| | | | Is it a report? Is it a podcast? Yes. Two of our favorite storytelling projects at Mozilla, our award-winning podcast, IRL, and our annual Internet Health Report, have teamed up for a season on AI in real life. Through the online stories and data visuals of the Internet Health Report, we examine who has power over AI. In five episodes of IRL we introduce you directly to champions around the world who are shifting that power to change how technology shapes our lives. In the first episode, we hear about the military and AI surveillance tech that some engineers, like Laura Nolan, refused to build at Google. We hear about AI researcher Yves Moreau’s quest to see unethical papers retracted from journals, and we hear Yeshimabeit Milner on the #NoMoreDataWeapons campaign of Data for Black Lives. Each bi-weekly episode will zoom in on one issue. We explore the human cost of medical diagnosis-by-algorithm. We learn what happens when neighborhoods are excluded from geospatial mapping. How communities are fighting back to stop the spread of disinformation. And how workers fight for their rights when their boss is an algorithm. AI is neither ‘artificial’ nor ‘intelligent’ as the people you’ll hear from will tell you. It’s what we do with data, machine learning, and automation that truly matters. You can read more about why Mozilla is tackling this topic, at this moment, in this way here. So join IRL’s new host, Bridget Todd, as she asks engineers, data scientists, and policy folks from around the world how they're developing more trustworthy AI. Because AI is real life. J.
