Bringing you a new source of support and expertise
Dear John, Leading a nonprofit is often a lonely job — and even more so in these turbulent times. That’s why we’re bringing you a new source of support and expertise. As CEO of the Chronicle of Philanthropy, I’m always asking other leaders for advice — and now I have distilled some of my most insightful conversations into Nonprofits Now: Leading Today, a podcast series that debuted on April 15 with the next episode airing on April 29. Whether you’re already a top leader — or aspiring to become one — you’ll learn about new ideas and approaches you can put to use right away. And each episode will give you plenty of inspiration to help you manage through even the toughest days. To figure out what topics were most important for us to cover, my colleagues and I pored over our exclusive survey of leaders. The findings spotlight many challenges that keep nonprofit executives up at night. The struggle to find and keep great talent. The challenges of managing employees who span multiple generations. The unrelenting pressures that can lead to burnout.
Among the outstanding leaders you’ll hear from: | Tim Dixon, co-founder of More in Common, explains how he works with leaders around the world to forge coalitions of unlikely partners who are advancing real change in their communities. LISTEN | Kathleen St. Louis Caliento, CEO of the Cara Collective, and Nick Grono, head of the Freedom Fund, whose organizations both received MacKenzie Scott grants, show you how they put their boards to work on fiscal planning and fundraising. | Vanessa Priya Daniel, founder of the Groundswell Fund, interviewed 45 women leaders of color for her newly released book. She tells us about superpowers these leaders possess — and offers a slew of smart strategies from her own experiences as both a grant maker and social-justice organizer. | Nonprofits Now: Leading Today is available wherever you listen to podcasts. I hope you’ll tune in and join me. And sign up for Philanthropy Today, our weekday newsletter, to receive an update when a new episode drops.
At the opening of each episode, I’ll share with you a few pieces of wisdom that stayed with me after interviewing these remarkable leaders.
They reminded me to stay curious, to never shy away from bold action, and to be generous to everyone around me. And most important, they underscored the essential role nonprofit leaders play in strengthening communities amid chaos.
Let me know what you learned from the podcast — and drop me a line to tell me what else the Chronicle can do to help you thrive as a leader. | |
