bristol Court the 200-block of Thames Parkway. As they were on the way, neighbors said there were some people trapped on the top floor, and large flames could be seen blowing out of a window in a top-floor unit. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Person found dead after structure fire at mobile home park in Adams County A person was found dead after a structure fire at a mobile home park in Quincy Tuesday. Adams County Sheriff Rich Wagner said in a news release around 5 p.m., Adams County Sheriff's deputies were called to help the Tri-Township Fire Department as they responded to a fire in the Rancho Vista Estates Mobile Home Park at 3737 N. 24th Street in Quincy. Wagner said when deputies got there, they found out that an 81-year-old, the resident of the mobile home, had been found dead. However, he has not yet released the name of the person. He did not provide any more information about the fire or the death. The Adams County Sheriffs Office was assisted by the Tri-Township Fire Department, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, and the Adams County Coroners Office. WGEM-TV NBC 10 QUINCY Inspired by teachers, Peoria firefighters aim to fill fire trucks with much-needed school supplies It's still spring, but there's a big effort underway to collect school supplies for students and their teachers long before they return to the classrooms for the fall semester. The Fill the Fire Truck campaign is run by Peoria's African American Firefighters Association and the Tri-County Urban League. The goal is to fill up the fire trucks with supplies, perhaps giving teachers one less thing to worry about when the new school year starts. Firefighters are particularly interested in helping teachers because they have had such a big influence. "I have so many, like from Richwoods and Loucks and at Franklin, that I actually came from...and we have so many Peoria graduates here," said Scott Howard, who is the association's secretary and member of Peoria Firefighters Local 50. WEEK-TV NBC/ABC/CW+ 25 PEORIA Fire reported at Casey's in Forsyth Firefighters were called out to battle a fire at the Casey's in Forsyth early Tuesday morning. The call came in around 2:30 a.m. Firefighters saw smoke coming from the vents in the roof. The door handle was hot to the touch. Light fire was found in the kitchen area, but crews were able to quickly extinguish it. The Hickory Point Fire Protection District told WAND there was extensive smoke damage throughout the store, and the interior will most likely have to be redone. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Why do Reno fire investigators prosecute more cases than the national average? VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Reno Fire Department fights hundreds of fires each year. There's a team focused on the dozens of fires that are intentionally set. Arson cases are the least often, least effectively prosecuted criminal offenses in America even though they are the largest dollar loss crime, exceeding burglaries, thefts and armed robberies combined, according to the interFire website. Out of the 250 to 300 fires in Reno each year, about 50 of them are arson. Nationally, the prosecution rate is between 1% and 3% for arson fires. Tray Palmer, the fire marshal for the Reno Fire Department said Reno has a 20% prosecution rate. He says there's a reason the city's rates are higher. The four arson investigators are certified police officers meaning they carry guns and have the ability to make arrests. "They're police officers as well as fire inspectors," said Palmer. KRNV-DT NBC 4 RENO ‘My Heart Is Broken'; 19 Children, 2 Adults Killed in Texas School Shooting VIDEO: An 18-year-old gunman killed 19 children and two teachers as he went from classroom to classroom at a Texas elementary school, officials said, adding to a gruesome, yearslong series of mass killings at churches, schools and stores. The gunman, armed with an "AR-style rifle," was also killed when law enforcement confronted him at Robb Elementary School. Tuesday's assault at a grade school in the heavily Latino town of Uvalde was the deadliest shooting at a U.S. school since a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012. Hours after the attack, families were still awaiting word on their children. At the town civic center where some gathered, the silence was broken repeatedly by screams and wailing. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Related: 27 school shootings have taken place in the US so far this year Duke University Scientists: Silicone Wristbands Track Firefighters' Exposure to Harmful Chemicals Firefighters have a 9 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14 percent higher risk of dying from the disease than the general adult U.S. population, according to studies by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and other agencies. Recent research by scientists at Duke University could give doctors and public health officials a new tool for tracking firefighters' exposures to cancer-causing chemicals and determining where and when the risks might be greatest. The cool thing is, it's not some expensive high-tech gadget. It's just a silicone wristband, purchased in bulk for about $1 apiece. "It turns out that ordinary silicone wristbands, like the ones sold in stores, absorb the semi-volatile organic compounds you're exposed to while you're out in the world," said Jessica Levasseur, a PhD student at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment, who led the study.
