Researchers in Indonesia in 2022 documented Rakus, a male orangutan, chewing up leaves and applying the paste to a wound on his face. The leaves were not part of Rakus’ usual diet and are also known by humans as a pain reliever. The discovery offers evidence that orangutans are able to identify and use pain-relieving plants.
