| Charging Hoverboard Causes Fire; Smoke Detectors Save Sleeping Plainfield Family An early morning Labor Day fire caused severe damage and a pet perished. At approximately 1:55 a.m. on Monday, September 2, 2024, the Western Will County Communication Center (WESCOM) received a 911 call from a caller stating there was a smell of smoke in the home. The first arriving Plainfield Fire Protection District fire unit arrived within six minutes of the 911 call and found smoke coming from around the basement door. Firefighters quickly deployed a hose line and extinguished the fire that was contained to the basement. The family, who was asleep at the time, was alerted of the fire and were able to escape due to functioning smoke alarms in their home. While conducting a search of the home a family pet was located and perished as a result of the fire. WJOL-AM 1340 JOLIET Urbana fire leaves three apartments uninhabitable Three units of an Urbana apartment building were rendered uninhabitable by a fire Monday afternoon, resulting in several people being displaced. The fire happened in a three-story building in the area of Harding Avenue and Cottage Grove Avenue. Officials with the Urbana Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched at 2:19 p.m. and arrived within three minutes to find smoke and flames coming from a window on the second floor. "What I saw was flames coming out of a window. And then the paramedics came, came by to extinguish the fire," neighbor Champi Arrey said. "That was all that I really saw. And the bunch of people out there really into. It was really intense." After confirming a working fire, department officers were dispatched to the scene. | VIDEO: Stubborn multi-alarm fire burns through tire shop in New York A stubborn five-alarm fire burned for hours through a tire shop in Jamaica, Queens on Tuesday. Firefighters responded to 150-17 Liberty Ave. around 5:15 p.m. The fire started in the rear of a two-story tire shop where flames were seen billowing 20 feet into the air. Part of the building and roof collapsed. The fire was so hot that the tires inside the building melted, firefighters said. A resident said he felt the heat of the fire from across the street. The workers inside the building all got out safely, firefighters said. Firefighters were concerned about the fire spreading from the melting tires. The firefighters were knee deep in foam, which firefighters used to try and smother the fire. Firefighters at Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District are training up. Jordan Green is the Lieutenant Paramedic and leads operations. He says in the case that someone is stuck in a car, firefighters go through a specific process to safely get them out. "Stress is up for the patient. Stress levels are up for responders as well. That's a big part of why we do this," he said. They are gearing up for the World Rescue Challenge Competition. It's where firefighters from across the world meet up to see who does the best job --- in mock emergencies. They return back here, to Southwest Florida, with new knowledge to implement on the job. Though there have been several tests, Romeo is technically still undiagnosed, but his mother says they are labeling it cerebral palsy. She added that before he caught COVID, Romeo was able to feed himself and use his walker, but after that, things went downhill. "So far, no answers, but it is horrible seeing him going through the process of taking out the blood," Yesenia Pineda said. "But like sometimes I hope I get a relief to see maybe if there is a diagnosis, but if there is no diagnosis, then hopefully in the future, as his doctor says, that something might be discovered to have a diagnosis because there's a lot of tests that are not run because of the technology today."
