CIOs today have to be cut out to not just accept increased responsibilities that were tenuous at best years ago, but achieve beyond expectation across the board. Eric Johnson, CIO at technology specialist PagerDuty, says in today’s leading story the proactive stance toward business alignment is crucial for modern CIOs. “They’re driving digital transformation to deliver tangible business benefits,” he says, which is a long way from merely ensuring the phones and networks are working. But asking to step up to this greater role is one thing — having, or sourcing, the skills to meet increased expectations is something else entirely. Despite being tested to such a degree, though, CIOs are uniquely qualified to succeed. That’s according to Markus Schümmelfeder, global CIO at biopharmaceutical giant Boehringer Ingelheim. “The world is asking a lot from CIOs and you need to have a broad portfolio of skills to do your job well,” he says. “IT is one of the few business functions that has all the possibilities in hand to make things happen.” Something I’m sure you’d all agree with.
