Dear reader,

It might seem dreadfully insiderish, but the civil war raging within the walls of Number 10 over the resignation of Lee Cain could have serious consequences for how Boris Johnson approaches the next four years. Camilla Tominey has the story of how the extraordinary row erupted from nowhere and the key role played by Carrie Symonds, the Prime Minister’s fiance.

The financial burden placed on the state by the pandemic is enormous and could change the UK for good, says Allister Heath. In his latest column, he argues that, while the imminent arrival of a vaccine is excellent news, the demand for higher taxes and the cultural change that massive government spending has brought, risk destroying the Brexit dream and pushing Britain into socialist stagnation.

Fresh controversy has erupted over Princess Diana’s 1995 Panorama interview with Martin Bashir and the BBC has now launched an inquiry into allegations that he used dirty tricks to secure the interview. Whatever the truth, the story should not, writes Camilla Tominey, lead people to believe that Princess Diana was simply a vulnerable woman with no control over her own circumstances.

Finally, this was an American presidential election like no other. So much so that even the conspiracy theories took on a new level. The bizarre QAnon theory – about Satan-worshipping paedophiles running the US government – has gained worrying credence across the Atlantic. Sam Leith delves into its eclectic and troubling origins.
