The European Union is actively supporting research in the Health Sector towards the ultimate goal: better health for all. The Sixth (2002-2006) and Seventh Framework Programmes for research (2007–2013) are a proof of the fact that the EU is result-oriented and it has at its centre the benefit of the citizens. Support continues also under Horizon 2020 (2014–2020) – the current EU framework programme for research and innovation. The European Union funds medical research across a number of key research areas: Antimicrobial drug resistance Drug resistance is a major obstacle in the treatment of infectious diseases worldwide. Brain research There is a need for considerable efforts in research, through funding and better coordination among European countries. Cancer A group of diseases characterised by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Cardiovascular diseases Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are one of Europe's largest health problems. Chronic diseases Chronic conditions are major causes of disability, ill-health, health-related retirement and premature death. Diabetes This disease, characterised by abnormal blood sugar levels, represents a growing threat to human health. Ebola The EU is boosting its investment in Ebola research aiming at further achieving life-changing results. Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases Research on EIDs has been included in the Commission Framework Programmes for Research since their very inception. Public Health Research Public health research will lead the way in providing evidence for the best health practices. HIV/AIDS The European Commission considers HIV/AIDS a top priority and has significantly invested in HIV/AIDS research. Human development and ageing Chronic conditions and diseases are major causes of disability, ill-health, health-related retirement and premature death. Malaria Malaria, a preventable and treatable disease, is one of the world's deadliest diseases. Rare diseases Rare diseases are life-threatening and chronically debilitating diseases. Tuberculosis M. tuberculosis is one of the most successful pathogens ever encountered and the EU has invested a total of € 118 million in 50 projects. Zika The EU is investing €45 million in research to fight outbreaks caused by emerging infections such as the Zika virus. |

News & Events Investment Plan for Europe- EIB finances modernisation of the Poznań Medical University The EIB loan will finance the design, construction and equipping of a new state-of-the-art medical simulations centre at the university. The investment also covers the construction of the new site of the Faculty of Pharmacy and its Centre for Innovative Pharmaceutical Technologies containing certified research laboratories. Their findings could enable doctors to prescribe certain drugs with greater confidence and strengthen EU efforts to tackle the growing problem of drug resistance. Investment Plan- First EU fund fully dedicated to broadband infrastructure to unlock at least EUR 1bn over 5 years Today, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Commission, together with the German KfW, the Italian Cassa depositi e prestiti and France’s Caisse des Dépôts, announced the first pooled EUR 420m for the Connecting Europe Broadband Fund to finance broadband network infrastructure across underserved areas in Europe. The Connecting Europe Broadband Fund, which is managed by Cube Infrastructure Managers, aims to pool around EUR 500m for guaranteeing broadband investments in order to mobilise at least EUR 1bn in investment over five years. |

A Digital Europe needs Digital Skills- best practices from around the EU There are so many ways in which we can foster digital skills among EU citizens. It is important that we share information on the many good practices across Europe, to see what is working well in one country and replicate it in others, adapting to the specific local needs and demands.
