Honoring the fallen in a solemn ceremony in Peoria Three rings of a bell symbolize the beginning duty, and they also symbolize the end of duty for firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty in Peoria since the 1800s. The bell was sounded during an annual memorial service on Tuesday in Downtown Peoria, in what the fire department calls "one of our most solemn events." A plaque honoring fallen first responders displays the name of 16 firefighters who've lost their lives since 1875. Their names were read along with seven other firefighters who passed away after their retirement. "By remembering the people that came before us and those that passed away in the line of service and over the past year show us exactly that what we're doing is bigger than ourselves every day," says Tom Stimeling, a 16-year veteran and Captain of the Peoria Fire Department and the Honor Guard Commander. WEEK-TV NBC 25 PEORIA Fire leads to ‘extensive damage' at Sky Zone in Fairview Heights Fire crews responded to a situation Tuesday afternoon at the SkyZone in Fairview Heights. The Sky Zone is located in the 10000 block of Lincoln Trail. The fire happened just after 3 p.m. Tuesday. When crews arrived to the building, most of the fire had already been extinguished by a fire suppression system. Investigators say the fire and smoke caused "extensive damage" to the building, which will now be closed for an undisclosed amount of time. Everyone inside the building evacuated in a timely manner and no injuries were reported from the fire. Investigators say one neighboring business, Ruler Foods, sustained some smoke damage and will also be closed for an unknown length of time. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. SkyFOX, powered by Bommarito Automotive Group, briefly surveyed the area. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS Pekin Fire Department mourns loss of recently-retired firefighter The Pekin Fire Department has announced the death of one of their own after a battle with cancer. A release from Fire Chief Trent Reeise says Jami Lusher, a 26-year veteran and recently retired from the department, died Monday surrounded by his family. The Pekin Fire Department regrets to announce that recently retired Engineer Jami Lusher, a 26-year veteran of the department, passed away on October 17, 2022, surrounded by his family after a long hard-fought battle with cancer. The Pekin Fire Department would like to extend our deepest condolences to Jami's family. Jami was known in the department for being an aggressive firefighter and a patient mentor to new firefighters. Jami always served his community with a humble pride and honor. He will be greatly missed by his brother firefighters. WEEK-TV NBC 25 PEORIA $3.46M maximum price set for design and construction of new East Peoria fire station East Peoria's new fire station will cost no more than 3 point 4 million dollars. That's per a maximum price agreement the city struck with River City Construction for the new fire station on Centennial Drive, near Illinois Central College. Dan Decker is an East Peoria commissioner and an assistant chief with the fire department. "This station is not only needed now. It's going to continue to be needed for many years," Decker said. "That location is excellent, and we don't see a decrease in calls anytime soon." Discussions for a new fire station in the area began more than 30 years ago. Several nursing homes in the area generate a high volume of calls for East Peoria first responders. The nearest fire station is located below the bluff, creating extra wear-and-tear on the fire vehicles moving up and downhill regularly. WCBU-FM 89.9 PEORIA Several fire departments respond to house fire in Washington Park Emergency crews were on the scene of a house fire in Washington Park early Wednesday morning. According to reports, the fire started on the 5700 block of Westmoreland Place around 4:40 a.m. Several crews from multiple departments were called to help with the fire, as flames covered the majority of the building and were spreading to nearby trees. The fire started in the attic of the home, and reignited several times. Neighbors shared that the family that lives there are now checking out the damage. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS Peoria Fire Department getting two ‘pawsome' additions A couple of good boys are joining the Peoria Fire Department to aid with arson investigations. Two accelerant detection dogs were purchased using private donations from Blu Sky and Stanley Steemer. They will help arson investigators with fire investigations. Each dog is assigned to an investigator, who will also take care of him. Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger said the concept is similar to the use of K9s by police departments. In fact, the dogs are coming from the same North Carolina farm used by the Peoria Police Department. Sollberger said the dogs are a unique help that most fire departments don't have. "Their abilities to detect accelerants that are generally used for arson takes our ability, from an investigative standpoint, to a whole other level," he said. VIDEO: Man uses drone to help firefighters identify hotspots from massive Georgia apartment complex fire People driving through Midtown Tuesday could probably still smell the smoke from a massive fire that destroyed an apartment complex on Monday night. The fire started in the Peachtree Walk Apartments, and damaged a number of businesses on 12th Street. Firefighters were finally able to knock it down with some help from a drone pilot who helped them identify the hotspots. Fire investigators are back on scene assessing the damage and again, Fess Burgess was here to help. He started flying drones three years ago. "A lot of practice, a few crashes, it is risky," he said. He was flying in Midtown with some friends Monday night when they heard how fast the fire was spreading. "This drone here has thermal capabilities, so it can show hotspots, you can see what's hot and what's not," he said. WXIA-TV NBC 11 ATLANTA Remembering the 23rd Street Fire that killed 12 firefighters in New York PHOTOS: On Oct. 17, 1966, 12 firefighters were killed in what was the deadliest day for the New York City Fire Department until the 9/11 terror attacks. Two chiefs, two lieutenants and eight firefighters lost their lives as they tried to battle a fire at 22nd St. by entering a building on 23rd St. before it collapsed. The call came in at around 9:36 p.m. at an art dealer located at 7 East 22nd Street, off of Broadway. The four-story brownstone was so engulfed by smoke and heat that it became impossible to enter through the 22nd Street side of the building. While the dealer had stored highly flammable lacquer, paint and finished wood frames in the basement that fueled the fire, the cause was unknown, according to the NYFD. NEW YORK DAILY NEWS - METERED SITE New for firefighters: A guide for talking with doctors A newly published guide is intended to help firefighters talk with their health care provider about the unique health risks they face on the job. Developed by the National Volunteer Fire Council, the International Association of Fire Fighters, the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the First Responder Center for Excellence, the Provider's Guide to Firefighter Medical Evaluations details the physical challenges firefighters face and how they impact health. It also features research findings on the risks of cardiovascular disease, cancers, sleep disorders, lung disease and behavioral health. For instance, the guide lists 19 different types of cancers that firefighters are at increased risk of as a result of on-the-job exposures. They include bladder, lung, kidney and colon cancer. In addition, it lists 11 different carcinogens found in smoke. In June, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer officially classified firefighting as a carcinogenic profession. SAFETY AND HEALTH University tests new technology to help seniors during California's Great ShakeOut, future disasters What do you do when there's an earthquake? Drop, cover and hold on, says the Earthquake Country Alliance, a "public-private-grassroots" partnership made up of people, organizations and regional alliances geared around raising disaster preparedness in the face of earthquakes and tsunamis. Orange County residents may receive text alerts Thursday morning, encouraging them to do just that and take cover as part of the statewide Great California Shakeout. First staged in Southern California by the U.S. Geological Survey in 2008, it returns at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, when about 9.4 million people statewide will participate in the earthquake drill. Of that, an estimated 865,820 people in Orange County will take part. That includes about 5,000 childcare and preschools, 510,000 schools, 47,000 local government bodies and 6,000 senior facilities. DAILY PILOT - METERED SITE New fire rescue units hit the streets in Florida city The first of more planned advanced Critical Care Rescue Units are operating on Jacksonville's streets now, funded from Jacksonville's 2023 budget. Along with the usual advanced life-saving equipment when someone is injured in a fire, crash or other incident, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department's two new rescue units also carry high-level critical care medications like blood clot stabilizers and drugs to lower rapid heart rates. It also is the first time that blood and plasma for transfusions has been carried by paramedics, all specially trained to handle them as well as a ventilator, IV pump and other life-saving gear at a trauma scene or en route to a hospital. The new rescue units will be sent out to incidents where that added gear and paramedic training is really needed to save a life, Fire Chief Keith Powers said.
