Dans un monde abîmé par l’exploitation des ressources et des personnes, fracturé par les guerres, l’architecture peut agir en tant que force réparatrice. Fort de cette conviction, le Pavillon de l’Arsenal présente l’exposition « La Grande Réparation », projet itinérant, initié par ARCH+ en partenariat avec l’Akademie der Künste de Berlin, l’ETH Zürich et l’Université du Luxembourg, et dont l’ambition, devant le constat de l’impossible réconciliation entre croissance illimitée et écologie, est de proposer une nouvelle culture de l’architecture fondée sur la réparation. Du soin qu’apportent des travailleuses et travailleurs souvent invisibilisé•es à l’entretien des bâtiments, au choix politique de ne plus démolir, en passant par l’architecture comme outil de justice en temps de conflit, l’exposition questionne l’éthique des bâtisseuses et bâtisseurs aujourd’hui. Dans un temps d’urgence écologique et sociale, chaque acte de construire, de ne pas construire ou de construire autrement peut mener soit à l’utilisation de ressources destructrice pour la planète et ses êtres vivants, soit à une véritable réparation. C’est cette frontière qu’interroge l’exposition : comment, aujourd’hui, mener une architecture éthique ? Organisée selon sept thématiques, l’exposition donne de la visibilité aux processus de maintenance et d’entretien de l’architecture et de la ville. Elle examine le sujet à différentes échelles, allant des routines quotidiennes du travail de soin aux exemples de pratiques de construction qui cherchent à travailler avec le parc immobilier existant plutôt qu’à créer de nouveaux bâtiments. Au travers de vidéos, maquettes, installations, dessins originaux et prototypes, l’exposition présente plus de 20 démarches d’artistes et d’agences internationales, émergentes ou confirmées, dans lesquelles la réparation devient tangible en tant que nouveau paradigme de conception. La dimension européenne et mondiale du projet nous importe : confronté•es à de tels enjeux, la réponse ne peut être que collective et le dialogue entre institutions culturelles de différents pays est nécessaire. Les propositions inventées à Berlin, Marioupol ou Accra nourrissent le travail parisien, de même que Paris agit comme avant-garde d’une architecture plus écologique et sociale. Pensée comme réparation, l’architecture passe aussi à la portée de toutes et tous : l’échelle du soin dépasse le champ des professionnel•les et permet à chacune et chacun de réparer son environnement proche et les injustices observées. The great repair Exhibition produced by Pavillon de l'Arsenal and designed by ARCH+ in partnership with Akademie der Künste Berlin, Department of Architecture ETH Zürich and Master in Architecture University of Luxembourg.
In a world scarred by the exploitation of resources and people and torn apart by wars, architecture can serve as a reparative force. Fueled by this belief, Pavillon de l’Arsenal presents the exhibition “The Great Repair,” a traveling project initiated by ARCH+ in collaboration with Akademie der Künste in Berlin, ETH Zürich, and the University of Luxembourg. Its aim, in light of the stark realization of the irreconcilable conflict between unchecked growth and ecological balance, is to advocate for a new architectural ethos centered around repair.
From the care provided by often-marginalized workers in maintaining buildings, to the political decision to refrain from demolition, and to architecture as an instrument of justice in times of conflict, the exhibition challenges the ethical stance of contemporary builders. In a time of ecological and social emergency, every choice to build, not to build, or to build in a different way can either result in the destructive use of resources harming the planet and its denizens or to genuine repair. The exhibition seeks to explore the line between the two to better understand how to practice architecture ethically in today’s world.
The exhibition is structured around seven topics, shedding light on the processes related to the maintenance and upkeep of architecture and urban landscapes. It examines these themes at various scales, from the daily rituals of caretaking to examples of construction practices that prioritize working with existing structures rather than replacing them with new ones. Through videos, models, installations, original drawings, and prototypes, the exhibition showcases over twenty approaches from both emerging and established international artists and architectural firms that render repair tangible as a new design paradigm.
The European and global dimensions of the project are of paramount importance to us; when confronted with such challenges, the only viable response is a collective one, and dialogue between cultural institutions from different countries is therefore necessary. Proposals originating in Berlin, Mariupol, and Accra inform initiatives in Paris, just as Paris leads the way in advancing a more environmentally and socially conscious architecture.
When considered through the lens of repair, architecture also becomes accessible to everyone as the scale of care extends beyond the realm of professionals, allowing everyone to get involved in repairing their immediate surroundings and any injustices they observe there. Let’s repair!
