Good morning. On the occasion of his first US retrospective, on view at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien sits down with Folasade Ologundudu to discuss the show, his influences, and more. Among the gems in this interview is Julien's observation on our perception of the marginal — what we view as existing peripherally or on the sidelines. “I like these sorts of entanglements and rearranging and appropriating what would be seen to be in the margins,” he explains, “and to say, ‘No, that is not in the margin, it’s the central story.’” Another important piece today tackles museum workers’ push to implement all-gender restrooms as the Trump administration and other far-right governments go after trans rights. The staffers who spoke to Hyperallergic, many of them queer and nonbinary individuals, shared how they used their expertise, personal experiences, and creativity to make inclusive restroom facilities a reality at their institution. Also in the news, Staff Writer Maya Pontone visits Keff Joons — you read that right — a massive and climbable inflatable sculpture in Brooklyn. Meanwhile, Staff Writer Isa Farfan dives into the latest bipartisan push for a Smithsonian Museum of the American Latino, a project whose stated aim to recognize Latine individuals’ contributions feels disturbingly discordant against the backdrop of Trump’s mass deportation campaign. Ed Simon on the art of Clara Peeters, AX Mina on our collective tarot obsession, and more below. — Valentina Di Liscia, News Editor | |
