Focus of the week: EU and the regions |

Regional policy targets EU regions and cities, boosting economic growth and improving quality of life through strategic investment. It is also an active form of solidarity which focuses support on the less developed regions. EU regional policy funding focuses on 4 priorities: research & innovation information & communication technologies making small and medium-sized businesses more competitive moving towards a low-carbon economy Regional policy delivers results. Between 2007 and 2012 it helped EU countries: create 769 000 jobs invest in 225 000 smaller businesses fund 72 000 research projects bring broadband coverage to 5 million more EU citizens quality of life in cities through 11 000 different projects improve Regional policy is delivered through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Cohesion Fund. National and regional authorities are responsible for managing the funds from day to day. These Managing Authorities select, finance and monitor the projects that can best help to serve local needs. They provide information on funding opportunities to potential beneficiaries, including: public bodies the private sector (businesses) universities associations & NGOs The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) is the institution which acts as the voice of regions and cities in the European Union (EU). It represents local and regional authorities across the European Union and advises on new laws that have an impact on regions and cities (70% of all EU legislation). The CoR is a political assembly composed of 350 members and 350 alternates from all EU countries (grouped by political party and headed by the President) who have been elected at local or regional level (for example as Mayors or Presidents of a region). They come to Brussels up to six times a year to debate their opinions on proposed legislation and agree on resolutions for further action by the EU. |

New EU rules ensure better protection for 120 million holidaymakers this summer As of Sunday 1 July, travellers booking package holidays will enjoy stronger consumer rights. Not only will traditional package holidays be covered, the new rules will also protect consumers who book other forms of combined travel, including self-customised packages, where the traveller chooses different elements from a single point of sale online or offline. The new rules will also introduce protection for 'linked travel arrangements' when the traveller purchases travel services at one point of sale, but through separate booking processes, or, after having booked one travel service on one website, is invited to book another service on a different website. |
