Plus: The Egyptian mummy head in the high school
| | Taking a page from history: What we learnt in 2023 |
|
It's been said those that don't know history are destined to repeat it. This year ABC RN looked back at some forgotten histories in season three of Marc Fennell's Stuff the British Stole, and considered the more recent past with Hamish Macdonald in Take Me to Your Leader, a series that looks at how powerful world leaders came to be who they are today. There were some great historical long reads this year too. For instance, find out how an Egyptian mummified head ended up inside a Grafton high school library. Or why everything you think you know about Pocahontas is probably incorrect. Catch up on how Xi Jinping's 1985 homestay in Iowa and his enduring friendship with one of the US trip's coordinators influenced the Chinese leader's world view. And don't miss this fascinating look back at how European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen's childhood as the daughter of a high-profile German politician, the family's subsequent death threats and her time living in London under an assumed identity made her who she is today. And finally, we think local history also deserves a second look, so we did just that in this intriguing history of one of Sydney's forgotten landmarks, the Metro-Minerva Theatre. Enjoy these and other great ABC RN long reads and listens below while you take a well-deserved break. Happy holidays Alexandra Spring, Acting RN Editor Enjoy getting ABC RN in your inbox?
