KQED - Local. Trusted. Essential. Donate Now

  Dear Friend,

We’ve been through a lot in Northern California, but the past few months are unprecedented.

The KQED team has been working 24/7 to bring you the latest news and information. We have tapped our statewide networks, expanded our coverage, answered thousands of questions and responded to the critical need for timely and accurate information.

Even as journalism is more important than ever, local news is one of the many casualties of the pandemic. Newspapers are shuttering, independent weeklies are going silent and layoffs abound. Journalism dedicated to facts, truth and reliability is endangered.

It’s clear to everyone at KQED that we can’t hold a traditional fundraiser, so we’ve made some drastic changes.

We decided to eliminate more than 80% of our on-air pledge drive. We will shrink our schedule from our typical two-week drive to only two days. In a typical pledge drive we raise over $1,500,000 to keep our vital programming on the air, and we still need to raise these critical funds.

It’s a risk. We need your help. We must raise 80% of our goal before the drive begins in order to be successful.

To help us jump start this effort, Craig Newmark Philanthropies has issued a generous dollar-for-dollar challenge grant of $100,000. The challenge begins this morning, April 21, and it’s crucial that we meet that goal in the next nine days.

Whether you decide to become a sustaining member, make a one-time gift or increase your sustaining membership, every dollar will help us meet this challenge. And all of it will go to keeping our service strong.

Like you, Craig Newmark believes in the vital importance of real journalism, journalism with no agenda other than to tell the truth.

Reliable, fact-based news and information are more important than ever. Please join me in supporting the indispensable journalism on KQED. -Craig Newmark

Please help us meet this $100,000 challenge grant from Craig Newmark Philanthropies. Every donation helps.

Thank you for your support of essential community journalism.
