Millions of Americans could soon lose home internet access

More than 23 million U.S. households could lose access to their internet plans or facing skyrocketing bills as early as May, according to the Federal Communications Commission

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) provides help with internet access, but the program is likely to run out of funding in April. The situation could impact nearly one in five households nationwide or nearly 60 million Americans.

CNN describes the situation as a “little-known but fast-approaching financial cliff, a catastrophe that policy experts say is preventable but only if Congress acts, and quickly,” adding that internet loss would “widen the digital divide between have and have-nots and potentially leading to economic instability on a massive scale” ...

iOS 18 could see 'biggest update since first iPhone'

Artificial intelligence and a more customizable home screen are among new features expected to land

When iOS 18 launches for the iPhone later this year, it's expected to represent the biggest update to Apple's mobile operating system since the original iPhone, Apple tipster and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman claimed on Sunday.

Gurman said that while the main focus will be on artificial intelligence, there won't be so many ChatGPT-like generative AI features; instead, there will be "a slew of AI tools that help manage your daily life." He also mentioned a new home screen that's more customizable. Elaborating on social media, Gurman said it will allow users to place app icons anywhere on the screen, allowing for spaces if desired, similar to what Android users have been able to do for a long time ...

Is the Apple Vision Pro the ultimate personal home theater?

To be clear, this is not a Vision Pro review ... because you don’t need another Vision Pro review

For months before its release, people have asked if I thought the Apple Vision Pro might be the next frontier for watching movies and TV shows and playing video games.

My answer has always been a resounding no. My potent powers of tech punditry and prediction allowed me to determine — without having tried the Vision Pro — that it would never be able to replace a quality home entertainment system.

Was I right? Or am I about to eat a big fat slice of humble pie? Let’s find out ...

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empirescored biggest weekend box office take

Dune: Part Two took second spot at the U.S. box office, but that's been out three weeks whereas Sony's Frozen Empire has just opened

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has emerged as the big hit among recent releases, performing slightly better than expected.

Variety reported that the latest installment in the supernatural comedy series took $45.2 million in its debut in 4,345 North American theaters. Internationally, Frozen Empire collected $16.4 million from 25 markets for a global start of $61 million.

The domestic take is slightly larger than that of its 2021 predecessor, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which picked up $44 million at the start, though theaters were dealing with the pandemic aftermath at that time. “It’s a sign that the 30-year-old franchise hasn’t expanded its constituency beyond the original (and aging) core fans of the business of busting ghosts,” Variety noted.

Why Riot Games curtailed its dream of becoming 'the next Disney'

The gaming industry has been rocked by redundancies recently, and tougher times are causing companies to reevaluate their goals

Digiday has taken a close look at how Riot Games is returning to its roots to focus on its core gaming products after spending years endeavoring to become a “Disney-esque culture and entertainment giant.”

The move toward rapid expansion was due to various factors, including a boost in global gaming brought on by the pandemic and the release of the popular first-person shooter title Valorant, following League of Legends.

But gaming activity returned to normal by the end of 2022, and revenue fell, prompting Riot to refocus on game publishing to achieve its long-term goals as a company ...
